United States Navy SEALs

The United States Navy's Sea, Air, Land Teams, commonly known as the Navy SEALs, are the U.S. Navy's principal special operations force and a part of the Naval Special Warfare Command and United States Special Operations Command..The SEALs duty is to conduct small-unit maritime military operations which originate from, and return to a river, ocean, swamp, delta or coastline.. SEALs can negotiate shallow water areas such as the Persian Gulf coastline, where large ships and submarines are limited due to depth.."SEAL" is always capitalized in reference to members of the Naval Special Warfare community.. The Navy SEALs are trained to operate in all environments (Sea, Air, and Land) for which they are named.. SEALs are also prepared to operate in climate extremes of scorching desert, freezing Arctic, and humid jungle..All SEALs are male members of the United States Navy..The CIA's highly secretive Special Activities Division (SAD) and more specifically its elite Special Operations Group (SOG) recruits operators from the SEAL Teams..Joint Navy SEALs and CIA operations go back to the famed MACV-SOG during the Vietnam War..Due to their reputation as one of the world's premier special operations forces, SEAL operators routinely serve in allied SOF's including the British Special Air Service, Special Boat Service and Polish GROM..The first group included Phil H. Bucklew, the "Father of Naval Special Warfare," after whom the Naval Special Warfare Center building is named. Commissioned in October 1942, this group saw combat in November 1942 during Operation Torch on the North African coast.. Scouts and Raiders also supported landings in Sicily, Salerno, Anzio, Normandy, and southern France..A second group of Scouts and Raiders, code-named Special Service Unit No. 1, was established on 7 July 1943, as a joint and combined operations force. The first mission, in September 1943, was at Finschafen on New Guinea.. Later operations were at Gasmata, Arawe, Cape Gloucester, and the East and South coast of New Britain, all without any loss of personnel...

The modern day U.S. Navy SEALs can trace their roots to World War II..The United States Navy recognized the need for the covert reconnaissance of landing beaches and coastal defenses. As a result, the Amphibious Scout and Raider School was established in 1942 at Fort Pierce, Florida.. The Scouts and Raiders were formed in September of that year, just nine months after the attack on Pearl Harbor, from the Observer Group, a joint U.S. Army-Marine-Navy unit..Some of the earliest World War II predecessors of the SEALs were the Operational Swimmers of the Office of Strategic Services, or OSS..Many current SEAL missions were first assigned to them.. OSS specialized in special operations, dropping operatives behind enemy lines to engage in organized guerrilla warfare as well as to gather information on such things as enemy resources and troop movements..President John F. Kennedy, aware of the situation in Southeast Asia, recognized the need for unconventional warfare and special operations as a measure against guerrilla warfare.. In a speech, to Congress, on 25 May 1961, Kennedy spoke of his deep respect for the United States Army Special Forces.. While his announcement of the government's plan to put a man on the moon drew most of the attention, in the same speech he announced his intention to spend over $100 million to strengthen U.S. special operations forces and expand American capabilities in unconventional warfare...

Troop core skills consist of: Sniper, Breacher, Communicator, Maritime/Engineering, Close Air Support, Corpsman, Point-man/Navigator, Primary Driver/Navigator (Rural/Urban/Protective Security), Heavy Weapons Operator, Sensitive Site Exploitation, Air Operations Master, Lead Climber, Lead Diver/Navigator, Interrogator, Explosive Ordnance Disposal, Technical Surveillance, and Advanced Special Operations...

Special Warfare Command

Quote:

The United States Naval Special Warfare Command (NAVSPECWARCOM), also known as NAVSOC or NSWC,was commissioned on April 16, 1987 at Naval Amphibious Base Coronado in San Diego, California.. As the Naval component of United States Special Operations Command; Naval Special Warfare Command provides vision, leadership, doctrinal guidance, resources and oversight to ensure component maritime special operations forces are ready to meet the operational requirements of combatant commanders..

By the time the United States became involved in World War II, Adolf Hitler and the Axis forces had control over a large portion of Europe, Asia and North Africa. If the Allied forces were to stand a chance, there would have to be several full-scale landings.. The U.S. Navy decided that to do the job right required sending in their own.. They needed men to reconnoiter the landing beaches, take note of obstacles and defenses and ultimately guide the landing forces in. Later, during the war, the Army Engineers passed down demolition jobs to the U.S. Navy.. They were to clear any obstacles and/or defenses in the near shore area, beginning a tradition that continues today...

Scout landings were done at night during the new moon.. The men were brought to a lagoon by submarine, and came ashore with rubber paddle boats.. (Goodyear invented inflatable rubber boats just for this purpose) They would bury the boats in the sand and begin recon.. Their mission was to clear the area prior to the main Naval landing which would then take over the island.. They stayed from 3 days to as long as 7 days engaging in covert operations and 'taking no prisoners'.. They had learned martial arts (judo) and were armed with Thompson sub machine guns, sidearms and knives.. The entire Navy Scouts program was strictly volunteer, since it was considered too dangerous to order men to do this job.. When the island was secured, they would transmit code to the sub, which would pick them up the next night.. A typical loss would be 12 men going in and 3-5 coming back alive.. Sometimes only 1 would come back...

The 3rd Scout and Raiders organization deployed to fight with the Sino-American Cooperative Organization (SACO) in China.. Admiral Ernest J. King ordered that 120 officers and 900 enlisted sailors be trained for "Amphibious Raider" at the Scout and Raider school at Fort Pierce, Florida in order to support this mission.. They formed the core of what was envisioned as a "guerrilla amphibious organization of Americans and Chinese operating from coastal waters, lakes and rivers employing small steamboats and sampans"..Elements of the 3rd Scouts and Raiders saw active service conducting surveys of the upper Yangtze River in the spring of 1945 and, disguised as coolies, conducting a detailed 3-month survey of the Chinese coast from Shanghai to Kitchioh Wan, near Hong Kong.. The majority of the force remained garrisoned at Camp Knox in Calcutta, India...

