The Most Honourable Order of the Bath (formerly the Most Honourable Military Order of the Bath)is a British order of chivalry founded by George I on 18 May 1725..The name derives from the elaborate mediaeval ceremony for creating a knight, which involved bathing (as a symbol of purification) as one of its elements..The Order of the Bath is the 4th-most senior of the British Orders of Chivalry, after The Most Noble Order of the Garter, The Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle, and The Most Illustrious Order of St Patrick (dormant).. The last of the aforementioned Orders, which relates to Ireland, still exists but has been in disuse since the formation, in December 1922, of the Irish Free State..The blow, or colée, when first utilized was given with a naked fist.. It was a forceful box on the ear or neck that one would remember.. This was later substituted for by a gentle stroke with the flat part of the sword against the side of the neck.. This then developed into the custom of tapping on either the right or left shoulder or both, which is still the tradition in Great Britain today..In the Netherlands, the knights in the exclusive Military Order of William (the Dutch "Victoria Cross") are struck on both shoulders with the palm of the hand, first by the Dutch monarch (if present)then by the other knights..The new knight does not Kneel...Some IEGs such as zif268 and Arc have been implicated in learning and memory and long-term potentiation
