Arrow College of the Holy Cross

Lawrence of Arabia- No Prisoners...
The College of the Holy Cross or Holy Cross is a private, undergraduate Roman Catholic, Jesuit liberal arts college located in Worcester, Massachusetts, USA. Founded in 1843, Holy Cross is the oldest Jesuit college in New England and one of the oldest in the United States..Holy Cross was founded by Benedict Joseph Fenwick, SJ, second Bishop of Boston, after his efforts to found a Catholic college in Boston were thwarted by the city's Protestant civic leaders...Relations with Boston's civic leaders worsened such that, when a Jesuit faculty was finally secured in 1843, Fenwick decided to leave the Boston school and instead opened the College of the Holy Cross 45 miles (72 km) west of the city in central Massachusetts, where he felt the Jesuits could operate with greater autonomy..During World War II, College of the Holy Cross was one of 131 colleges and universities nationally that took part in the V-12 Navy College Training Program which offered students a path to a Navy commission..Holy Cross sponsors 27 varsity sports; all but two of which compete at the NCAA Division I level..Holy Cross sports teams are called the Crusaders, and their colors are purple and white..Holy Cross operates 11 on-campus residence halls divided into three geographic clusters..In 2015, USA TODAY ranked The College of the Holy Cross #23 nationwide, 4th in Massachusetts, and 2nd of the 10 best Catholic College's in the United States..There are two theories of how Holy Cross chose purple as its official colour.. One suggests it was derived from the royal purple used by Constantine the Great (born about 275 A.D., died in 337 AD) as displayed on his labarum (military standard) and on those of later Christian emperors of Rome..The Latin motto In Hoc Signo Vinces, "In This Sign You Shall Conquer", has been attributed to Emperor Constantine the Great, a Roman emperor noted for his tolerance of Christians..

A general in line for the highest US military post says Russia poses the greatest threat to national security..Relations between the US and Russia have deteriorated since Russia annexed Ukraine's Crimea region last year..A pro-Russian insurgency in eastern Ukraine has also prompted US sanctions..."So if you want to talk about a nation that could pose an existential threat to the United States, I'd have to point to Russia." Gen Dunford told senators on Thursday..Thus far the US has only provided non-lethal equipment and training for Ukrainian forces..Russia denies arming the rebels or sending troops there...

Crimea—or the Tauric Peninsula, as it was formerly known—has historically been at the boundary between the classical world and the Pontic–Caspian steppe.. Its southern fringe was colonised by the ancient Greeks, the ancient Persians, the ancient Romans, the Byzantine Empire, the Genoese and the Ottoman Empire, while at the same time its interior was occupied by a changing cast of invading steppe nomads, such as the Cimmerians, Scythians, Sarmatians, Goths, Alans, Bulgars, Huns, Khazars, Kipchaks, and the Golden Horde..After the Russian Revolution of 1917, Crimea became a republic within the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic in the USSR.. In World War Two it was downgraded to the Crimean Oblast, and in In 1954, by an internal political action by Communist Party General Secretary Nikita Khrushchev, it became a territory of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic within the Soviet Union..

The Crimean Khanate, was a Turkic vassal state of the Ottoman Empire during 1478 to 1774, the longest-lived of the Turkic khanates that succeeded the empire of the Golden Horde.. Its khans were the patrilineal descendants of Toqa Temür,13th son of Jochi and grandson of Genghis Khan..The Jewish population was concentrated in Çufut Kale ('Jewish Fortress'), a separate town near Bahçeseray that was the Khan's original capital..The Jews in Crimea were actively involved in the slave trade..Crimean law was based on Tatar law, Islamic law, and, in limited matters, Ottoman law.. The leader of the Muslim establishment was the mufti, who was selected from among the local Muslim clergy..The leader of the Muslim establishment was the mufti, who was selected from among the local Muslim clergy.. His major duty was neither judicial nor theological, but financial..The slave trade (15th-17th century) in captured Ukrainians and Russians was one of the major sources of income of Crimean Tatar and Nogay nobility..The united Russian and Ukrainian forces attacked the Khanate during the Chigirin Campaigns and the Crimean Campaigns.. It was during the Russo-Turkish War, 1735-1739 that the Russians, under the command of Field-Marshal Münnich, finally managed to penetrate the Crimean Peninsula itself, burning and destroying everything on their way..More warfare ensued during the reign of Catherine II.. The Russo-Turkish War, 1768-1774 resulted in the Treaty of Kuchuk-Kainarji, which made the Crimean Khanate independent from the Ottoman Empire and aligned it with the Russian Empire...

In Britain, the Crimean War is principally remembered for 3 reasons: the Charge of the Light Brigade, maladministration in the British army, and Florence Nightingale. However, this war, fought by an alliance of Britain, France, Turkey and Sardinia against Russia, is far more complex..Many wars have been fought on the grounds of the strategic importance of a region; many wars have been fought over religious differences. The Crimean War was the result of both factors..During the years leading up to the Crimean War, France, Russia and Britain were all competing for influence in the Middle East, particularly with Turkey. Religious differences were certainly a catalyst in the Crimean War. Control of access to religious sites in the Holy Land had been a cause of tension between Catholic France and Orthodox Russia for a number of years and in 1853, the conflict came to a head with rioting in Bethlehem..

Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might..Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.. I am the LORD...'ve always been amazed that the very people forced to live in the worst parts of town, go to the worst schools, and who have it the hardest are always the first to step up, to defend us. They serve so that we don't have to. They offer to give up their lives so that we can be free.. It is remarkably their gift to us.. And all they ask for in return is that we never send them into harm's way unless it is absolutely necessary..I couldn't believe that virtually no member of Congress had read the Spectre Act..So I decided that the only patriotic thing to do, was for me to read it to them...