The Special Warfare insignia, also known as the “SEAL Trident” or its more popular nickname, "The Budweiser" is earned after completion of BUD/S and SQT, is one of the most recognizable military badges of the United States Navy..The Underwater Demolition Badge is an obsolete badge of the United States Navy which was first created during the Second World War.. The Underwater Demolition Badge was established as a decoration for members of Navy Underwater Demolition Teams (UDTs) and is considered a predecessor decoration to the modern day Special Warfare Badge..The Underwater Demolition Badge was originally worn as a patch on the upper sleeve of a Navy uniform. The badge was awarded to the members of the U.S. Navy Underwater Demolition Teams and became a breast badge in the 1950s.. As UDTs began to be phased into the Navy SEALs, the Underwater Demolition Badge was used as a template for the new SEAL Badge..The Underwater Demolition Badge appears as a crossed anchor, trident and pistol insignia.. The decoration is identical to the Special Warfare Badge with the exception of the eagle upon which the SEAL badge is based...

The Stranglers - Shah Shah A Go Go The Raven...
Quote:

The operation was conceived by the 2nd Battalion of the 3rd Marine Regiment (2/3) of the U.S. Marine Corps based on an operational model developed by 2/3's sister battalion, the 3rd Battalion of the 3rd Marine Regiment (3/3) which had preceded the 2nd Battalion in their combat deployment.. It utilized special operations forces (SOF) units and assets, including members of the U.S. Navy SEALs and the U.S. Army Special Operations Command's 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) (SOAR(A), for the opening phase of the operation..A team of four Navy SEALs, tasked for surveillance and reconnaissance of a group of structures known to be used by Ahmad Shah and his men, fell into an ambush by Shah and his group just hours after inserting into the area by fastrope from an MH-47 helicopter..Three of the four SEALs were killed and a QRF helicopter sent in for their aid was shot down with a rocket propelled grenade fired from an RPG-7, killing all 8 U.S. Navy SEALs and all 8 U.S. Army Special Operations aviators on board...

Ahmad Shah was from the Kuz Kunar District of Nangarhar Province.. His full name was "Ahmad Shah Dara-I-Nur" meaning "Ahmad Shah of the Valley of the Enlightened Ones"..While he was not part of the Taliban, he sought allegiance with them..He was most closely associated with Gulbadin Hekmatyar..Subsequent to the SEAL ambush and MH-47 shootdown, Shah and his men escaped to Pakistan, where they produced a video from footage they shot of the ambush that included weapons and implements captured from the SEALs..In the fire fight with the 4 SEALs his group had an estimated 35 casualties as a result of a last stand by the 4 SEALs.. In late July 2005, Shah and his men returned to the Kunar Province, and began attacking United States, Coalition, and Government of Afghanistan entities..Ahmad Shah's cell was destroyed during Operation Whalers, which was planned and executed by the 2nd Battalion of the 3rd Marine Regiment..Shah was killed during a shootout with Pakistani police in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, in April 2008, after failing to stop at a security checkpoint whilst transporting a kidnapped trader..Shah reportedly fought against the Taliban and al Qaeda in 2001. He eventually switched sides and later became a facilitator for foreign fighters traversing and operating in the challenging terrain of the northeast...

Late in the night of June 27,2005, two MH-47 Special Operations Aircraft of the Army Special Operations Command's 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) (SOAR(A)) approached Sawtalo Sar.. As one of the aircraft performed a number of "decoy drops" to confuse any possible enemy on the ground as to the specific purpose of helicopters, the other inserted, via fastrope, a four-man Navy SEAL reconnaissance and surveillance team in a saddle between Sawtalo Sar and Gatigal Sar, a peak just to the south of Sawtalo Sar.. The insert point was roughly one and one half miles from the nearest Named Area of Interest..After moving to a pre-determined, covered overwatch position, from which the SEALs could observe the Named Areas of Interest, the team was discovered by local goatherds.. After determining that they were civilians, and not combatants, LT Murphy had them released, according to rules of engagement..The team, surmising that they would likely be compromised, retreated to a fallback position.. Within an hour, the SEAL Reconnaissance and Surveillance team was attacked by Shah and his men who were armed with RPK light machine guns, AK-47s, RPG-7 Rocket Propelled Grenades, and 82mm mortars..The intensity of the incoming fire, combined with the type of attack forced the SEAL team into the northeast gulch of Sawtalo Sar, on the Shuryek Valley side of Sawtalo Sar..The SEALs made a number of attempts to contact their combat operations center with a multi-band radio and then with a satellite phone..The team could not establish consistent communication, other than for a period long enough to indicate that they were under attack..3 of the four team members were killed, and the only survivor, Marcus Luttrell, was left unconscious with a number of fractures and other serious wounds.. He regained consciousness and was rescued by local Pashtun, who ultimately saved his life, as in his condition, without assistance, he would surely have been killed or captured by the Talisman...

The Boeing CH-47 Chinook is an American twin-engine, tandem rotor heavy-lift helicopter. Its primary roles are troop movement, artillery placement and battlefield resupply.. It has a wide loading ramp at the rear of the fuselage and 3 external-cargo hooks.. With a top speed of 170 knots (196 mph, 315 km/h) the helicopter was faster than contemporary 1960s utility and attack helicopters. The CH-47 is among the heaviest lifting Western helicopters.. During the 70's, the United States and Iran had a strong relationship, in which the Iranian armed forces began to use many American military aircraft, most notably the F-14 Tomcat, as part of a modernization program..After an agreement signed between Boeing and Elicotteri Meridionali, the Imperial Iranian Air Force purchased 20 Elicotteri Meridionali-built CH-47Cs in 1971.. The Imperial Iranian Army Aviation purchased 70 CH-47Cs from Elicotteri Meridionali between 72 and 76.. In late 78, Iran placed an order for an additional 50 helicopters with Elicotteri Meridionali, but that order was canceled immediately after the revolution; but 11 of them were delivered after multiple requests by Iran..Despite the arms embargo in place upon Iran, it has managed to keep its Chinook fleet operational..

Pheasant In The Big Shitty - The Stranglers...

