The major earthquake thread-Updated As it happens

a new thread for forum members to post news of major earthquakes (meaning above 6.0 Richter magnitude).

The strength can be verified at USGS website: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/...uakes_all.html
(all major quakes highlighted RED on this site)

and also worth a look, "at a glance" world's earthquakes map:
http://eceti.org/Eceti.EarthChangesTopicII.html

Anyway.. as I mentioned in my last earthquake thread, there appears to be a pattern of fairly regular clusters of quakes which occur at exactly 10km depth.. well.. here's a major quake this morning, at 10km depth too...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/8243148.stm

"Earthquake hits northern Georgia

An earthquake of magnitude 6.2 has struck northern Georgia.

The US Geological Survey said the quake was 10km (6.2 miles) deep, and its epicentre was 80km from the city of Kutaisi, in the Oni area.

There have been no immediate reports of damage or casualties from the earthquake, which struck at 0341 local time (2241 GMT).

However, people felt tremors in the capital Tbilisi, the central town of Gori and in Zugdidi, in the west.

Peter, a Tbilisi resident, told the BBC: "I noticed that my knees felt weak and the towels, shower doors, and shelves were all swaying but what was scary was the sound the building made.

"It sounded like someone was scratching slowly on the walls."

There were two other quakes at exactly 10km depth around the time, another in Georgia, and one in Italy, check USGS for info.

Also yesterday, another major quake off Java..

Unfortunately, they hide most of the important quakes. Fact.

a very interesting article (with graphs.. which I can't post for some reason!) about Global Earthquake trends...

http://earth.webecs.co.uk/index.htm

here's an extract:

"It is interesting to note the following statistical records for earthquakes since 1863 across the planet. I have chosen a relatively long period each time, to allow true trends to be seen, and smooth out the effects of short term counts. (see below).

When it comes to detection rates for major earthquakes over 100 years ago, it is worth noting that our ability to record all earthquakes of 7.0 or above occurring across the planet prior to 1901 is uncertain, and so there is likely to be some incomplete data in the 19th century, because of this. It was only in 1897 that a global network of seismographs was deployed. The numbers shown for the period from 1863 to 1900 may therefore be lower than actual, although it is unlikely to be more than three or four times that shown. (records for major 'quakes were fairly good from the 1880s onwards). It is acknowledged that care and good judgement must be exercised in using global seismic data, as there may still be incomplete data from our sources even after 1901. This report has been based on data available from USGS (NEIC) and other online sources, such as Wikipedia, in an attempt to cover as much of the available data as possible .

DATES FROM & TO PERIOD NO. EARTHQUAKES (Mag. > 6.99)
--------------------------- ----------- ------------------------------
1863 to 1900 incl 38 yrs 12
1901 to 1938 incl 38 yrs 53
1939 to 1976 incl 38 yrs 71
1977 to 2014 incl * 38 yrs 136 predict >180

* Although periods are shown up to 2014, this report was initially written in 2006. Therefore the final period (from 1977) will be updated as required until the end of 2014. In the meantime a predicted total is shown.
The earthquake (east of Kuril Islands) on 15th January 2009 is the last included in these numbers.

Apart from the "long-term" trends shown above, which show an ongoing persistent increase, it is perhaps more stark to record that earthquakes across the planet show a marked increase in activity since 1997. There are more major earthquakes occurring now, and this on an ever more frequent basis............................."

Powerful quake rattles Venezuela

A strong earthquake has struck off the coast of Venezuela, knocking out power in the capital and sending people rushing into the streets.

The 6.4-magnitude quake's epicentre was 65 miles (110km) west of Caracas, at a depth of 6.2 miles (10km).

The country's interior minister said there were no reports of physical damage or loss of life.

The closest town to the epicentre was Puerto Cabello, on the country's northern coast.

Tremors were also felt in nearby Carabobo and Aragua states.

"We have not received any [information] of material damage, much less any reports of the loss of human life," Interior Minister Tarek El Aissami said, according to AFP news agency.

Reuters reported that power was out in one area of the capital and media reports suggested that other regions were also without electricity.

The country's minister for light industry said that efforts were being made to repair any damage to telephone networks or gas and electricity supplies that may have failed after the earthquake."

Venezuela finds vast gas reserve

The find will allay fears of a decline in Venezuela's energy industry
President Hugo Chavez has announced the discovery of a vast gas field off the coast of Venezuela.

The find - estimated at 7 to 8 trillion cubic feet, about five times what Spain uses in a year - was made with the Spanish energy company Repsol.

Mr Chavez announced the find while in Spain during a tour of Europe and Asia.

"What are we going to do with so much gas?" he jokingly asked Repsol's head Antonio Brufau in a joint interview with Spanish newspaper El Pais.

