Royal Air Force

The Royal Air Force (RAF) is the United Kingdom's aerial warfare force.. Formed toward the end of the First World War on 1 April 1918, it is the oldest independent air force in the world.. Following victory over the Central Powers in 1918 the RAF emerged – at the time – the largest air force in the world..Since its formation, the RAF has taken a significant role in British military history, in particular, playing a large part in the Second World War where it fought its most famous campaign, the Battle of Britain...

The RAF underwent rapid expansion prior to and during the Second World War.. Under the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan of December 1939, the air forces of British Commonwealth countries trained and formed "Article XV squadrons" for service with RAF formations.. Many individual personnel from these countries, and exiles from occupied Europe, also served with RAF squadrons.. By the end of the war the Royal Canadian Air Force had contributed more than 30 squadrons to serve in RAF formations, similarly, approximately a quarter of Bomber Command's personnel were Canadian.. Additionally, the Royal Australian Air Force represented around nine percent of all RAF personnel who served in the European and Mediterranean theaters..

In the Battle of Britain in 1940, the RAF (supplemented by 2 Fleet Air Arm Squadrons, Polish, Czecho-Slovak and other multinational pilots and ground personnel) defended the skies over Britain against the numerically superior German Luftwaffe.. In what is perhaps the most prolonged and complicated air campaign in history, the Battle of Britain contributed significantly to the delay and subsequent indefinite postponement of Hitler's plans for an invasion of the United Kingdom (Operation Sealion).. In the House of Commons on 20 August, prompted by the ongoing efforts of the RAF, Prime Minister Winston Churchill eloquently made a speech to the nation, where he said "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few"...

Trafford Leigh-Mallory
Leigh-Mallory at a squadron briefing in France in September 44...

Air Chief Marshal Sir Trafford Leigh-Mallory, KCB, DSO & Bar (11 July 1892 – 14 November 1944) was a senior commander in the Royal Air Force. Leigh-Mallory served as a Royal Flying Corps pilot and squadron commander during World War I.. Remaining in the newly formed RAF after the war, Leigh-Mallory served in a variety of staff and training appointments throughout the 1920s and 1930s..During the pre-Second World War build-up, he was Air Officer Commanding (AOC) No. 12 (Fighter) Group and shortly after the end of the Battle of Britain, took over command of No. 11 (Fighter) Group, defending the approach to London. In 1942 he became the Commander-in-Chief (C-in-C) of Fighter Command before being selected in 1943 to be the C-in-C of the Allied Expeditionary Air Force, which made him the air commander for the Allied Invasion of Normandy..In November 44, en route to Ceylon to take up the post of Air Commander-in-Chief South East Asia Command, his aircraft crashed in the French Alps and Leigh-Mallory, his wife and eight others were killed. He was one of the most senior British officers and the most senior RAF officer to be killed in the Second World War..Trafford Leigh-Mallory was born in Mobberley, Cheshire, the son of Herbert Leigh Mallory, (1856–1943), Rector of Mobberly, who legally changed his surname to Leigh-Mallory in 1914..

He was the brother of George Mallory, the noted mountaineer.. He was educated at Haileybury and at Magdalene College, Cambridge where he was a member of a literary club and where he made the acquaintance of Arthur Tedder, the future Marshal of the Royal Air Force.. He passed his Bachelor of Law degree and had applied to the Inner Temple in London to become a barrister when, in 1914, war broke out..Trafford married Doris Sawyer in 1915; the couple had two children..Leigh-Mallory immediately volunteered to join a Territorial Force battalion of the King's (Liverpool Regiment) as a private.. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant on 3 October 1914 and transferred to the Lancashire Fusiliers though officer training kept him in England when his battalion embarked.. In the spring of 1915, he went to the front with the South Lancashire Regiment and was wounded during an attack at the Second Battle of Ypres.. He was promoted to lieutenant on 21 June 1915..After recovering from his wounds, Leigh-Mallory joined the Royal Flying Corps in January 1916 and was accepted for pilot training.. On 7 July 1916, he was posted, as a lieutenant in the RFC,to No. 7 Squadron, where he flew on bombing, reconnaissance and photographic operations during the Battle of the Somme..He was then transferred to No. 5 Squadron in July 1916 before returning to England. He was promoted to temporary captain) on 2 November 1916..Leigh-Mallory's first combat command was No. 8 Squadron in November 1917.. In the period after the Battle of Cambrai, No. 8 Squadron was involved in army cooperation, directing tanks and artillery.. At the Armistice, Leigh-Mallory was mentioned in dispatches and awarded the Distinguished Service Order...

BOAC York operating a freight schedule at Heathrow in 1953...

Leigh-Mallory took command of 12 Group and proved an energetic organiser and leader.. On 1 November 1938, he was promoted to Air Vice-Marshal,one of the younger AVMs then serving in the RAF.. He was greatly liked by his staff, but his relations with his airfield station commanders was strained.. It was said of him that he "never went for popularity but he always stuck up for his staff.. He was madly ambitious but he never trimmed for the sake of ambition"..During the Battle of Britain, Leigh-Mallory quarrelled with Air Vice-Marshal Keith Park, the commander of 11 Group. Park, who was responsible for the defence of south east England and London, had stated that 12 Group was not doing enough to protect the airfields in the south-east.. Leigh-Mallory, on the other hand, had devised with Acting Squadron Leader Douglas Bader, a massed fighter formation known as the Big Wing, which they used, with little success, to hunt German bomber formations..One of the reasons for Leigh-Mallory's appointment to command 11 Group was that he was seen as an offensively-minded leader in the Trenchard mould. Once appointed he soon introduced wing-sized fighter sweeps into France, known as "rodeos"..(When accompanied by bombers to provoke enemy fighters, these were known as "Circus" operations)..On 16 August 1944, with the Battle of Normandy almost over, Leigh-Mallory was appointed Air Commander-in-Chief of South East Asia Command (SEAC) with the temporary rank of air chief marshal..But before he could take up his post he and his wife were killed en route to Burma when Avro York MW126,in which they were flying, crashed in the French Alps, killing all on board.. A court of inquiry found that the accident was a consequence of bad weather and might have been avoided if Leigh-Mallory had not insisted that the flight proceed in such poor conditions against the advice of his aircrew.. His replacement at SEAC was his Battle of Britain rival Air Marshal Sir Keith Park..He and his wife are buried, alongside 10 aircrew, in Le Rivier d'Allemont, a short distance below the site of the air crash...

Race Against Darth

Wilfrid Reid "Wop" May OBE DFC (March 20, 1896 – June 21, 1952), was a Canadian flying ace in the First World War and a leading post-war aviator.. He was the final allied pilot to be pursued by Manfred von Richthofen before the German ace was shot down on the Western Front in 1918.. After the war, May returned to Canada pioneering the role of a bush pilot while working for Canadian Airways in Northern Alberta and the Northwest Territories..May was born in Carberry, Manitoba, son of a carriage maker.. His family moved to Edmonton in 1902, and while on the way they stayed with family and friends, and his two-year-old cousin, Mary Lumsden, could not pronounce Wilfrid and called him "Woppie".. This gave him his nickname "Wop". He attended Victoria School (Victoria School of Performing and Visual Arts) while in Edmonton...

Heinrich Gontermann's crashed Dr.I...

Wop is a pejorative slur used to describe Italians, or people from Italy..It originated between 1910 and 1915 in the United States. According to Merriam-Webster, its first known use was in 1908.. The commonly accepted etymology is that it originates from a southern Italian dialect term guappo, meaning thug, derived from the Spanish term guapo, meaning handsome, via dialectical French, meaning ruffian or pimp.. This also has roots in the Latin vappa, meaning wine gone flat..Another theory is that the term WOP is originally from an acronym that stood for "With Out Papers".. Many of the immigrants that came to Ellis Island in the '20s had to be separated into waiting areas because they lacked documentation..Ballarat Airport (ICAO: YBLT) (known officially as the Ballarat Aerodrome) is located 4 nautical miles (7.4 km; 4.6 mi) west of Ballarat in the outer suburb of Mitchell Park, Victoria, Australia..In 1940 the site was resumed by the Commonwealth of Australia and a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) airfield known as Empire Air Training Scheme No 1 Wireless Air Gunners School was established (EATS 1 WAGS) at the Ballarat Showgrounds on 22 April 1940...