The Phasianidae are a family of terrestrial birds which consists of quails, partridges, snowcocks, francolins, spurfowls, tragopans, monals, pheasants, peafowls and jungle fowls. In general, they are plump (although they vary in size) and have broad, relatively short wings.. There are 156 species worldwide and 8 species which occur in Iran..Pheasants are characterised by strong sexual dimorphism, males being highly ornate with bright colours and adornments such as wattles and long tails.. Males are usually larger than females and have longer tails.. Males play a part in rearing the young. Pheasants typically eat seeds and some insects..The best-known is the common pheasant, which is widespread throughout the world in introduced feral populations and in farm operations..The buttonquails are small, drab, running birds which resemble the true quails.. The female is the brighter of the sexes and initiates courtship..The male incubates the eggs and tends the young.. There are 16 species worldwide and 1 species which occurs in Iran..The blood pheasant (Ithaginis cruentus) is the only species in genus Ithaginis of the pheasant family.. This relatively small, short-tailed pheasant is widespread and fairly common in eastern Himalayas, ranging across India, Nepal, Bhutan and China..The green pheasant (Phasianus versicolor) also known as Japanese pheasant, is native to the Japanese Archipelago, to which it is endemic..More generally, the word "peasant" is sometimes used to refer pejoratively to those considered to be "lower class", perhaps defined by poorer education and/or a lower income...

The Peasants' Revolt, also called Wat Tyler's Rebellion or the Great Rising, was a major uprising across large parts of England in 1381.. The revolt had various causes, including the socio-economic and political tensions generated by the Black Death in the 1340s, the high taxes for the poor resulting from the conflict with France during the Hundred Years' War, and instability within the local leadership of London..Odessa is named after the Ukrainian port city of the same name..Odessa was founded in 1881 as a water stop and cattle-shipping point on the Texas and Pacific Railway.. The first post office opened in 1885..In 2013, Odessa had the highest rate of violent crime in Texas, with 806.4 crimes per 100,000 inhabitants..Odessa Meteor Crater, an impact crater 550 feet (170 m) in diameter, is located southwest of the city..Odessa has a Stonehenge replica on the campus of the University of Texas of the Permian Basin..This is one of 3 impact crater sites found in Texas, the others being the older and much larger Sierra Madera crater and the Marquez crater..The United States Postal Service operates 3 post offices, Odessa, Northeast Odessa, and West Odessa in Odessa..A hare less than one year old is called a leveret.. The collective noun for a group of hares is a "drove"...

A sniper is a highly trained marksman who operates alone, in a pair, or with a sniper team to maintain close visual contact with the enemy and engage targets from concealed positions or distances exceeding the detection capabilities of enemy personnel.. These sniper teams operate independently, with little combat asset support from their parent units.. Snipers typically have highly selective and specialized training and use high-precision/special application rifles and optics, and often have sophisticated communication assets to feed valuable combat information back to their units..In addition to marksmanship and long range shooting, military snipers are trained in camouflage, field craft, infiltration, special Reconnaissance and observation, surveillance and target acquisition...

http://i1278.photobucket.com/albums/...psjfj3fsd3.png

The verb "to snipe" originated in the 1770s among soldiers in British India where a hunter skilled enough to kill the elusive snipe was dubbed a "sniper"..The term sniper was first attested in 1824 in the sense of the word "sharpshooter"..Another term, "sharp shooter" was in use in British newspapers as early as 1801. In the Edinburgh Advertiser, 23 June 1801, can be found the following quote in a piece about the North British Militia; "This Regiment has several Field Pieces, and two companies of Sharp Shooters, which are very necessary in the modern Stile of War"..Different countries use different military doctrines regarding snipers in military units, settings, and tactics...

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...niper_team.jpg
British Army sniper team..The longest confirmed sniper kill in combat was achieved by Craig Harrison, a Corporal of Horse in the Blues & Royals RHG/D of the British Army...

Military snipers from the US, UK, and other countries that adopt their military doctrine are typically deployed in two-man sniper teams consisting of a shooter and spotter..A common practice is for a shooter and a spotter to take turns in order to avoid eye fatigue..Soviet Russian and derived military doctrines include squad-level snipers.. Snipers have increasingly been demonstrated as being useful by US and UK forces in the recent Iraq campaign in a fire support role to cover the movement of infantry, especially in urban areas..Early forms of sniping, or marksmanship were used during the American Revolutionary War.. For instance, in 1777 at the battle of Saratoga the Colonists hid in the trees and used early model rifles to shoot British officers..Most notably, Timothy Murphy shot and killed General Simon Fraser of Balnain on 7 October 1777 at a distance of about 400 yards..During the interbellum, most nations dropped their specialized sniper units, notably the Germans..Snipers reappeared as important factors on the battlefield from the first campaign of World War II..In the Pacific War, the Empire of Japan trained snipers.. In the jungles of Asia and the Pacific Islands, snipers posed a serious threat to the U.S, British, and Commonwealth troops..Law enforcement snipers, commonly called police snipers, and military snipers differ in many ways, including their areas of operation and tactics...

Military sniper training aims to teach a high degree of proficiency in camouflage and concealment, stalking, observation and map reading as well as precision marksmanship under various operational conditions.. Trainees typically shoot thousands of rounds over a number of weeks, while learning these core skills..A sandbag can serve as a useful platform for shooting a sniper rifle, although any soft surface such as a rucksack will steady a rifle and contribute to consistency..Servicemen volunteer for the rigorous sniper training and are accepted on the basis of their aptitude, physical ability, marksmanship, patience and mental stability..The term "hide site" refers to a covered and concealed position from which a sniper and his team can conduct surveillance and/or fire at targets.. A good hide conceals and camouflages the sniper effectively, provides cover from enemy fire and allows a wide view of the surrounding area..Many snipers use ghillie suits to hide and stay hidden. Ghillie suits vary according to the terrain into which the sniper wishes to blend..The ghillie suit was developed by Scottish gamekeepers as a portable hunting blind.. Lovat Scouts, a Scottish Highland regiment formed by the British Army during the Second Boer War, is the first known military unit to use ghillie suits...

As sniper rifles are often extremely powerful and consequently loud, it is common for snipers to use a technique known as sound masking.. When employed by a highly skilled marksman, this tactic can be used as a substitute for a noise suppressor.. Very loud sounds in the environment, such as artillery shells air bursting or claps of thunder, can often mask the sound of the shot.. This technique is frequently used in clandestine operations, infiltration tactics, and guerrilla warfare..Historically, units that suffered heavy and continual casualties from urban sniper fire and were frustrated by their inability to strike back effectively often have become enraged.. Such units may overreact and violate the laws of land warfare concerning the treatment of captured snipers..The negative reputation of snipers can be traced back to the American Revolution, when American "Marksmen" would intentionally target British officers..The occurrence of sniper warfare has led to the evolution of many counter-sniper tactics in modern military strategies..In meteorology, haar is a coastal fog.. Haar is typically formed over the sea and is brought to land by wind advection..The term haar is used along certain lands bordering the North Sea, primarily eastern Scotland and the north-east of England...