"I'm sure we'll find some use for it," came the reply.

Mr Chavez said the development of the field would put Venezuela - which already boasts the largest proven oil reserves outside the Middle East - among the world's top five gas producers.

Repsol confirmed the "enormous" discovery, which it made in an offshore site called Cardon 4 in the Gulf of Venezuela in an exploration consortium with the Italian energy company Eni.

It said further tests were under way to confirm provisional estimates of its volume.

If so, it will be the biggest gas find in Repsol's history.

Boost for Venezuela

Repsol said that once development of the field was under way, profits from the venture would be split three ways, with Repsol and Eni taking 32.5% each and Venezuela's state company PDVSA taking 35%.

For both Mr Chavez and Repsol the timing of the announcement could not have been better, reports the BBC's Will Grant in Caracas.

There have been suggestions that the oil industry in Venezuela is in decline, with falling prices, reduced production and high debts to contractors.

However, this gas find will go a long way to calm investor fears in Venezuela and Spain about the extent of the country's energy reserves, our correspondent says. "

Doesn't anyone else think it odd that in space of one week or thereabouts, Venezuela find massive Gas reserves, and then buys load of Russian Missiles.. and THEN get hit by 10km depth earthquake?? Me feels there's something going on here.

Question: There was no material damage much less lose of life? I can see their priorities, is this another case of HAARP. What are your views please?

I have been following the earthquakes and tidal waves which regurarly happen on 26th. December most years when the western world is engrossed with Boxing day (St Stephen's Day) so are rarely broadcasted and if so appear so far away from the USA.

Venezuela quake

Looks more like a storm/hurricane

meneliel 17-09-2009 12:45 PM

Yes, they had both, Earthquake and heavy storms! Caracas (the capital) was flooded after heavy rains (that lasted aprox 2 hours). It was a very weird storm (very much like a hurricane), it came so sudden after a week of drought, during this time the city experienced very high temperatures, (not usual for that region of the country).
While in the middle of the heavy and "strange" storm, then came the earthquake.
Most of the damage was due to the storm, however many structures were affected by the erthquake.
Makes me wonder...

I read that a Japanese seismologist detected historic level of ions in the air in Tokyo in August. He said that around 6 weeks before an earthquake, the level of ions would increase and then fell to normal.

He predicts a Richter Scale 8 earthquake by the end of September 2009.

Any comments?

Sounds like HAARP in action eh?

worlds beyond 17-09-2009 07:06 PM

Doesn't surprise me.... quite a few people who live in earhtquake zones can physically detect significant changes in air pressure/ground temperature prior to earthquakes... I personally know one such person who is 99% of time accurate.. she's just like Travolta in the earhtquake scene in "phenomenom" . No jest.

Good thread :)

Also, you can track Earthquakes, storms, floods, tsunami's, pandemics, nuclear accidents, volcano's etc on this Alert Map :)

tacchan14 17-09-2009 07:15 PM

The original news article was in Chinese, no use posting it here.

He detects by aparatus, now by himself :P. The article said he had been in the field for 30 years. In July/August 2009. the spike in level of ions was 10, 000 times more than normal. As a comparison, prior to the great Japanese earthquake in 1995, the spike was 300 times.

It was suggested that should a RS8 EQ happens, more than 10, 000 people would pass away. I wonder if it's an underestimation.

i agree, and i also sense some very directly related connections between the quake, the deals with russia and the gas discovery.

i undestand that earthquakes that happen on a 10Km depth are Man-induced.

but anyway, to prove all this...eeehhh. is sad when one doesnt know where the enmy hides.

Earthquake strikes off Bali coast

An earthquake off the Indonesian holiday island of Bali has sent people running from their homes in panic.

At least seven people have been injured - some were hurt jumping from buildings while others had been hit by falling debris, an official said.

The quake - measuring 5.8 according to the US Geological Survey - struck at dawn 75km (45 miles) south of Denpasar.

No tsunami warning was issued and there were few reports of serious material damage, local officials said.

"I was frightened because it was strong," Dutch tourist Ernst Raynaldo was quoted as saying by the Associated Press.

"I ran out immediately as I saw many others rushing into the swimming pool," the closest open space.

"When the quake happened I was in a market and some people started shouting and running out of the market building, leaving their belongings behind," Putu Suartana, a resident in Singaraja in Bali, was quoted as saying by Reuters news agency.

The roof of a shopping centre in Denpasar collapsed.

Two weeks ago, an earthquake on the main Indonesian island of Java left at least 50 dead.

In December 2004, an earthquake off the coast of Sumatra in Indonesia triggered a tsunami that killed more than 200,000 people around Asia.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the most active areas for earthquakes and volcanic activity in the world. "