Sopwith Camel British First World War single-seat biplane fighter...

On April 20, 1918, May fought his first aerial combat. The German Fokker Triplane crashed of its own accord during the brief fight..The following day, April 21, 1918, saw 209 Squadron again on patrol. Due to his inexperience, Brown gave May similar instructions as before – he was to stay out of the fights and simply keep an eye out.. Around 10 a.m. the squadron attacked a group of Triplanes.. During the dogfighting, May circled above.. But when he spotted another plane doing the same thing he decided to launch an attack..May chased the aircraft which fled into the middle of the dogfight.. But when his machine guns jammed, May quickly dived out of combat.. Unknown to anyone, May's target was Wolfram von Richthofen, cousin of Manfred von Richthofen, the "Red Baron".. Wolfram had also been given orders to sit out above the fight and watch because he was a novice flyer, too..On seeing his cousin being attacked, Manfred started to chase May as he turned to pull out of the dogfight with jammed guns.. Roy Brown, who was flying above, also noticed the Red Baron peeling off to attack May.. Diving in from behind, Brown intercepted von Richthofen's red Triplane..

After returning to Edmonton at the end of the war, May and his brother rented a Curtiss JN-4 Jenny and started May Airplanes Ltd., opening Canada's first airfield (or aeroport) in a rented pasture in the neighborhood now known as Mayfield.. They appeared at various functions during 1919, and would now be considered to be one of the first barnstorming companies in the world..May and Gorman were hired by Imperial Oil Limited to fly 2 Junkers airplanes, equipped with skis, from New York to Edmonton in early 1921. Imperial Oil planned to fly these planes into the Northwest Territories to service its proposed oil developments along the Mackenzie River at what later became known as Norman Wells..In early 1932 May was involved in another manhunt, this time for Albert Johnson, soon known as the "Mad Trapper of Rat River." While serving a search warrant for illegal trapping on the Rat River, Constable King of the RCMP was shot and wounded by Johnson, sparking off a long chase that became front-page news across the continent..With the start of the Second World War, it was decided that Canada would become the major place of training for pilots in the RAF joining from countries in the British Commonwealth.. The British Commonwealth Air Training Plan set up airfields across Canada, and May became the commander of the No.2 Air Observer School in Edmonton, as well as supervisor of all the western schools..While this was going on the United States was also ferrying huge numbers of aircraft to the Soviet Union, flying through Edmonton on their way. A number of these crashed due to mechanical problems, in which case there was no way for an injured pilot to get out of the "back country" when this happened..The idea came up that a team of parachute jumpers should be formed that could be dropped in on the crash sites to stabilize the injuries and start moving the pilots out of the bush.. Early efforts were comical but dangerous, but the US trained a number of jumpers at a smokejumper school in Montana, and it was not long before the Para-Rescue team was in service..May was on vacation with his son Denny on June 21, 1952.. He died from a stroke while hiking to Timpanogos Cave near American Fork, Utah..There is the standard tour going through the cave system, and an Introduction to Caving tour which teaches Leave No Trace caving and goes further into Hansen Cave..The city of Edmonton, Alberta named the neighbourhood of Mayfield in honour of Wop May...

Squadron leader
Squadron leader's insignia...

Squadron leader is a commissioned rank in the Royal Air Force and the air forces of many countries which have historical British influence.. It is also sometimes used as the English translation of an equivalent rank in countries which have a non-English air force-specific rank structure.. In these cases a squadron leader ranks above flight lieutenant and immediately below wing commander..It has a NATO ranking code of OF-3, equivalent to a lieutenant-commander in the Royal Navy or a major in the British Army or the Royal Marines.. The equivalent rank in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force, Women's Royal Air Force and Princess Mary's Royal Air Force Nursing Service was "squadron officer"..The rank originated in the British Royal Air Force and was adopted by several other air forces which use, or used, the RAF rank system...Before the Second World War, a squadron leader commanded a squadron of aircraft.. Today, however, a flying squadron is usually commanded by a wing commander, with each of the two flights under a squadron leader.. However, ground-operating squadrons which are sub-divisions of a wing are ordinarily commanded by a squadron leader. This includes squadrons of the RAF Regiment and University Air Squadrons..In the British Household Cavalry and Royal Armoured Corps, "squadron leader" is the title (but not the rank) often given to the commander of a squadron (company) of armoured fighting vehicles.. The squadron leader is usually a major, although in the Second World War the post was often held by a captain...

Beric had wanted to be a doctor, but his family had no money, so he joined the Royal Air Force instead.. He was awarded a British Empire Medal for gallantry in May 1943 after helping to save the crew of an aircraft that had crashed into the Chipping Warden air base in Oxfordshire.. Along with a Squadron Leader, he ran into the burning aircraft, without protective clothing, and saved the life of a crew member who was trapped inside..After the war, Beric became a clerk in the Gents' clock factory, and the family lived in a terraced house on Lead Street, near Wharf Street in the centre of Leicester..The British Empire Medal, which may be awarded posthumously, is granted in recognition of meritorious civil or military service.. Recipients are entitled to use the post-nominal letters "BEM"..The honour is divided into civil and military medals in a similar way to the Order of the British Empire itself.. Like the ribbons used for other classes of the Order of the British Empire, the ribbon of the British Empire Medal is rose-pink with pearl-grey edges, with the addition of a pearl-grey central stripe for the military division...

General der Flieger Arabesque...

Ritter von Pohl (15 April 1893 – 26 July 1951) was a highly decorated General der Flieger in the Luftwaffe during World War II.. He was also a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross..The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership.. Maximilian Ritter von Pohl was captured by American troops in May 1945 and was held until 1947..General der Flieger (literally: General of the Flyers) was a General of the branch rank of the German Luftwaffe..
The One That Got Away Theatrical Poster...

The Knight's Cross was the highest award made by Nazi Germany to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or outstanding military leadership during World War II.. In the military orders of the Third Reich, it was second only to the Grand Cross of the Iron Cross (Großkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes), an award that was given only once, to Nazi leader and Hitler's second-in-command Hermann Göring.. He was granted it as a result of his services in building up the Luftwaffe (the German air force), and for serving as its commander-in-chief.. The Knight's Cross was therefore functionally the highest order that German soldiers of all rank could obtain...

It's not the size of the dog in the fight
The Exorcist Merrin VS Pazuzu...

It's the size of the fight in the dog..The term dogfight has been used for centuries to describe a melee; a fierce, fast-paced battle between 2 or more opponents..The term gained popularity during World War II, although its origin in air combat can be traced to the latter years of World War I..The first written reference to the modern day usage of the word comes from Fly Papers, by A. E. Illingworth, in 1919, “The battle develops into a ‘dog-fight’, small groups of machines engaging each other in a fight to the darth.”.. The term fighter ace generally applies to any pilot who eliminates 5 opponent craft in the air (or, in Germany during World War I, ten aircraft), although not necessarily in a dogfight..The Scissors is an aerial dog fighting maneuver, commonly used by military fighter pilots before the advent of high thrust-to-weight fighters (which allow for extended maneuvering in the vertical plane) in the late 1950s to mid-1960s and later, and before the perfection of the all-aspect air-to-air missile, and reliable BVR (beyond-visual-range) weapons...Modern day fighter pilots have compared dogfighting—with its intense maneuvering, leaving little margin for error—akin to "knife fighting in a phone booth"...

An F-105D shoots down a MiG-17 during the Vietnam War, 1967...