Ford-class aircraft carriers..Instead of the gas turbines or diesel-electric systems used for propulsion on many modern warships, the carriers use two A4W pressurized water reactors which drive 4 propeller shafts and can produce a maximum speed of over 30 knots (56 km/h) and maximum power of around 260,000 shp (190 MW).. As a result of the use of nuclear power, the ships are capable of operating for over 20 years without refueling and are predicted to have a service life of over 50 years.. They are categorized as nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and are numbered with consecutive hull numbers between CVN-68 and CVN-77..USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77) is the 10th and final Nimitz-class supercarrier of the United States Navy..She is named for the 41st President of the United States and former Director of Central Intelligence George H. W. Bush, who was a naval aviator during World War II.. Bush 's callsign is Avenger..

Pressurized water reactors (PWRs) constitute the large majority of all Western nuclear power plants and are one of three types of light water reactor (LWR), the other types being boiling water reactors (BWRs) and supercritical water reactors (SCWRs). In a PWR, the primary coolant (water) is pumped under high pressure to the reactor core where it is heated by the energy generated by the fission of atoms..These nuclear fission pressurized water reactors (PWRs) were jointly designed by Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory and Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory and built by Westinghouse Electric Company..On May 15, 1946, KAPL began with a contract between General Electric and the U.S. Government to conduct nuclear research and development, including the generation of electricity from nuclear energy.. In 1950, the nuclear power plant project was converted to a Naval Nuclear Propulsion project.. Several years later Knolls' work joined that of Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, the Argonne National Laboratory, and others in developing the world's first nuclear-powered submarine, the USS Nautilus on January 21, 1954..The previous operating contractor of KAPL was Lockheed Martin.. KAPL's original contractor was General Electric.. KAPL was one of the first laboratories to conduct research on obtaining usable power from nuclear reactors...KAPL has one computer listed on the TOP500 list of supercomputers in the world..The laboratory is also home to the U.S. Navy's Bettis Reactor Engineering School.. The school provides a post-graduate certificate program in Nuclear Engineering with a focus on nuclear reactor design, construction, and operations.. It is open only to Naval personnel and Bettis engineers..Refueling and Overhaul (ROH) refers to a lengthy process or procedure performed on nuclear-powered Naval ships, which involves replacement of expended nuclear fuel with new fuel and a general maintenance fix-up, renovation, and often modernization of the entire ship...

All 10 Nimitz-class aircraft carriers were constructed between 1968 and 2006 at Newport News Shipbuilding Company, in Newport News, Virginia, in the largest drydock in the western hemisphere, dry dock 12, now 2,172 feet (662 m) long after a recent expansion..Since USS Theodore Roosevelt, the carriers were manufactured in modular construction (USS George H.W. Bush was constructed from 161 'super-lift' modules)..The total cost of construction for each ship was around $4.5 billion..While the designs of the final se7en ships (beginning with USS Theodore Roosevelt) are slightly different from those of the earlier ships, the U.S. Navy considers all ten carriers as a single class..To lower costs, some new technologies and design features were also incorporated into USS Ronald Reagan, the previous carrier, including a redesigned island..One of the first major operations in which the ships were involved was Operation Eagle Claw launched by USS Nimitz in 1980 after she had deployed to the Indian Ocean in response to the taking of hostages in the U.S. embassy in Tehran..The two most significant deployments the Nimitz class was involved in during the 1990s were the Gulf War and its aftermath, and Operation Southern Watch in southern Iraq.. All active vessels were engaged in both of these to some extent, with Operation Southern Watch continuing until 2003..Harry S. Truman's maiden deployment was in November 2000.. The carrier's air wing flew 869 combat sorties in support of Operation Southern Watch, including a strike on Iraqi air defense sites on 16 February 2001, in response to Iraqi surface-to-air missile fire against United Nations coalition forces..

After the 11 September attacks, Carl Vinson and Theodore Roosevelt were among the first warships to participate in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.. Carl Vinson sailed towards the Persian Gulf intending to support Operation Southern Watch in July 2001. This changed in response to the attacks, and the ship changed course to travel towards the North Arabian Sea, where she launched the first airstrikes in support of the operation on 7 October 2001..Following the attacks, John C. Stennis and George Washington participated in Operation Noble Eagle, carrying out homeland security operations off the West Coast of the United States..The carriers have also provided aid after natural disasters; in 2005, Abraham Lincoln supported Operation Unified Assistance in Indonesia after the December 2004 tsunami, and Truman provided aid after Hurricane Katrina..The Reagan Carrier Strike Group performed humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations in the Philippines after Typhoon Fengshen..Vinson operated off Haiti, providing aid and drinking water to EQ survivors as part of the U.S. led Operation Unified Response, alongside other major warships and hospital ship Comfort...USS Nimitz and other Nimitz class carriers are near Syria..Nimitz-class carriers were designed to have a 50-year service life.. At the end of the service life, ships will be decommissioned..The new carriers will have a similar design to George H.W. Bush (using an almost identical hull shape) and technological and structural improvements..

Missouri was ordered in 1940 and commissioned in June 1944..After trials off New York and shakedown and battle practice in the Chesapeake Bay, Missouri departed Norfolk, Virginia on 11 November 1944, transited the Panama Canal on 18 November and steamed to San Francisco for final fitting out as fleet flagship.. In the Pacific Theater of World War II she fought in the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa and shelled the Japanese home islands, and she fought in the Korean War from 1950 to 1953..She returned to Norfolk on 3 August and departed on 23 August for inactivation on the West Coast.. She was decommissioned in 55 into the United States Navy reserve fleets (the "Mothball Fleet")..A small cottage industry grew in the civilian community just outside the gates, selling souvenirs and other memorabilia.. Nearly 30 years passed before Missouri reactivated and modernized in 84 as part of the 600-ship Navy plan, and provided fire support during Operation Desert Storm in January/February 91... Missouri commissioned on 11 June with Captain William Callaghan in command received a total of 11 battle stars for service in World War II, Korea, and the Persian Gulf, and was finally decommissioned on 31 March 92, but remained on the Naval Vessel Register until her name was struck in January 95.. In 98, she was donated to the USS Missouri Memorial Association and became a museum ship at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii..The 16"/50 caliber Mark 7 – United States Naval Gun was the main armament of the Iowa-class battleships...

