Memories of a Revolutionary...

An Active Service Unit (ASU) was a Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) cell of 5 to 8 members, tasked with carrying out armed attacks.. In 2002 the IRA had about 1,000 active members of which about 300 were in active service units..The bulk of attacks from 77 onwards were the responsibility of a second type of unit, the ASU. To improve security and operational capacity these ASUs were smaller, tight-knit cells, usually consisting of 5 to 8 members, for carrying out armed attacks. The ASU's weapons were controlled by a quartermaster under the direct control of the IRA leadership..By the late 80s and early 90s, it was estimated that the IRA had roughly 300 members in ASUs and approximately 450 serving in supporting roles..The exception to this reorganisation was the South Armagh Brigade which retained its traditional hierarchy and battalion structure and used relatively large numbers of volunteers in its actions.. Some operations, like the attack on Cloghogue checkpoint or the South Armagh sniper squads, involved as many as 20 volunteers, most of them in supporting roles..The majority of soldiers shot dead in 72, the bloodiest year of the conflict in Northern Ireland, fell, in effect, victims of IRA snipers...

During the late hours of 30 April, a group of 4 Provisional IRA members held a family hostage in Killeen and stole a mechanical excavator. This was to be used to build a makeshift ramp up to the Dublin–Belfast railway line, which drew parallel to the Dublin–Belfast motorway (M1).. At the same time, other IRA members stole a Renault Master van in Dundalk, which was then loaded with 2,200 lb (1,000 kg) of home-made explosives.. The van was fitted with wheels that could run on the rails.. The excavator moved up the ramp and lifted the van onto the railway.. The van was then driven some 800 metres north and a mile-long wire attached to a triggering device was added to the bomb.. Meanwhile, IRA members in support set up roadblocks on both sides of the border to keep people away.. The IRA unit who set up the checkpoint in the Republic wore Garda Síochána uniforms..

A British Army patrol from the 2nd Battalion Royal Regiment of Fusiliers heard what sounded like a train and spotted the van on the rails heading towards the checkpoint, which was alerted immediately..At 2:05, the explosive went off, demolishing the checkpoint.. The 10-ton sangar was lifted off of its foundation and thrown 12 yards away.. Fusilier Grundy was killed almost instantly, while 23 troops were injured.. The rest of the soldiers, all inside a reinforced concrete bunker, survived the massive blast..Shipping services to Liverpool were provided from 1837 by the Dundalk Steam Packet Company..Dundalk also has a basketball team The Dundalk Ravens..Descendents of the Earls of Roden are also known to be living in the area of Beechlawn, Coolock on the northside of Dublin..The family seat was Hyde Hall, near Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire and Tollymore Park, near Bryansford, County Down..Dundalk is twinned with Rezé (Breton: Reudied, Gallo: Rezae) is a commune in the Loire-Atlantique department in western France..Rezé dates back to the Roman era, when it was known as Portus Ratiatus (port of Rezé) and Ratiatum Pictonum Portus (picton port of Rezé)..Dundalk is considered one of the first inner-ring suburbs of Baltimore... no longer has anything to do with BaltiMore!. Now it's about fear!. Our fear of your missiles, your fear of our subs, fear of being weak, fear of making a mistake..the same fear of the other guy that had us build these goddamn bombs in the first place!.Can someone ask Mr. Ryan if I can use the telephone now?..
