The Boston Marathon bombings and subsequent related shootings were a series of attacks and incidents which began on April 15, 2013, when 2 pressure cooker bombs exploded during the Boston Marathon at 2:49 pm EDT, killing 3 people and injuring an estimated 264 others.. The bombs exploded about 12 seconds and 210 yards (190 m) apart, near the finish line on Boylston Street is the name of a major east-west thoroughfare in the city of Boston, Massachusetts. The Boston street was known as Frog Lane in the early 18th century and was later known as Common Street ..As it travels through the Back Bay, it forms the northern boundary of busy Copley Square and provides the southern limits to the Boston Public Garden before becoming a 2-way street running along Boston Common's southern edge from Charles Street to Tremont Street..The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) took over the investigation, and on April 18, released photographs and a surveillance video of 2 suspects..The suspects were identified later that day as Chechen brothers Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev..He said that he and his brother had decided after the Boston bombings to travel to New York City to bomb Times Square..Dzhokhar enrolled in the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, with a major in marine biology, in September 2011..