The Battle of Lima Site 85, also called Battle of Phou Pha Thi, was fought as part of a military campaign waged during the Vietnam War and Laotian Civil War by the Vietnam People’s Army (VPA) (then known as NVA) and the Pathet Lao, against airmen of the United States Air Force 1st Combat Evaluation Group, elements of the Royal Laos Army, Royal Thai Border Patrol Police, and the Central Intelligence Agency-led Hmong Clandestine Army.. The battle was fought on Phou Pha Thi mountain in Houaphanh Province, Laos, on 10 March 1968, and derives its name from the mountaintop where it was fought or from the designation of a 700 feet (210 m) landing strip in the valley below, and was the largest single ground combat loss of United States Air Force members during the Vietnam War..Towards the end of 67, North Vietnamese units increased the tempo of their operations around Phou Pha Thi, and by 68 several attacks were launched against Lima Site 85.. In the final assault on 10 March 68, elements of the VPA 41st Special Forces Battalion attacked the facility, with support from the VPA 766th Regiment and one Pathet Lao battalion.. The Hmong and Thai forces that were defending the facility were overwhelmed by the combined North Vietnamese and Pathet Lao forces...

"An Air Combat First" – CIA painting of Air America helicopter engaging 2 VPAF An-2 biplanes..

On 18 February 1968, a North Vietnamese artillery survey team was ambushed near Lima Site 85 by Hmong reconnaissance teams, killing a North Vietnamese officer in the process.. The dead officer, who was a major, carried a notebook which revealed a plan to attack Phou Pha Thi by using three North Vietnamese battalions and one Pathet Lao battalion..Consequently, U.S. personnel at Lima Site 85 directed 342 air strikes within 30 meters (98 ft) of their own facility to disrupt their opponent's build-up during 20–29 February.. Unknown to the USAF, however, the Vietnam People’s Army had also drawn up a plan to capture Lima Site 85 by deploying its Special Forces. The task of capturing the U.S. facility was entrusted to a platoon from the VPA 41st Special Forces Battalion, led by First LT Truong Muc.. The platoon numbered 33 soldiers, and they were reinforced by a nine-man sapper squad and a communications and cryptography squad..Prior to the mission, Muc's soldiers had undergone nine months of special training, mainly focused on mountain fighting techniques and jungle operations..

To capture Lima Site 85, the North Vietnamese Special Forces were equipped with 3 Chinese-made K-54 pistols, 23 AK-47 assault rifles, four 7.62mm carbines and 3 RPG-7 rocket propelled grenade launchers..They carried 200 rounds of ammunition for each AK-47 rifle, 6 rounds for each RPG, 400 grams (14 oz) of explosives, and 6 hand grenades.. The weapons load, in addition to 15 days of rations and other personal items, required each North Vietnamese Special Force soldier to pack between 42 kilograms (93 lb) to 45 kilograms (99 lb)..Shortly after the North Vietnamese Special Forces arrived at the assembly point, they moved off to an undisclosed location for two days to test-fire all their weapons, and to ensure their explosives were in good working order.. On 9 March, elements of the VPA 41st Special Forces Battalion arrived in the vicinity of Phou Pha Thi, where they made final preparations for their assault...

Just before midday on 11 March, the USAF turned their attention from looking for their missing personnel to that of destroying the captured radar, along with all the documentation and operation information left behind at Lima Site 85.. Between 12–18 March, the USAF conducted a total of 95 strike sorties against the radar site, and on 19 March an A-1 fighter-bomber destroyed every building at the old facility. In addition to the destruction of their radar equipment, the USAF bombing of Lima Site 85 may also had the effect of obliterating the bodies of U.S. personnel left behind at the site..For the USAF, the loss at Phou Pha Thi was not a result of intelligence failure, because it had been provided with accurate information from the very start.. Instead, it was clearly a failure of command and control, as the U.S. personnel and their Hmong allies were not permitted to freely organize their own defense to hold the radar facility..The Battle of Lima Site 85 resulted in the largest ground combat loss of USAF personnel during the Vietnam War..A total of 12 U.S. personnel were missing or killed in the fighting on Phou Pha Thi; 11 were killed or missing on the ground and one was shot dead during the evacuation.. The single fatality occurring during the evacuation was Air Force Chief Master Sergeant Richard Etchberger who was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously in September 2010 for his role in helping 4 injured airmen into the evacuation helicopter lift sling..The total casualty figures for North Vietnamese, Pathet Lao, Hmong, and Thai units are unknown. According to official Vietnamese history, the VPA 41st Special Forces Battalion lost one soldier killed and two wounded in their fight for Lima Site 85. Against those losses, the Vietnamese claimed a total of 42 Hmong and Thai soldiers were killed, and a number of others were wounded...

11 of the twelve USAF personnel lost on the day of the battle were listed first as missing in action (MIA), then later as KIA/body not recovered.. Between 1994 and 2004, 11 investigations were conducted by both Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC) and unilaterally by Lao and Vietnamese investigators on both sides of the border.. In 2002 two of the former VPA soldiers who had taken part in the attack told investigators that they threw the bodies of the Americans off the mountain after the attack as they were unable to bury them on the rocky surface..A memorial to the USAF airmen killed and missing at Lima Site 85 and other Combat SkySpot airmen is co-located on Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, with the memorial to Operation Arc Light airmen...

Her husband was shot dead at a shooting range in Texas in February 2013..After his death, Taya has spoken on behalf of her husband at numerous functions, appearing on outlets like CNN. She is an advocate for women and families who have lost family members while serving in the war..She created the Chris Kyle Frog Foundation (The skeleton of a frog is the symbol for a fallen Navy SEAL) whose mission is to "serve those who serve us by providing meaningful interactive experiences that enrich family relationships"..

