Harold Frederick Shipman (14 January 1946 – 13 January 2004) was a British doctor and one of the most prolific serial killers in recorded history..On 31 January 2000, a jury found Shipman guilty of 15 murders.. He was sentenced to life imprisonment and the judge recommended that he never be released..About 80% of his victims were women.. His youngest victim was a 41(=5)-year-old man..The Rochdale is a broad canal because its locks are wide enough to allow vessels of 14 feet width. The canal runs for 32 miles (51 km) across the Pennines..Construction of the whole canal would take around 13 years...

The police then investigated other deaths Shipman had certified, and created a list of 15 specimen cases to investigate.. They discovered a pattern of his administering lethal doses of diamorphine, signing patients' death certificates, and then falsifying medical records to indicate that they had been in poor health..Prescription For Murder, a book by journalists Brian Whittle and Jean Ritchie, reports two theories on why Shipman forged the will: one is that he wanted to be caught because his life was out of control; the other theory put forward is that he planned to retire at age 55 and then leave the United Kingdom..Shipman's trial, presided over by Mr Justice Forbes, began on 5 October 1999...Shipman was charged with the murders of Marie West, Irene Turner, Lizzie Adams, Jean Lilley, Ivy Lomas, Muriel Grimshaw, Marie Quinn, Kathleen Wagstaff, Bianka Pomfret, Norah Nuttall, Pamela Hillier, Maureen Ward, Winifred Mellor, Joan Melia and Kathleen Grundy, all of whom had died between 95 and 98..The trial judge sentenced him to 15 concurrent life sentences and recommended that he never be released..According to historian Pamela Cullen, Adams had also been a serial killer—potentially killing up to 165 of his patients between 46 and 56—but as he was found not guilty, flaws in the system had not been subject to scrutiny...

Seeking shelter from a pounding rainstorm in a remote region of Wales, several travellers are admitted to a gloomy, foreboding mansion belonging to the extremely strange Femm family..Things get worse as the brutish mute butler, Morgan, gets drunk, runs amok, threatens Margaret and releases the long pent-up brother, Saul...

In 2005, it came to light that Shipman might have stolen jewellery from his victims.. Over £10,000 worth of jewellery had been found stashed in his garage in 1998, and in March 2005, with Primrose Shipman pressing for it to be returned to them, police wrote to the families of Shipman's victims asking them to identify the jewellery..Unidentified items were handed to the Assets Recovery Agency in May (5th Month)..Harold and Fred (They Make Ladies Dead) was a 2001 strip cartoon in Viz, also featuring serial killer Fred West.. Some relatives of Shipman's victims voiced anger at the cartoon..Harold Shipman committed suicide by hanging in his cell at Wakefield Prison at 06:20 on 13 January 2004, on the eve of his 58th birthday, and was pronounced dead at 08:10.. A Prison Service statement indicated that Shipman had hanged himself from the window bars of his cell using bed sheets...

Dark Satanic Mons Mill, Todmorden..

Todmorden featured in a TV show about haunted buildings.. The programme included a closed surgery in which Harold Shipman worked for a number of years, as well as the town hall (haunted by a grey lady), and Odd Fellows Hall (known as Baxters bar), which is haunted by a builder who died in the construction of the building in 1811..18 Shop Lock A6033 Todmorden-The Rochdale Branch Canal was a branch of the Rochdale Canal in north-west England which led close to Rochdale Town Centre-64 Kay Lane Lock Drummer Hill Branch..As built, the canal had 92 locks...

Shipman studied medicine at Leeds School of Medicine and graduated in 1970..Leeds School of Medicine is the medical school of the University of Leeds, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England.. He started work at Pontefract General Infirmary in Pontefract, West Riding of Yorkshire, and in 74 took his first position as a general practitioner (GP) at the Abraham Ormerod Medical Centre in Todmorden, West Yorkshire..Sutcliffe was born in BingLey, West Riding of Yorkshire to a working class Catholic family..He met Sonia Szurma (who was of Czech and Ukrainian parentage) on 14 February 1967; they married on 10 August 1974. His wife suffered several miscarriages and the couple were informed that she would not be able to have children..He was unemployed until October 1976, when he found a job as an HGV driver for T.& W.H. Clark (Holdings) Ltd. on the Canal Road Industrial Estate in Bradford..J.B. Priestley grew up in Heaton and John Braine attended St. Bede's Grammar School...As he describes in his autobiography, Margin Released, he suffered from the effects of poison gas, and then supervised German prisoners-of-war, before being demobilized..After his military service Priestley received a university education at Trinity Hall, Cambridge...

Todmorden received a visit from Prince Charles who came to support Mary Clear's Incredible Edible Todmorden project.. This featured on BBC Yorkshire..Police officer Alan Godfrey allegedly experienced an alien abduction and was the subject of Jenny Randles' book The Pennine UFO Mystery...Godfrey case cemented the Pennines as the central hot spot of UFO activity in Britain, and possibly in all of Europe..Zigmund (or Zygmunt) Jan Adamski (born 17 August 1923, Poland — died 1980) was a coal miner at Lofthouse Colliery, who mysteriously disappeared from his Tingley home in June 1980.. His body was found on top of a large stack of anthracite in Todmorden..

Anthracite (Greek ἀνθρακίτης (anthrakítes), "coal-like," from ἄνθραξ (ánthrax), coal) is a hard, compact variety of mineral coal that has a high luster..The imperfect anthracite of north Devon and north Cornwall (around Bude) in England, which is used as a pigment, is known as culm..Anthracite ignites with difficulty and burns with a short, blue, and smokeless flame..The moisture content of fresh-mined anthracite generally is less than 15 percent...Anthracite has a history of use in blast furnaces for iron smelting; however, it lacked the pore space of metallurgical coke, which eventually replaced anthracite.. After a long trip on a coal-powered train, travellers frequently would disembark covered with black soot, unless the locomotives were powered by anthracite, a clean-burning form of coal..Adamski set out to get some potatoes at 15:30 on June 6, 1980.. The next day he was due to attend a family wedding.. His body was found 5 days later in Todmorden next to a railway line on the afternoon of Wednesday June 11 at 15:45 by Trevor Parker, the son of the owner of the Tomlin's coal yard..On examination, it was found he had died of a heart attack and had peculiar burns on his neck and shoulders, and had had a peculiar ointment applied that forensic scientists could not identify..Although still wearing a suit, his shirt, watch and wallet were missing...