Airplane technology rapidly increased in sophistication after World War I.. By 1936, dogfighting was thought to be a thing of the past, since aircraft were reaching top speeds of over 250 miles per hour (400 km/h)..The experiences of the Spanish civil war proved this theory was wrong..At the beginning of the war, new tactics were developed, most notably in the Luftwaffe Condor Legion..Aircraft such as the Nakajima Ki-27 and Nakajima Ki-43 and the Mitsubishi A6M Zero in Japan, and the Fiat G.50 and Macchi C.200 in Italy epitomised a generation of monoplanes designed to this concept..Immediately following the Spanish civil war came World War II, during which dogfighting was most prevalent.. It was widely believed that strategic bombing alone was synonymous with air power; a fallacy that would not be fully understood until Vietnam..Dogfighting was very prominent in the skies over Europe..After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, in the Hawaiian Islands, the United States entered the war.. The Japanese used the Mitsubishi A6M Zero, an extremely lightweight fighter known for its exceptional range and maneuverability...

Technology advanced extremely fast during World War II in ways that would change dogfighting forever. Jet propulsion had been demonstrated long before the war, by German engineer Hans von Ohain in 1934, and by British engineer Frank Whittle in 1937..Enemy pilots were construed as weak and evil.. For example in World War II, describing the Soviet tactics, the Luftwaffe claimed that, "The characteristic feature of the average Soviet fighter pilot were a tendency toward caution and reluctance instead of toughness and stamina, brute strength instead of genuine combat efficiency, abysmal hatred instead of fairness and chivalry..Although usually outnumbered, the Israelis managed to defeat the air forces of Egypt, Jordan and Syria in dogfights, often achieving kill ratios ranging from 10:1 to over 20:1, which is usually attributed to better training of the Israeli pilots and a technological advantage..By the end of the 1971 war, the Indians claimed 44 kills (all confirmed or probable) and 24 losses in dogfights, while Pakistan claimed 156 kills (38 confirmed or probable) and 55 losses.. The Sea Harrier, being initially designed as a ground-attack fighter, was equipped not for dogfighting but for Soviet bomber interception; thus the aircraft had to undergo many modifications, and the pilots needed extra training..In the Gulf War of dogfighting once again proved its usefulness when the Coalition Air Force had to face off against the Iraqi Air Force, which at the time was the 5th largest in the world.. By the second day of the war, the U.S. achieved air superiority..During the Balkans conflict, 5 MiG-29s of the Yugoslav Air Force were shot down in dogfights with NATO aircraft..Superiority in a dogfight can depend on a pilot's experience and skill, and the agility of his fighter when flown at minimum air speeds approaching loss of control (causing a danger of stalling); the winner typically plays to the strengths of his own aircraft while forcing his adversary to fly at a design disadvantage..Today modern advances in the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle have thrown into question the continuing relevance of dogfighting.. A computer-chip can be subject to far greater G-forces than a human pilot even with a G-suit...

During World War I, T.E. Lawrence used the historic castle in Azraq and the plains at that site as a base for use as a landing ground for the aircraft which were supporting the column pushing north towards Syria.. The main qualities of the area were its good visibility and fine weather for flying..Jordan gained independence in 1946, but its first air bases had been set up in 1931 by the Royal Air Force.. By 1950, Jordan began to develop a small air arm which came to be known as the Arab Legion Air Force (ALAF).. The Royal Air Force assisted in training this small air arm and provided equipment.. The ALAF's primary fighter was the de Havilland Vampire and a Vickers VC.1 Viking was operated as a VIP aircraft for use by the King of Jordan.. By 1955 King Hussein realized the need for Jordan to have a more modern Air force, and on 25 September 1955 the RJAF was established.. By 1958 the Royal Air Force had left Jordan and the RJAF had taken control of the airfields in the country..

F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft of the Air Forces of Jordan and the United States at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, Azraq, Jordan...

By the 60's, the RJAF had a fleet of Hawker Hunters in the fighter role, with C-47 Dakota cargo planes and helicopters used in the transport role. 1964 brought the RJAF's first victory in the air.. In the Battle of the Dead Sea, 4 Hawker Hunters shot down one Israeli Mirage III and damaged 3 others..During the 67 Six-Day War, the RJAF destroyed an Israeli Nord Noratlas on the grounds of Sirkin air base before an Israeli counterstrike destroyed the RJAF on the ground and in their hangars decisively removing the RJAF from the war..In the 70's the RJAF was modernised.. Lockheed F-104 Starfighters were acquired from the United States following heavy losses in the Six-Day War.. However, the Starfighter proved superfluous and several were donated to the Pakistan Air Force with the last unit withdrawn from service in 77 leaving a fighter gap that would not be filled until the arrival of the Dassault Mirage F1 in 81..In the 80's, the RJAF supported Saddam Hussein and the Iraqi regime during the Iran-Iraq War, committing their aircraft for combat training alongside Iraqi aircraft squadrons with one joint aircraft squadron..

It has been claimed that newly stamped ammunition crates from the Jordanian Armed Forces were found in the possession of Iraqi forces during Desert Storm, and repair tags from the Jordanian Air Force were found on I-Hawk missile system components that the Iraqi forces captured during their invasion of Kuwait and which Iraq tried to field against the coalition forces..U.S. military assistance has been primarily directed toward upgrading Jordan’s air force, as recent purchases include upgrades to U.S.-made F-16 fighters, air-to-air missiles, and radar systems..RJAF pilots have participated in 'Bright Star' in Egypt against regional F-16 Fighting Falcons and have improved their skills considerably, especially in defining critical areas of upgrading..Some 17 Block 15 F-16s were sent to Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) where they were upgraded to MLU (Block 40) standard, this enabling advanced AGMs and latest PGMs to be carried..The Jordanian Special Operations Aviation Brigade has been using Sikorsky UH-60L Blackhawk and MD Helicopters MD-530F helicopters for special operations and border security..On 23 September 2014, Jordanian air force aircraft joined in US-led air strikes against terrorist targets in Syria that later became known as Operation Inherent Resolve..The Royal Jordanian Air Force consists of about 12,000 officers and non-commissioned officers and a civilian..The 5 Extra 300 aerobatic aircraft of the Royal Jordanian Falcons are operated by RJAF pilots, but owned by Royal Jordanian Airlines...

Captain M
Captain Muath al-Kasasbeh...

Muath Safi Yousef Al-Kasasbeh ( معاذ صافي يوسف الكساسبة‎ ; 29 May 1988 – c. 3 January 2015) was a Royal Jordanian Air Force pilot.. He was captured, held hostage, and burned alive by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL)..Al-Kasasbeh's F-16 fighter aircraft crashed near Raqqa, Syria, on 24 December 2014 during the military intervention against ISIL.. United States and Jordanian officials said that the crash was caused by mechanical problems, while the Islamic State claimed that the plane was hit by a heat-seeking missile..After the Jordanian government insisted on proof that al-Kasasbeh was alive before it would exchange al-Rishawi, the Islamic State released a video on 3 February 2015 showing al-Kasasbeh being burned to death while trapped inside a cage...

The Clash - Rock the Kasbah..

The plane al-Kasasbeh was piloting, a Lockheed Martin F-16 formerly used by the Royal Belgian Air Force, crashed after suffering from mechanical problems on 24 December 2014 during a bombing raid on a brick factory..He ejected and parachuted into a lake near Raqqa, Syria.. He was quickly captured by bearded Islamic State militants with Kalashnikovs and pulled from the water, naked from the waist down..An airborne search had been launched after he went down according to US officials, but he was not able to evade capture..The video shows him with a black left eye, first at a table and then confined in a black steel cage..Later on 4 February, Jordan launched its first military response to al-Kasasbeh's killing.. Jordanian warplanes bombed ISIL positions in Mosul, killing 55 ISIL fighters, including a senior commander..The following day, Jordan launched airstrikes against ISIL weapons and munition warehouses and training camps.. According to U.S. officials, the attacks took place near Ar-Raqqah and involved 20 Jordanian F-16s, and American refueling and radio jamming aircraft assisted.. After the jets completed their mission, they overflew al-Kasasbeh's hometown of Karak while on their way back to base.. The Jordan Radio and Television Corporation aired footage shot prior to those attacks, of pilots scribbling messages onto bombs slated to be used in the strikes. "For you, the enemies of Islam," read one message.. Others bore verses from the Quran..ISIL said that the killing could be justified by Islamic law.. Clerics and leading figures of the Islamic world roundly condemned it as murder..

