You *MAY* not want your personal info listed here

This appears to be applicable ONLY to those in America.

Have you guys heard about Spokeo? A LOT of your personal information is posted online for all to see on their website.

I've posted a detailed notice of what to do on our main website and am sending this message to my entire address book. This is a massive invasion of privacy and MOST of the listed information is dead wrong. Regardless, it can paint a big X on your forehead.

I spent this entire Saturday morning ravaging my email addresses and consider it time well spent. If you received a double notification, my apologies. This is too important a matter to inadvertently leave someone off notification.

Holly

Wow, the yearly income bit is getting too personal.

Where do you reckon they are getting that sort of info.?

Hope you managed to delete your info.

neutrino 23-03-2010 05:55 PM

Holy shit, it shows peoples addresses on Google Earth street view.

egozero 23-03-2010 06:11 PM

couldn't really find anybody, checked a handful of my family members nobody showed up in it. Is this a USA only thing? or does it include Canada. Looks like its USA only.

fidokrab 23-03-2010 06:30 PM

I did a little work on this and I found it a bit disturbing. I was able to find just about everything you need to know about any person. I was able to find most friends of mine, where they live, a picture of their house, and everything else about them.

And this is public, just imagine what government is able to find out about a person.

I have no idea how they got the info. It's creepy and the fact that they have the nerve to post it. I performed the delete instructions and it looks like my wife and I are off of there now. Other folks might wnat to check this one out to be safe.

freckles 23-03-2010 06:40 PM

  Well I am not in the US but it pulled up info on me

It had my email handle, (not my real name), and my IP location, which thankfully is not my real location :)

For some reason it pulled up my wish list from Amazon  No pictures though.. ..

I put in one of my friends and it pulled down lots of photos from her MSN account and myspace account

It must be something to do with your privacy settings but its pretty disturbing to say the least!!!!!

sodi 23-03-2010 06:40 PM

wtf

Can people remove their information from there ?

I had some MySpace crap on there, so I went to my profile on MySpace and deleted EVERYTHING. Check back on Spokeo, all gone. :)

REMOVAL FROM DATABASE

When your name comes up, click on the location that matches. (Prepare to fume!)

This brings up your profile for all to see. ** COPY the URL where your information appears. **

At the bottom of the page is the word PRIVACY. http://www.spokeo.com/privacy.

Once there, paste in the saved URL, your email and the code provided.

Hit Remove Listing.

By return email, they will send you a URL that you must click or paste into your browser to complete the removal process.

SEND THEM A BLAST

If you are irritated by this exposure you may want to pay them a visit via their contact page: http://www.spokeo.com/public/feedback. It's also found under CONTACT in small print at the bottom of the page.

I sent them the following:

Yours is a VERY unreliable, intrusive website. In checking what you had posted after someone alerted me to this, more than HALF of your data was incorrect.

I am contacting everyone I can think of as well as posting notices on our websites about being removed from your worrisome dis-information. You are WORSE than the Census.

Their website states to allow 1 business day for removal, which since this was Saturday, would likely be done on Tuesday. Instead, our personal information was removed within 5 minutes.

Oh my god I've just seen my street and my house on street view for the first time and the bastards came on bin day! My garden looks like a rubbish tip!

_placebo_ 23-03-2010 08:18 PM

Thanks for the info! I'm not from America, so my name didn't show up in the search but I searched my email and there I was!   Not happy!

choosewisely 23-03-2010 08:36 PM

JESUS! Like someone else said in this thread is that if that is the information they can put on a PUBLIC website GOD knows what the hell the government (CIA) have got on us.

When you just give it a second though, it really scares you of how late we all woke up, maybe it is too late. The bastards have been recording us in a database for whatever knows how many years now.