American Sniper - Official Trailer 2 [HD]..

Assigned to SEAL Team 3, sniper element, platoon "Charlie" (later "Cadillac"), within the Naval Special Warfare Command, and with four tours of duty, Kyle served in many major battles of the Iraq War.. His first long-range kill shot was taken during the initial invasion when he shot a woman approaching a group of Marines while carrying a hand grenade.. An article by CNN reported that the woman was cradling a toddler in her other hand.. As ordered, he opened fire, killing the woman before she could attack.. He later stated, "the woman was already dead. I was just making sure she didn't take any Marines with her"..Because of his track record as a marksman during his deployment to Ramadi, the insurgents named him Shaitan Ar-Ramadi ('The Devil of Ramadi'), and put a $21,000 bounty on his head that was later increased to $80,000.. They posted signs highlighting the cross on his arm as a means of identifying him.. In 2008, outside Sadr City, Kyle reportedly made his longest successful shot after spotting an insurgent who was about to fire a grenade at the U.S. Army convoy.. Kyle stated that he fired one shot from his McMillan Tac-338 sniper rifle from about 2,100 yards (1,920 m) away, killing the insurgent..He became known by the moniker "Legend" among the general infantry and Marines whom he was tasked to protect.. This title initially originated in jest among fellow SEALs following his taking of a sabbatical to train other snipers in Fallujah..

In interviews on The Opie and Anthony Show in January 2012, Kyle claimed to have punched former Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura at a bar in Coronado, California, in 2006 during a wake for Mike Monsoor, a U.S. Navy SEAL and Medal of Honor recipient killed in Iraq..The story parallels an incident in his book which does not mention Ventura by name, and claims a character named "Scruff Face" said that the SEALs "deserved to lose a few guys.".. Ventura filed a lawsuit against Kyle for defamation in January 2012.. After Kyle was killed the following year Ventura continued the lawsuit against Kyle's estate.. The court found that the Kyle estate was unjustly enriched and awarded Ventura $1.8 million in damages.. Kyle's widow is appealing the verdict on behalf of Kyle's estate..

Poison dart frogs are an example of an aposematic organism.. Their bright coloration advertises unpalatability to potential predators..The golden poison frog's skin is densely coated in an alkaloid toxin, one of a number of poisons common to dart frogs (batrachotoxins).. This poison prevents its victim's nerves from transmitting impulses, leaving the muscles in an inactive state of contraction.. This can lead to heart failure or fibrillation. Some native people use this poison to hunt by coating darts with the frog's poison..Illumination should be arranged to brightly illuminate the dartboard and minimize shadows of thrown darts..The main supply for the illumination should be protected against accidental piercing, or placed away from the board.. Modern science has evolved toxicology, a special knowledge of poisons, but the "cantarella" of the Borgia Pope has baffled even the experts in toxicology..In The Borgias, a Showtime original program, cantarella poison was frequently used..Blister beetles are beetles (Coleoptera) of the family Meloidae, so called for their defensive secretion of a blistering agent, cantharidin...

Avalon (Welsh: Ynys Afallon; probably from afal, meaning "apple") is a legendary island featured in the Arthurian legend.. It first appears in Geoffrey of Monmouth's 1136 pseudohistorical account Historia Regum Britanniae ("The History of the Kings of Britain") as the place where King Arthur's sword Excalibur was forged and later where Arthur was taken to recover from his wounds after the Battle of Camlann.. Avalon was AssoCIAted from an early date with mystical practices and people such as Morgan le Fay...

Avalon is located on Santa Catalina Island, approximately 22 miles (35 km) south-by-southwest of the Los Angeles Harbor breakwater.. It is the only incorporated city to be located on one of the 8 Channel Islands of California..The United States Postal Service Avalon Post Office is located at 118 Metropole Street..The first owner to try to develop Avalon Bay into a resort destination was George Shatto, a real estate speculator from Grand Rapids, Michigan..Chewing gum magnate William Wrigley, Jr. bought a controlling interest in Santa Catalina Island..In May 2007, a fire ripped through 4,750 acres (19.2 km2) of land just outside of Avalon's city limits.. Over 200 firefighting recruits were brought over by U.S. Marine hovercraft and helicopter to protect the city.. Ultimately, only one residence and 6 commercial structures were destroyed..In February 2011, water regulators cited the city for letting tens of thousands of gallons of sewage reach the ocean in 6 spills since 2005..The City of Avalon is oriented around Avalon Bay, with the harbour and beaches forming the center of the town's activity..The main method of transportation within the city is by small gasoline or electric powered motorcars referred to as "autoettes"..

Anglo-American civilization in Newport grew substantially when in 1870 a 105-ton steamer named The Vaquero, captained by Captain Samuel S. Dunnells, against warnings posted by surveyors, safely steered through the lower and upper bay of Newport where it unloaded its cargo.. James Irvine, after hearing the astonishing news, quickly traveled from his home in San Francisco to the San Joaquin Ranch..China House was a distinctive pink home located in Newport Beach, California.. It was built in 1927 by a Pasadena, California resident whose wife loved Chinese architecture and culture..The bright pink home was for many a landmark to mariners upon making entrance to the Newport harbor.. The home was built using elaborate scrolling and curved Chinese architecture that was based on the belief that evil spirits could hide in straight lines !..Evil spirits are also traditionally believed to travel in straight lines, which explains many curvy roads throughout China..The China House was demolished in the 80's...

The most important channel is the central one called 'central channel', which runs in a straight line from the crown of our head down to an area in front of our spine, and along several focal points known as Chakras, or energy wheels .. Each one serves a different function in the practice of Tantra.. The most important Chakra is the one located at the level of the heart, because the heart Chakra is the home of our very subtle mind, This very subtle mind has been with us from conception, for lifetimes without beginning.. As the fundamental consciousness abiding at our heart center throughout this life, the very subtle mind is sometimes referred to as our Residential Mind.. It is actually our original, fundamental Nature, which can only be realized upon awakening...