Tis a Bomber
A-20 Havoc/Boston in Colour - Part 1 ..

The Douglas A-20 Havoc (company designation DB-7) was an American attack, light bomber, intruder and night fighter aircraft of World War II. It served with several Allied air forces, principally the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF), the Soviet Air Forces (VVS), Soviet Naval Aviation (AVMF) and the Royal Air Force (RAF) of the United Kingdom. Soviet units received more than one in three (2,908 aircraft) of the DB-7s ultimately built.. It was also used by the air forces of Australia, South Africa, France, and the Netherlands during the war, and by Brazil afterwards..In British Commonwealth air forces, bomber/attack variants of the DB-7 were usually known by the service name Boston, while night fighter and intruder variants were usually known as Havoc.. An exception to this was the Royal Australian Air Force, which referred to all variants of the DB-7 by the name Boston..The USAAF referred to night fighter variants as P-70...

Servicing an A-20 bomber, Langley Field, Va., July 1942..

The DB-7s were shipped in sections to Casablanca for assembly and service in France and French North Africa..When the Germans attacked France and the Low Countries on 10 May 1940, the 64 available DB-7s were deployed against the advancing Germans. Before the armistice they were evacuated to North Africa to avoid capture by German forces.. Here, they fell under control of the Vichy government, briefly engaging the Allies during the Operation Torch..The remainder of the order which was to have been delivered to France was instead taken up by the UK via the British Purchasing Commission.. In the course of the war, 24 squadrons operated the Boston..Through Lend-Lease, Soviet forces received more than 2-thirds of version A-20B planes manufactured and a significant portion of versions G and H.. The A-20 was the most numerous foreign aircraft in the Soviet bomber inventory.. The Soviet Air Force had more A-20s than the USAAF..They were delivered via the ALSIB (Alaska-Siberia) air ferry route..By the end of the war, 3,414 A-20s had been delivered to the USSR, 2,771 of which were used by the Soviet Air Force..

The Royal Air Force agreed to take up the balance of the French order which was diverted to the UK and the bombers were given the service name "Boston", with the further designation of "Mark I" or "Mark II" according to the earlier or later engine type..Havoc I The aircraft was generally unsuitable for use by the RAF since its range was too limited for daylight raids on Germany..Havoc-Pandora Trials conducted with lone Handley Page Harrows dropping LAMs into the stream of German bombers were not successful, and the Havocs were converted back to Mk I intruders..Havoc I Turbinlite Havoc fitted with a 2,700 million candela searchlight in the nose; the batteries for it carried in the bomb bay.. Boston III DB-7B was the first batch of this model to be ordered directly by the Royal Air Force..A variation on the DB-7B/Boston III built for a French government order and featuring French instruments and secondary equipment; of the 480 DB-73s ordered by France, 240 were built by under license by the Boeing Company in Seattle..

DB-7C -This was a Dutch Indies Air Force version intended for service in the Dutch East Indies, but the Japanese conquest of the East Indies was complete before they were delivered.. Part of this order was stranded in Australia in the so-called "lost convoy", and the first 31 Bostons were assembled at Richmond Airbase in New South Wales and flown by No. 22 Squadron RAAF during the campaign against Buna, Gona, and Lae, New Guinea..The U.S. Army ordered 123 A-20As with R-2600-3 engines, and 20 more with the more powerful R-2600-11. .The A-20B received the first really large order from the Army Air Corps: 999 aircraft..The A-20J carried an additional bombardier in an extended acrylic glass nose section..The A-20K (Boston Mk V in RAF parlance) was the final production version of the A-20 series, the same as the A-20J except for R-2600-29s instead of -23s..In October 1940, the USAAC felt a need for long-range fighters more than attack bombers, sixty of the production run of A-20s were converted to P-70 night fighters, all delivered by September 1942..In 1948, the last surviving A-20H in United States service was redesignated "B-20" with the elimination of the 'A for Attack' category, and was given the "Z" prefix as being obsolete..The F-3A was a conversion of forty-six A-20J and K models for night-time photographic reconnaissance (F-3 were 3 conversions of the original A-20)...

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip visiting Stephenville...

This place was formerly known as the Acadian village, between 1848 and 1870.. The populace of the village consisted of Roman Catholics who eked out a living, farming and fishing.. The town's population continued to grow because of the stable economy.. It was also formerly home to Ernest Harmon AFB, which was operated by the United States Army Air Forces and later the United States Air Force from 1941 to 66...Stephenville is a city in and the county seat of Erath County, Texas, United States..The population was 17,123 at the 2010 census.. Founded in 1856, it is home to Tarleton State University.. Stephenville is among several communities that call themselves the "Cowboy Capital of the World"..Coal mining also became important to the area in 1886 and was a major source of economy for the following 3 decades...

"Shield Strategic Air Command"...

Ernest Harmon Air Force Base is a former United States Air Force base located in Stephenville, Newfoundland and Labrador.. The base was built by the United States Army Air Forces in 1941 under the Destroyers for Bases Agreement with the United Kingdom..The airfield is now operated as Stephenville International Airport while many of the base's support buildings and housing have been incorporated into the town of Stephenville..The Cold War expansion of the base in the early 1950s coincided with the Korean War and the rise in nuclear tensions with the Soviet Union.. The USAF sought to build more roads in the area to serve the base and nearby Pinetree Line early warning radar site and to patrol the immediate area for security; the roads would also act as a means of dispersing personnel in an emergency.. One of the more important projects was a bypass road around the base, known as the Hansen Memorial Highway..Local priest Father Sears established a church in the coastal community of Stephenville and by 1884 there were 4 Catholic schools in the parish.. One at Sandy Point, one at the Highlands, one at Port aux Basques and one at Campbell's Creek.Protestant schools were subsequently established in the St. George's Bay area as settlements grew...

Russian Air Force
Spotting RAmbo from a helicopter..

The Russian Air Force (Военно-воздушные cилы России, tr. Voyenno-Vozdushnye Sily Rossii)-(RAF) is the aerial warfare service branch of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. It is currently under the command of Lieutenant General Viktor Bondarev.. The Russian Navy has its own air arm, the Russian Naval Aviation, which is the former Soviet Aviatsiya Voyenno Morskogo Flota ("Naval Aviation"), or AV-MF)..The Air Force was formed from parts of the former Soviet Air Forces after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991–92. Boris Yeltsin's creation of the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation on 7 May 1992, can be taken as a convenient formation date for the new Air Force. Since that time, the Air Force has suffered severe setbacks due to lack of resources, and has constantly shrunk in size. Since Vladimir Putin became President of the Russian Federation however, much more money has been allocated to the Armed Forces as a whole...

The Mil Mi-28 (NATO reporting name "Havoc") is a Russian all-weather, day-night, military tandem, two-seat anti-armor attack helicopter.. It is a dedicated attack helicopter with no intended secondary transport capability, better optimized than the Mil Mi-24 gunship for the role.. It carries a single gun in an undernose barbette, plus external loads carried on pylons beneath stub wings..The design incorporated a 23 mm cannon (most likely GSh-23L) for defense in the forward hemisphere and a 12.7 mm machine gun (most likely Yak-B) for defense in the rear. Fuselage fairings containing fuel would replace stub wings with missiles mounted above on special hardpoints..The Mi-28N was unveiled in 1995, the N designation meaning "night"...

