The Clayton Tunnel rail crash, which took place on Sunday 25 August 1861, five miles from Brighton on the south coast of England, was the worst accident of the British railway system to that time. Two trains collided inside the tunnel, killing 23 and injuring 176 passengers..The south portal of the tunnel is relatively unremarkable...

Charles Dickens probably based his story The Signal-Man" on this accident, dramatising the events (especially the bells and the telegraph needle), as well as adding other incidents. His own experience at the Staplehurst rail crash may have inspired him to write this ghost story.. Readers of the story in December 1866 would likely have still remembered the Clayton accident...

Charles Dickens, Jr. died of heart disease, at his home in Fulham, London, on 20 July 1896, aged 59. He was buried at Mortlake cemetery on 23 July 1896..