Human beings born into this world cannot choose the kind of body they would like to have. There are creative forces belonging to each, which are responsible for the variety and diversity of human types, thus making some of them good-looking and others displeasing to the sight.. Those who are good-looking can, like brilliant flowers, do better than those displeasing to the sight in attracting the eyes of the passer-by, but that is all they can do as far as ‘skin-deep’ beauty is concerned..A fragrant flower, though of dull hue, emanates more charm and deserves deeper admiration than a brightly hued type, which possesses nothing but superficial attractiveness.. If it gives out an offensive smell, it is more than worthless in spite of its beauty.. The same is true in the world of human beings wherein a virtuous person, however unsightly, is more worthy of respect than one without any virtue, who, although good-looking, is good-for-nothing..Of course, a man is very likely to choose a line of action that he has followed before, but with training and discipline the mind can be made less wavering and more stable.. It is for this purpose that a system of mind control and self-mastery is laid down..The first step is called Precepts, by which a code of moral conduct is laid down as the basis and framework during the elementary stage of the course.. This, like a ruler for drawing a straight line, prevents us from sidestepping the right path and urges them on straight to the goal.. With this elementary stage well established the rest is sure to be won sooner or later...

Newport (Welsh: Casnewydd) is a cathedral and university city and unitary authority area in south east Wales..Newport has been a port since medieval times, when a castle was built by the Normans..Compared to many Welsh towns, Newport's economy had a broad base, with foundries, engineering works, a cattle market and shops that served much of Monmouthshire..The post-war years saw renewed prosperity, with Saint Woolos Cathedral (now Newport Cathedral) attaining full cathedral status in 1949, the opening of the modern integrated Llanwern steelworks in 1962, and the construction of the Severn Bridge and local sections of the M4 motorway in the late 1960s, making Newport the best-connected place in Wales.. A flourishing local music scene in the early 1990s led to claims that the town was "a new Seattle"..The county borough of Newport was granted city status in 2002 to mark Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee..The city is historically industrialised with a large working-class population..The Great Western main railway line also passes through the heart of the city, stopping at Newport railway station..Additionally junction 23A lies just outside the city boundaries and provides local access..Newport railway station underwent a £22 million refurbishment programme, completed in time for the Ryder Cup in October 2010..Newport has nine public bridges spanning the River Usk, connecting the east and west of the city..Newport has several internet radio stations, the most popular of which is Newport City Radio..Newport has 3 international twinning- Heidenheim, Germany, since 1980 - Kutaisi, Georgia, since 1989-Guangxi Province, China, since 1996..Newport Civic Centre is the seat of government for the city of Newport, South Wales and is a Grade II* Listed building in the Art Deco style..

The straight distance between Bridgend (Wales) and Newport (Wales)is 25.5259 mi, but the driving distance is 28.58 mi..It takes 36 mins to go from Bridgend to Newport..An article in People magazine reported that by February 2012 seventy-nine people had committed suicide by hanging.. Most of the victims are young adults, but the age range is 13 to 41 years of age.. In 2010 police asked the media to stop covering the suiCIDes in an attempt to prevent copy-cats..Madeleine Moon, MP for Bridgend said that the media were "now part of the problem"..Many of the victims were Teenagers between the ages of 13 to 17...

Amphibious warfare is a type of offensive military operation that uses naval ships to project ground and air power onto a hostile or potentially hostile shore at a so-called landing beach.. Through history the operations were conducted using ship's boats as the primary method of delivering troops to shore. Since the Gallipoli Campaign specialised watercraft were increasingly designed for landing troops, materiel and vehicles, including by landing craft and for insertion of commandos, by fast patrol boats, zodiacs (rigid inflatable boats) and from mini-submersibles..The term amphibious first emerged in the USA during the 1930s after design of the Landing Vehicle Tracked where the first prototypes were named Alligator and Crocodile, though neither species are amphibian..The word "Amphibian" is derived from the Ancient Greek term ἀμφίβιος (amphíbios), which means "both kinds of life", ἀμφί meaning "of both kinds" and βιος meaning "life".. The term was initially used as a general adjective for animals that could live on land or in water, including seals and otters.. Traditionally, the class Amphibia includes all tetrapod vertebrates that are not amniotes. Amphibia in its widest sense (sensu lato) was divided into 3 subclasses, 2 of which are extinct..Recorded amphibious warfare goes back to ancient times.. The Sea Peoples menaced the Egyptians from the reign of Akhenaten as captured on the reliefs at Medinet Habu and Karnak...

The intent of operational landings is usually to exploit the shore as a vulnerability in the enemy's overall position, forcing redeployment of forces, premature use of reserves, and aiding a larger allied offensive effort elsewhere.. Such an operation requiring weeks to months of preparation and planning, would use multiple task forces, or even a naval fleet to land corps-size forces, including on large islands, for example Operation Chromite..A strategic landing operation requires a major commitment of forces to invade a national territory in the archipelagic, e.g. the Battle of Leyte, or continental, e.g. Operation Neptune invasion. Such an operation may require multiple naval and air fleets to support the landings, and extensive intelligence gathering and planning of over a year..By their nature amphibious assaults are highly complex operations involving the coordination of disparate elements and are therefore prone to disastrous results if not properly planned..World War I marked the beginning of the first modern amphibious warfare operations. However, tactics and equipment were still rudimentary and required much improvisation..The first large scale amphibious operations, ones that were to heavily influence theorists in the decades to come, were conducted as part of the Battle of Gallipoli in 1915 against the Ottoman Empire during World War I..During the inter-war period, the combination of the negative experience at Gallipoli and economic stringency contributed to the delay in procuring equipment and adopting a universal doctrine for amphibious operations in the Royal Navy...