The Russian Airey Force is an independent organization.. The RAF follows the same rank structure as the Russian Ground Forces, with the addition of the title "of aviation" to each officers rank, now abandoned..Russian armed forces have two styles of ranks - troop ranks (army style) and deck ranks (navy style ).. The army uses troop ranks, and so does the Air Force..The title Chief of Staff identifies the leader of a complex organization, institution, or body of persons and it also may identify a Principal Staff Officer (PSO), who is the coordinator of the supporting staff or a primary aide-de-camp to an important individual, such as a president or a senior military officer..In July 2011, Bondarev was appointed Chief of Staff–Deputy Commander of the Russian Air Force..He replaced Alexander Zelin, who was dismissed from the military on 27 April..On 21 April 2000, via a presidential decree, Bondarev was named a Hero of the Russian Federation for engaging in military activities involving significant risks to his life...

Ex-Armed Forces chiefs last night claimed the UK "could not cope" if Russian president Vladimir Putin ordered an assault on Britain..The comments came after RAF Typhoon aircraft were scrambled to intercept two Russian bombers flying off the coast of Cornwall earlier this week...

The Russian president, in London to watch Olympic judo, talks world affairs, human rights and trade with the PM ..

"They fly in these regions to check our air defences and have probably worked out we are not as sharp as we were.."They know it is provocative and they are doing it at a time when defence in the West is pretty wet compared to where they are"..Air Commodore Andrew Lambert, former director of defence studies for the RAF, also told the newspaper the UK's airforce would be "overwhelmed" by an attack from Russia because of its small size.."If the Russians turned up the heat, we would struggle badly," he said.."If Putin wanted to attack, he would not send a pair of bombers, he would send the lot and saturate our defences; we couldn't cope.."The Russians would outflank us, go around us or just go through us"..That ritualistic battle over for another week, Hague turned to face off another opponent..Friends say his increased confidence and willingness to attack are the results of regular judo sessions with his sparring partner Sebastian Coe ..Stanley Park is a 1,001-acre public park that borders the downtown of Vancouver, Canada and is almost entirely surrounded by waters of Vancouver Harbour and English Bay..

In Chilean history, Saber-noise or saber-rattling (ruido de sables) was an incident that took place on September 3, 1924, when a group of young military officers protested against the political class and the postponement of social measures by rattling their sabers within their scabbards..The term is now applied generally to cover any indication of military aggressiveness.. In a sense, strategically timed war games can serve as an explicit form of saber-rattling, in that the extent of a country's military muscle is put up on display for other countries..Everybody in this family needs to just calm down and eat some fruit or something.. Hercules Wings
The Doors Live a Miami TRACCIA AUDIO 5 To One ..

The 2005 Royal Air Force Hercules shootdown was the loss of a Royal Air Force Lockheed C-130K Hercules C3, serial number XV179,(1+7+9=East 17) callsign Hilton 22, when it was shot down in Iraq, probably by Sunni insurgents, on 30 January 2005, killing all 10 personnel on board.. At the time, the incident was the largest single loss of life suffered by the British military during Operation Telic..On 30 January 2005, Hercules XV179 took off from Baghdad at 1622 local time.. It was to fly at low level to Balad to deliver freight and the single passenger Acting L/Cpl Steven Jones of the Royal Signals.. Six minutes later it reported a fire on board, L/Cpl Jones, stating: "No duff, no duff, We are on fire, we are on fire".. and it was confirmed "missing" at 1655.. You wouldn't be trying to blackmail old J.R., would you?..

American Apache helicopters located the crash site 45 minutes after the distress call.. As the site was in a hostile area, the priority was for human remains, personal effects and classified material to be recovered at the time.. Part of the right hand wing had been detached and it was found over a mile from the crash site.. The investigating team was only able to spend a short time at both sites.. By 3 February the site had been looted and the wreckage taken; it was decided not to attempt to recover the wreckage from the looters.. Those killed included 8 crew from RAF Lyneham in Wiltshire, another RAF serviceman and one soldier..The aircraft was fitted with various defences including the "Nemesis Directional Infra-Red Countermeasures", flares, chaff and a missile warning system...

A Hercules C3 similar to the aircraft shot down..

The Board came to the conclusion that the aircraft had been shot down by ground fire; a projectile had penetrated the starboard wing fuel tank, causing a fire in the wing, the subsequent explosion leading to the loss of 23 ft of wing including the aileron..An internal RAF investigation concluded that a foam suppressant system might have prevented the loss of the aircraft and that "as a matter of urgency" all aircraft exposed to such risks should be fitted, at a cost of £600,000 each..RAF Lyneham was the Royal Air Force's principal Transport hub, operating the modern Lockheed Martin C-130J Hercules, and the aging, but very adaptable, Lockheed C-130K Hercules.. The airfield was designated as a Master Diversion Airfield..The airfield became renowned for being the "gateway" between the United Kingdom and Afghanistan; the station was also where repatriation of British personnel killed in Iraq and Afghanistan took place. The bodies were transported through the nearby town of Royal Wootton Bassett, with crowds lining the streets to pay tribute to the fallen..The station was opened on 18 May 1940 as No. 33 Maintenance Unit, with no ceremony and few personnel..Individuals who were exposed to DES during their mothers' pregnancies are commonly referred to as "DES daughters" and "DES sons"...

Steve will forever be in the hearts of those that knew him best.. The family would like to request that they and his friends are allowed to grieve together in peace...

The aircraft was on a flight between Baghdad International Airport and Balad airbase when it crashed.. UK and US forces have secured the crash site, and are now recovering the bodies, and attempting to ascertain the cause of the crash.. We are aware of reports that the aircraft may have been shot down, but we are not in a position to come to any conclusions until the investigation is complete.."I can only echo the sentiment of the Prime Minister in recognising the sacrifice of these Servicemen"...Up to 5 of the planes – more than a 10th of the fleet – have developed the potentially dangerous defect, according to documents leaked to The Sunday Telegraph..The report adds that with a further 5 C130s being retired from service this summer, the future for military training exercises is "bleak"...

Anaconda Camp
Laurel & Hardy - Bonnie Scotland ...

Joint Base Balad, formerly Balad Air Base and Logistics Support Area Anaconda, or simply LSA Anaconda - formerly known as Al-Bakr Air Base (Arabic: قاعدة البكر الجوية‎)and known in popular media as Camp Anaconda - was one of the largest United States military bases in Iraq during the Iraq War.. It was formerly the largest Iraqi Air Force base during the Saddam Hussein era..Located near Balad, Iraq in the Sunni Triangle 40 miles (64 km) north of Baghdad..As American forces left Iraq, Joint Base Balad was returned to the Iraqi Air Force in December 2011..

U.S. soldiers from Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division during Operation Anaconda..

Joint Base Balad was formerly known as al-Bakr AB, named in honor of Ahmed Hassan al-Bakr, the president of Iraq from 1968-79.. It was considered by many in the Iraqi military to be the most important airfield of the Iraqi Air Force.. During most of the 1980s, it operated with at least a brigade level force, with two squadrons of MiG-23 fighters.. al-Bakr AB was especially well known for the large number of hardened aircraft shelters (HAS) built by the Yugoslavs during the Iran-Iraq War in the mid-1980s. It had four hardened areas—one each on either end of the main runways—with approximately 30 individual aircraft shelters..The Army's 310th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) and the Air Force's 332d Air Expeditionary Wing were headquartered at JBB..Camp Anaconda has also been more colloquially-termed "Life Support Area Anaconda" or the "Big Snake"..It housed 28,000 military personnel and 8,000 civilian contractors.. Like most large bases in Iraq, LSA Anaconda offered amenities, circa 2006 and later, including a base movie theater, (Sustainer Theater) two base PX's, fast food courts including Popeyes, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell (2007), Burger King,Green Beans Coffee, a Turkish Cafe with Turkish food prepared by Turks, an Iraqi Bazaar which sold bootleg movies, Cuban cigars, and fake name brand watches, multiple gyms, dance lessons, an olympic size swimming pool, and an indoor swimming pool..Although whiskey, coffee and cream are the basic ingredients in all Irish coffee, variations in preparation exist.. The choice of coffee and the methods used for brewing it differ significantly...

