David L. Robbins\The War of the Rats...
Quote:
The Battle of Stalingrad (23 August 1942 – 2 February 1943) was a major battle of World War II in which Nazi Germany and its allies fought the Soviet Union for control of the city of Stalingrad in Southern Russia, on the eastern boundary of Europe..Marked by constant close quarters combat and direct assaults on civilians by air raids, it is often regarded as the single largest and bloodiest battle in the history of warfare..The heavy losses inflicted on the German Wehrmacht make it arguably the most strategically decisive battle of the whole war.. It was a turning point in the theatre of World War II–the German forces never regained the initiative in the East and withdrew a vast military force from the West to replace their losses..As a sniper, I've killed more than a few Nazis.. I have a passion for observing enemy behavior.. You watch a Nazi officer come out of a bunker, acting all high and mighty, ordering his soldiers every which way, and putting on an air of authority..In 1608, the city had its first stone church, St. John the Baptist..The officer hasn't got the slightest idea that he only has seconds to live..This was a battle to the daat - fighting street by street, brick by brick, living like rats in a desperate struggle to survive...

Zaytsev in December 1942..

On 23 July 1942, Hitler personally rewrote the operational objectives for the 1942 campaign, greatly expanding them to include the occupation of the city of Stalingrad.. Both sides began to attach propaganda value to the city based on it bearing the name of the leader of the Soviet Union.. It was assumed that the fall of the city would also firmly secure the northern and western flanks of the German armies as they advanced on Baku with the aim of securing these strategic petroleum resources for Germany..The expansion of objectives was a significant factor in Germany's failure at Stalingrad, caused by German overconfidence and an underestimation of Soviet reserves..The Soviets realized that they were under tremendous constraints of time and resources and ordered that anyone strong enough to hold a rifle be sent to fight..

The story focuses in on the lives of two expert snipers, a Russian and a German, each with the goal of killing the other.. The two snipers, Army Chief Master Sergeant Vasily Zaytsev of the Red Army and SS Colonel Heinz Thorvald of the German army, are equally matched.. However, the story is complicated when a woman sniper Tania Chernova becomes one of Vasily's most talented assistants, and Zaitzev's battlefield lover..Tania Borealis and Tania Australis, stars in the constellation Ursa Major..Colonel Heinz Thorvald was joined by Corporal Nikki Mond in his search to find and kill Vasily Zaystev. Nikki acted as a spotter and general accomplice to Thorvald..Tania Chernova is an American with family ties to Russia..Chief Master Sergeant Vasily Zaystev, nicknamed “the Rabbit” or “the Hare,” was born on 23 March 1915 in the Chelyabinsk Region of the Ural Mountains..The fortress Sary Su (yellow water/river), was established to defend the unstable southern border of the country.. It was located slightly above the mouth of the Tsaritsa River on the right bank.. It soon became the nucleus of a trading settlement.. Compared to the Sun it has 240% of the mass and 230% of the Sun's radius, but is radiating 37 times as much luminosity...

Soviet Soldiers attack a house...

On 23 August the 6th Army reached the outskirts of Stalingrad in pursuit of the 62nd and 64th Armies, which had fallen back into the city..Stalin rushed all available troops to the east bank of the Volga, some from as far away as Siberia..A massive German strategic bombing on 23 August caused a firestorm, killing thousands and turning Stalingrad into a vast landscape of rubble and burnt ruins..The Soviet Air Force, the Voyenno-Vozdushnye Sily (VVS), was swept aside by the Luftwaffe..The burden of the initial defense of the city fell on the 1077th Anti-Aircraft Regiment, a unit made up mainly of young female volunteers who had no training for engaging ground targets..Amid the debris of the wrecked city, the Soviet 62nd and 64th Armies, which included the Soviet 13th Guards Rifle Division, anchored their defense lines with strongpoints in houses and factories.. Stalin's Order No. 227 of 27 July 1942 decreed that all commanders who ordered unauthorized retreat would be subject to a military tribunal..Volgograd is twinned with Coventry, UK (43)-Turin, Italy (61)-Chennai, India (66)-Ruse, Bulgaria (2001)-The term Borealis meaning "the north side"..Australis meaning "the south side" in Latin-Place de Stalingrad Paris M├ętro station of Stalingrad..