1861 characterized map of Scott's Anaconda plan..

Starting in 2003, several mortar rounds and rockets were fired per day, usually hitting the empty space between the runways, although there were isolated injuries and fatalities.. By mid-2006, this rate had dropped about 40%.. Due to these attacks, the soldiers and airmen refer to the base as "Mortaritaville", though this name is shared with other bases in Iraq..Joint Base Balad had a burn pit operation as late as the summer of 2008 burning 147 tons of waste per day when the Army Times published a major story about it and about health concerns. Respiratory difficulties and headaches were reported.. also home to the Air Force Theater Hospital, a Level I trauma center which boasts a 98% survival rate for wounded Americans and Iraqis alike..The base came under attack by ISIS militants in late June 2014, with the insurgents launching mortar attacks and reportedly surrounding the base of 3 sides..The base is due to be home to Iraqi Air Force's General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon's..

The Anaconda Plan or Scott's Great Snake is the name widely applied to an outline strategy for subduing the seceding states in the American Civil War.. Proposed by General-in-Chief Winfield Scott, the plan emphasized the blockade of the Southern ports, and called for an advance down the Mississippi River to cut the South in two.. Because the blockade would be rather passive, it was widely derided by the vociferous faction who wanted a more vigorous prosecution of the war, and who likened it to the coils of an anaconda suffocating its victim.. The snake image caught on, giving the proposal its popular name..Where is Mr. Hardy?. I haven't seen him in the past 3 weeks..The facility consists of individual windowless concrete cells, each illuminated by a single light bulb glowing 24 hours a day...

The Taube was very popular prior to the First World War, and it was also used by the air forces of Italy and Austria-Hungary. Even the Royal Flying Corps operated at least one Taube in 1912.. Aerial Recon

Is reconnaissance for a military or strategic purpose that is conducted using reconnaissance aircraft.. This role can fulfil a variety of requirements, including the collection of imagery intelligence, observation of eminem maneuvers and artillery spotting...

Pigeon with German miniature camera, probably taken during the First World War..

The first use of airplanes in combat missions was by the Italian Air Force during the Italo-Turkish War of 1911-1912.. On 23 October 1911, an Italian pilot flew over the Turkish lines in Libya to conduct history's first aerial reconnaissance mission, and on 1 November 1911, the first ever aerial bomb was dropped on the Turkish troops in Libya..The first reconnaisance flight in Europe took place in Greece, over Thessaly, on October the 5th over the Ottoman army...The use of aerial photography rapidly matured during the First World War, as aircraft used for reconnaissance purposes were outfitted with cameras to record enemy mine movements and defences.. At the start of the conflict, the usefulness of aerial photography was not fully appreciated, with reconnaissance being accomplished with map sketching from the air..

Sir Robert then suffered a series of mental disorders and reportedly employed a food-taster to ensure that he was not being poisoned.. Sir Robert died on his yacht Liberty, on 14 April 1926, leaving his widow roughly £5.5 million.. Lady Houston left Jersey on the Liberty, negotiating with the British Government during passage to England the payment of £1.6 million in death duties..Lady Houston gave generously to British aviation.. In 1931, she donated £100,000 to Supermarine, allowing them to win the Schneider Trophy in that year..In 1933 she financed the Houston-Mount Everest Flight Expedition, in which aircraft flew over the summit of Everest for the first time.."Your achievement has thrilled me through, oh brave men of my heart.. If this does not make the Government sit up, nothing will.. Sleep well and feel proud of yourselves, as we all are.. Rule Britannia.. God bless you both"...

Made by our [British] German scientists and your film made by your [American] German scientists, into their satellite, made by their [Russian]German scientists...

Drift Ice Station Zebra, a British meteorological station built on an ice floe in the Arctic Sea, suffers a catastrophic oil fire; several of its men die, and their shelter and supplies are destroyed.. The survivors hole up in one hut with little food and heat..The American nuclear-powered submarine USS Dolphin is dispatched on a rescue mission.. Just before it departs, Dr. Carpenter, the narrator, is sent to accompany it..Under duress, Carpenter says that the station is actually a highly equipped listening post, keeping watch for nuclear missile launches from the Soviet Union, a statement which convinces the commander and the admiral.. Having obtained a bearing on the station, the Dolphin dives again, and succeeds in finding a lead 5 miles from the station.. He reveals that he is an MI6 officer, and that his real mission was to retrieve photographic film from a reconnaissance satellite ( Corona) that has photographed every missile base in the U.S..

Zebra Carriage..

Corona started under the name "Discoverer" as part of the WS-117L satellite reconnaissance and protection program of the US Air Force in 1956.. The WS-117L was based on recommendations and designs from the RAND Corporation..The United States Air Force credits the Onizuka Air Force Station as being the "birthplace of the Corona program..The Corona project was pushed forward rapidly following the shooting down of a U-2 spy plane over the Soviet Union in May 1960..The Corona satellites used special 70 millimeter film with a 24-inch (610 mm) focal length camera.. Manufactured by Eastman Kodak, the film was initially 0.0003 inches (7.6 µm) thick, with a resolution of 170 lines per 0.04 inches (1.0 mm) of film..Itek Corporation was a United States defense contractor that initially specialized in camera systems for spy satellites..The novel shows little overt Soviet interest in recovering the lost spy satellite other than a spy ship disguised as a fishing trawler waiting outside Holy Loch when the Tigerfish sets sail...

The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21 (Микоян и Гуревич МиГ-21; NATO reporting name: Fishbed) is a supersonic jet fighter aircraft, designed by the Mikoyan-Gurevich Design Bureau in the Soviet Union.. It was popularly nicknamed "Balalaika", from the aircraft's planform-view resemblance to the Russian stringed musical instrument or ołówek (English: pencil) by Polish pilots due to the shape of its fuselage...

A Bulgarian MiG-21 taxis at Graf Ignatievo Air Base..

In 1961, the Indian Air Force (IAF) opted to purchase the MiG-21 over several other Western competitors..The expansion of IAF MiG-21 fleet marked a growing India-Soviet Union military partnership which enabled India to field a formidable air force to counter Chinese and Pakistani threats.. In 1962, 20 MiG-21F-13s and MiG-21Us were received during Operation Trikora in the Western New Guinea conflict..The Indonesian Air Force purchased 22 MiG-21s..As may be seen from its range figures, the MiG-21 was designed for very short ground-controlled interception (GCI) missions. It became renowned for this type of mission in the skies over North Vietnam.. The first MiG-21s arrived directly from the Soviet Union by ship in April 1966..The MiG-21 was also used extensively in the Middle East conflicts of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s by Egyptian Air Force, Syrian Air Force and Iraqi Air Force..Egypt was shipped some American Sidewinder missiles, and these were fitted to their MiG-21s and successfully used in combat against Libyan Mirages and MiG-23s during the brief Libyan-Egyptian War of July 1977..During the Iran–Iraq War, 23 Iraqi MiG-21s were shot down by Iranian F-14s, confirmed by the Iranian, Western and Iraqi sources..Libyan MiG-21s saw limited service during the 2011 Libyan civil war..During the Ogaden War of 1977–78, Ethiopian Air Force F-5As engaged Somali Air Force MiG-21MFs in combat on several occasions..During Cuba's intervention in Angola's long-running civil war, MiG-21s of the Cuban Air Force were frequently deployed to attack ground targets manned by rebel forces or engage South African Air Force Mirage F1s conducting cross-border strikes..

MiG-21s, along with its Chinese copy (the F-7 Skybolt), flew ground sorties during the First and Second Congo Wars, sometimes being piloted by mercenaries..Yugoslavia purchased its first batch of MiG-21s in 1962 from the Soviet Union.. In the period from 1962 to the early 1980s Yugoslavia had purchased 261 MiG-21s in ten variants..Croatia acquired three MiG-21s in 1992 through defections by Croatian pilots serving with the JNA..The Bulgarian Air Force received a total of 224 MiG-21 aircraft. From September 1963 the 19th Fighter Regiment of the Air Force received 12 MiG-21F-13s. Later some of these aircraft were converted for reconnaissance as MiG-21F-13Rs, which were submitted to the 26th Reconnaissance Regiment in 1988..Several pilots have attained ace status (5 or more aerial victories/kills) while flying the MiG-21..Additionally, three Syrian pilots are known to have attained ace status while flying the MiG-21..Due to the incomplete nature of available records, there are several pilots who have un-confirmed aerial victories (probable kills), which when confirmed would award them "Ace" Status..Premier Space Systems in Hillsboro, Oregon is currently conducting flight tests for NanoLaunch, a project to launch suborbital sounding rockets from MiG-21s flying over the Pacific Ocean..Armament 1x internal 23 mm GSh-23 cannon, plus 2x R-27R1 or R-27T or 4x Vympel R-77...

One day in March, 1967, the Spanish-speaking intercept operators of Detachment "A" heard Cuban air defense radar controllers report an unidentified "bogey" approaching Cuba from the northeast.. The UFO entered Cuban air space at a height of about 10,000 meters (about 33,000 feet) and sped off at nearly Mach 1 (nearly 660 mph).. Two MIG-21 jet fighters were scrambled to meet it..The jets were guided to within 5 kilometers (three miles) of the UFO by Cuban ground control intercept radar personnel..The flight leader radioed that the object was a bright metallic sphere with no visible markings or appendages..At last report, it was heading south-southeast towards South America...

Dictator's Apprenticeship
Lancaster releases the main part of its load..

Bombing of Dresden was an attack on the city of Dresden, the capital of the German state of Saxony, that took place in the final months of the Second World War in the European Theatre.. In four raids between 13 and 15 February 1945, 722 heavy bombers of the British Royal Air Force (RAF) and 527 of the (USAAF) dropped more than 3,900 tons of high-explosive bombs and incendiary devices on the city.. The resulting firestorm destroyed 15 square miles (39 square kilometres) of the city centre. Between 22,700 and 25,000 people were killed..Post-war discussion of whether or not the attacks were justified has led to the bombing becoming one of the moral causes célèbres of the war..A 1953 United States Air Force report defended the operation as the justified bombing of a military and industrial target, which was a major rail transport and communication centre, housing 110 factories and 50,000 workers in support of the German war effort..Several researchers have claimed that not all of the communications infrastructure, such as the bridges, were targeted, nor were the extensive industrial areas outside the city centre.. Critics of the bombing argue that Dresden—sometimes referred to as "Florence on the Elbe" (Elbflorenz)—was a cultural landmark of little or no military significance, and that the attacks were indiscriminate area bombing and not proportionate to the commensurate military gains...

BOMBING OF DRESDEN 1945-Very Graphic ..

The ink wasn't dry on the Versailles Peace Treaty before the Illuminati started work on World War Two by building Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party..Communism, Nazism and Zionism are triplets, movements conceived and nurtured by the Illuminati to dupe and manipulate humanity..According to Brigitte Hamann, Hitler's best friends in pre-war Vienna were Jewish.. He benefited from Jewish charities and hospitality. Jews bought most of his artwork.. ("Hitler's Vienna: A Dictator's Apprenticeship," pp.347-352)..Currently there is nostalgia for Hitler based on the belief that he resisted the NWO.. In fact, he was created by the Illuminati to start another war.. It is possible that he broke with them at some point.. On the other hand, he may have deliberately sabotaged the Nazi cause by not promising to liberate the people under Communist yoke..Conflicts are charades between "antagonists" who actually serve the same masters..

Ernst Sedgewiek Hanfstaengl (or Hanfy or Putzi, as he was more usually called), like Hjalmar Horace Greeley Sehacht, was another German-American at the core of the rise of Hitlerism.. Hanfstaengl was born into a well-known New England family; he was a cousin of Civil War General John Sedgewiek and a grandson of another Civil War General, William Heine. Introduced to Hitler in the early l920s by Captain Truman-Smith, the U.S. Military Attaché in Berlin, Putzi became an ardent Hitler supporter, on occasion financed the Nazis and, according to Ambassador William Dodd, "... is said to have saved Hitler's life in 1923"..By coincidence, S.S. leader Heinrich Himmler's father was also Putzi's form master at the Royal Bavarian Wilhelms gymnasium..The Reichstag fire was deliberately set, probably utilizing a flammable liquid, by a group of experts..

Journey To Arnhemland ..

Gove Airport is located on the site of the former RAAF Base Gove.. This World War II airbase was built in 1943 and named for Pilot Officer William Gove who was killed in action.. During the war, the airfield was used by No. 83 Squadron RAAF flying CAC Boomerangs and No. 13 Squadron RAAF flying Lockheed Venturas, with No. 42 Squadron RAAF operating PBY Catalina flying boats out of nearby Drimmie Head.. At the height of operations, over 5,000 servicemen were stationed at the base.. The base closed in early 1946..There are two commerical accommodation properties in the town; the Walkabout Lodge and the Gove Peninsula Motel..

Rite of passage..

The Gove Peninsula is at the northeastern corner of Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory of Australia. The peninsula became strategically important during World War II when a Royal Australian Air Force base was constructed at what is now Gove Airport..Gove Harbour is a popular stop off point for yachts sailing the northern coast of Australia or heading to the countries to the north of Australia and beyond. Apart from the months of December to April when cyclones can affect the coast line, the waters surrounding the Gove Peninsula provide excellent sailing conditions..The Gove Boat Club is often packed full of visiting yachties from all over the world..Gove was born in Edinburgh; at four months old, he was adopted by a Labour-supporting family in Aberdeen, where he was brought up.. His adoptive father ran a fish processing business; his adoptive mother was a lab assistant at the University of Aberdeen before working at the Aberdeen School for the Deaf...

The Hawker Typhoon (Tiffy in RAF slang), was a British single-seat fighter-bomber, produced by Hawker Aircraft..When the Luftwaffe brought the formidable Focke-Wulf Fw 190 into service in 1941, the Typhoon was the only RAF fighter capable of catching it at low altitudes; as a result it secured a new role as a low-altitude interceptor..The Eurofighter Typhoon is a twin-engine, canard-delta wing, multirole fighter..The UK had identified a requirement for a new fighter as early as 1971.. The AST 403 specification, issued by the Air staff in 72, resulted in the P.96 conventional "tailed" design, which was presented in the late 70s.. The Typhoon is a highly agile aircraft at both supersonic and low speeds, achieved through having an intentionally relaxed stability design..The Typhoon features a glass cockpit without any conventional instruments..The Captor-M has 3 working channels, one intended for classification of jammer and for jamming suppression..In the event of pilot disorientation, the Flight Control System allows for rapid and automatic recovery by the simple press of a button..Traditionally each sensor in an aircraft is treated as a discrete source of information; however this can result in conflicting data and limits the scope for the automation of systems, hence increasing pilot workload..The Eurofighter is produced in single-seat and twin-seat variants.. The twin-seat variant is not used operationally, but only for training..A technology demonstration aircraft, the British Aerospace EAP, first took flight on 6 August 86; the first prototype of the finalised Eurofighter made its first flight on 27 March 1994...

A typhoon is a mature tropical cyclone that develops in the western part of the North Pacific Ocean between 180° and 100°E.. This region is referred to as the Northwestern Pacific Basin, and is the most active tropical cyclone basin on Earth, accounting for almost one-third of the world's annual tropical cyclones..According to Hesiod's Theogony, Typhon "was joined in love" to Echidna, a monstrous half-woman and half-snake, who bore Typhon "fierce offspring".. In the Orphic tradition, just as Set is responsible for the murder of Osiris, Typhon leads the Titans when they attack and kill Dionysus, who also became identified with the earlier Osiris..Dante Alighieri's Inferno mentions him amongst the Biblical and mythological giants frozen onto the rings outside of Hell's Circle of Treachery...

Other countries including Sweden, East and West Germany, Poland, Canada, USA and the Soviet Union were also involved in the international response..Aid Workers are the people distributed internationally to do humanitarian aid work..Aid Workers are exposed to tough conditions and have to be flexible, resilient and responsible in an environment that humans are not psychologically supposed to deal with, in such a severity that trauma is common...

Agatha Christie's:The Pale Horse..

Sir Max Edgar Lucien Mallowan, CBE (6 May 1904 – 19 August 1978) was a prominent British archaeologist, specialising in ancient Middle Eastern history, and the second husband of Dame Agatha Christie..He was the son of Frederick Mallowan and his wife Marguerite (née Duvivier).. He was educated at Rokeby School and Lancing College (where he was a contemporary of Evelyn Waugh) and studied classics at New College, Oxford...

Max & AC..

He first worked as an apprentice to Leonard Woolley at the archaeological site of Ur (1925–31), which was thought to be the capital of Mesopotamian civilization.. It was at the Ur site, in 1930, that he first met Agatha Christie.. He married Christie that year.. In 1932, after a short time working at Nineveh with Reginald Campbell Thompson, Mallowan became a field director for a series of expeditions jointly run by the British Museum and the British School of Archaeology in Iraq.. His excavations included the prehistoric village at Tell Arpachiyah, and the sites at Chagar Bazar and Tell Brak in the Upper Khabur area (Syria).. He was also the first to excavate archaeological sites in the Balikh Valley, to the west of the Khabur basin..

Following the outbreak of the Second World War he served with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve in North Africa, being based for part of 1943 at the ancient city of Sabratha.. He was commissioned as a pilot officer on probation in the Administrative and Special Duties Branch on 11 February 1941, promoted flying officer on 18 August 1941, flight lieutenant on 1 April 1943.. At some point he also held the rank of wing commander, for when he finally resigned his commission on 10 February 1954, he was permitted to retain that rank in retirement..Mallowan was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 1960 Queen's Birthday Honours, and knighted in 1968.. He and Dame Agatha Christie were among the small number of married couples, each of whom held knightly honours in their own right..This stuff I use, 1 in 10 might dye from it...

The RNZAF fought in World War II, Malaysia, Vietnam and the Gulf War plus various United Nations peacekeeping missions.. From a 1945 peak of over 1,000 combat aircraft the RNZAF has shrunk to a strength of around 62 aircraft in 2010, focusing on maritime patrol and transport duties in support of the Royal New Zealand Navy and the New Zealand Army.. The Air Force is led by an air vice-marshal who holds the appointment of Chief of Air Force..The kiwi roundel is now frequently a black circle around a black kiwi (Hercules, Iroquois) or two-tone grey (Orion, Sea Sprite).. The nose is always forward and on wings the legs are inwards, towards to the fuselage..RNZAF rank titles and uniform remain similar to the Royal Air Force..Kerr moved to New Zealand in 1958, becoming chief chef catering adviser for the Royal New Zealand Air Force..Kerr and his wife Treena were involved in a car accident in California.. As a result of the accident, he suffered a dislocated spine and a weakened right arm.."Through adversity to the stars"..

Biggles of 136..

Biggles first appeared in the story "The White Fokker", published in the first issue of Popular Flying magazine, in 1932.. The first collection of Biggles stories, The Camels Are Coming, was published that same year..Posted to France with under 15 hours, dual and solo, he first flew in combat in September 1916 with 169 Squadron, RFC..His observer was another youth named Mark Way, a New Zealander..The Biggles character himself was brought up in India, speaks fluent Hindi, and has a number of Indian friends and colleagues...

Biggles 1986 Clip..

Biggles first appears as a teenaged "scout" (fighter) pilot in the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) during World War I..He is occasionally given "special" (secret) missions by the shadowy figure of Colonel (initially Major) Raymond (Wing Commander/Air Commodore in later books, reflecting the creation of the Royal Air Force with its own ranks), who is already involved with the intelligence side of operations..On 16 September 1918 his De Havilland DH4 was shot down on a bombing raid..His observer, Lieutenant Amey, was killed (in two of the stories in Biggles Learns to Fly observers flying with Biggles are killed or badly wounded) but Johns survived to be taken prisoner of war.. Johns remained with the RAF until 1927, although his final rank was Flying Officer (equivalent to Lieutenant in the RFC) rather than the "Captain" of his pen name..A study of the short stories featuring his World War I exploits, suggests that he claimed at least 32 kills and was shot down or crash-landed eight times..The books were popular and were eventually translated into Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Flemish, German, Hungarian, Icelandic, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish and Swedish...

Vannevar Bush (March 11, 1890 – June 28, 1974) was an American engineer, inventor and science administrator, who during World War II headed the U.S. Office of Scientific Research and Development (OSRD), through which almost all wartime military R&D was carried out, including initiation and early administration of the Manhattan Project..Starting in 1927, Bush constructed a differential analyzer, an analog computer that could solve differential equations with as many as 18 independent variables.. The Radiation Laboratory, as it came to be known, tested its airborne radar from an Army B-18 on March 27, 1941. By mid-1941, it had developed SCR-584 radar, a mobile radar fire control system for antiaircraft guns..Bush played a critical role in persuading the United States government to undertake a crash program to create an atomic bomb..In March 1942, Bush sent a report to Roosevelt outlining work by Robert Oppenheimer on the nuclear cross section of uranium-235.. Roosevelt approved a Military Policy Committee recommendation stating that information given to the British should be limited to technologies that they were actively working on and should not extend to post-war developments..In July 1945, the Kilgore bill was introduced in Congress..From 1947 to 1962, Bush was on the board of directors for American Telephone and Telegraph..Bush was also made a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1948, and an Officer of the French Legion of Honor in 1955..Remember: Your focus determines your reality..I listen to all the traders and star pilots who come through here..All slaves have a transmitter placed somewhere in their body.. Oboe was a British aerial blind bombing targeting system in World War II, based on radio transponder technology..Using triangulation to determine relative location, the system consisted of a pair of radio transmitters on the ground, which sent signals which were received and retransmitted by a transponder in the aircraft..Gee, was the code name given to a radio navigation system used by the Royal Air Force during World War II.. It measured the time delay between two radio signals to produce a "fix", with accuracy on the order of a few hundred meters at ranges up to about 350 miles (560 km)..Radar can also be used as a navigation system.. If two stations are able to communicate, they could compare their measurements of the distance to a target, and use basic triangulation to determine the location...

Pace (center) with the family of Medal of Honor recipient Cornelius H. Charlton in 1952...

On 4 November 1952, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed between US Air Force Secretary Thomas K. Finletter and US Army Secretary Frank Pace that removed the weight restrictions on helicopters that the U.S. Army could use.. It also widened the range of tasks the Army's helicopters could be used for..However, it also created an arbitrary 5,000 pound weight restriction that limits the Army's ability to fly fixed-wing aircraft. As a result, the U.S. Army today is dependent upon the U.S. Air Force to purchase and man fixed-wing ground-attack aircraft to fulfill close air support missions..The previous Agreement of 2 October 1951 that was not able to resolve issues as the 4 November 1952 MOU did..This MOU built upon the Key West Agreement..Finletter was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of Thomas Dickson Finletter and Helen Grill Finletter..Pace was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, and attended The Hill School, Pottstown, Pennsylvania.. In 1933 he graduated from Princeton University, and in 1936 from Harvard Law School..Key West is an island in the Straits of Florida on the North American continent, at the southernmost tip of the Florida Keys...