Gottlieb (German for "God's Love"; Wolfgang Gottlieb Mozart, a variant of Mozart's name used by his father) is a German name that may be used as a surname or as a male given name..Gottlieb (formerly D. In contrast to the British attitude, the U.S. military, especially the Marine Corps remained enthusiastic at the possibilities of amphibious warfare.. The Marines Corps was searching for an expanded mission after World War I, during which it had merely been used as a junior version of the Army infantry...The first major and successful amphibious operation was Operation Ironclad, a British campaign to capture Vichy French-controlled Madagascar. The naval contingent consisted of over 50 vessels, drawn from Force H, the British Home Fleet and the British Eastern Fleet, commanded by Rear Admiral Edward Neville Syfret..In the run up to WWII, many specialized landing craft, both for infantry and vehicles, were developed.. In November 1938, the Inter-Service Training and Development Centre proposed a new type of landing craft..J. S. White of Cowes built a prototype to the Fleming design..8 weeks later the craft was doing trials on the Clyde..Although the Royal Navy had the Landing Craft Mechanised at its disposal, in 1940, Prime Minister Winston Churchill demanded an amphibious vessel capable of landing at least three 36-ton heavy tanks directly onto a beach, able to sustain itself at sea for at least a week, and inexpensive and easy to build..When the United States entered the war in December 1941, the U.S. Navy had no amphibious vessels at all, and found itself obliged to consider British designs already in existence..A further development was the Landing Ship, Tank designation, built to support amphibious operations by carrying significant quantities of vehicles, cargo, and landing troops directly onto an unimproved shore..The most famous amphibious assault of the War, and of all time, was the Normandy landings on 6 June 1944, in which British, Canadian, and US forces were landed at Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword beaches in the largest amphibious operation in history...

In 1964, in the months following World War III, the conflict has devastated the northern hemisphere, polluting the atmosphere with nuclear fallout, killing all life there. Air currents are slowly carrying the fallout south; the only areas still habitable are in the far reaches of the southern hemisphere..From Australia, survivors detect an incomprehensible Morse code signal coming from the west coast of the United States.. The last American nuclear submarine, USS Sawfish, under Royal Australian Navy command, is ordered to sail north to the U. S. to attempt to make contact with the sender of the Morse signal.. The submarine is commanded by Captain Dwight Towers , who must leave his new friend, the alcoholic Moira Davidson...

The Force Reconnaissance companies (FORECON), also known as Force Recon, (0358) are one of the United States Marine Corps's special operations capable forces (SOC) that provide essential elements of military intelligence to the command element of the Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF); supporting their task force commanders, and their subordinate operating units of the Fleet Marine Force (FMF)..Two different mission types emerged during the Vietnam War, which are still implemented in the Force Reconnaissance motives today: Key Hole and Sting Ray.. These practices subsequently became contemporary as "deep reconnaissance", or green operations; and "direct action", which are known as black operations..Key Hole patrols were designed purely around reconnaissance and surveillance; usually lightly equipped and armed with defensive weapons—evasive techniques were employed to break contact from the enemy should the need arise, avoiding contact with the enemy was paramount.. Sting Ray operations were the exact opposite of Key Hole missions with goals more closely in line of offensive strikes, the FORECON operators were heavily armed and used artillery and/or naval gunfire support, if available...

A 4-man team of Marines simulate in infiltrating a beachhead to gain information about the enemy mine and its adjacent beaches to help forecast a 'ship-to-shore' landing operation..

The principal mission of Force Recon is reconnaissance, to collect any pertinent intelligence of military importance, observe, identify and report adversaries to MAGTF commanders.. Like Division Recon (also known as the Marine Recon Battalions), they employ a mixed element of amphibious reconnaissance and ground reconnaissance. These missions are known as green operations.. This practice fundamentally covers a wide spectrum of reconnaissance but primarily the FORECON operators conduct deep reconnaissance..They operate at such great distances that they are beyond the boundaries, or fan, of any artillery and/or naval gunfire support (NGFS); unlike their Division Recon brethren, whose operations are primarily within the artillery and gunfire support fan.. Silence and stealth are vital in reducing chances of compromising their position—if a single round is fired, the mission is deemed to have failed...

Force Recon will train with other Special Operations forces, such as, United States Navy SEALs, United States Army Special Forces, and United States Air Force Pararescue, in order to master all skill sets.. The Marine Corps has seen fit to train versatile specialists rather than specialists in individual areas of combat..Black operations are the missions that require direct action (DA).. They are the opposite of green operations missions, where the Force Recon operators basically "look for trouble".. Depending on the situation and the target location, the FORECON operators usually conduct direct action missions within the artillery and naval gun support fan; these operations demonstrate "small-scale" shock and awe..Each Force Reconnaissance company is basically the same, they all contain its command element and Force Recon platoons.. Each company is in command by a company commander and his executive officer..The historical roots of 'Force Recon' companies can be traced back to the antecedent Amphibious Reconnaissance Battalion, whose numerous pre-D–Day reconnoitering of enemy beaches during the Pacific campaigns of World War II proved the vitality of the Fleet Marine Force's amphibious reconnaissance doctrine.. This unique unit reported directly to the landing force commander, which exercised his availability of receiving important intelligence at his disposal..Formed initially as a company-size element from the Observer Group, under the command of Major James L. Jones, they were amongst the first—along with the early Navy Combat Demolition Units (the predecessor to the Underwater Demolition Teams [i.e., the Navy SEALs])—to embark from submarines; most of their missions complemented those of the NCDU and the UDT.. The 'amphibious reconnaissance' doctrine clearly outlined that the recon Marines duties consisted of scouting the littoral areas, or beachhead, to inland; to test the soil permeability of a possible beach landing, or to clear any obstacles that may hinder an amphibious assault, and to observe any sign of enemy activity.. The Navy UDT were tasked to provide the same, but from off the coastline to the littoral, or adjacent beach areas...

The traditional Roman fasces consisted of a bundle of birch rods, tied together with a red leather ribbon into a cylinder, and often including a bronze axe (or sometimes two) amongst the rods, with the blade(s) on the side, projecting from the bundle. They were carried by the lictors who accompanied the magistrates. The axe often represents the power over life or death through the death penalty, although after the laws of the twelve tables, no Roman magistrate could summarily execute a Roman citizen...

Numerous governments and other authorities have used the image of the fasces for a symbol of power since the end of the Roman Empire. It has also been used to hearken back to the Roman republic, particularly by those who see themselves as modern-day successors to the old republic and/or its ideals. Italian Fascism, which derives its name from the fasces, arguably used this symbolism the most in the 20th century. The British Union of Fascists also used it in the 1930s. However, the fasces, as a widespread and long-established symbol in the West, has avoided the stigma associated with much of fascist symbolism, and many authorities continue to display them, including the federal government of the United States..

The original symbol of fascism, in Italy under Benito Mussolini, was the fasces. This is an ancient Roman symbol of power carried by lictors in front of magistrates; a bundle of sticks featuring an axe, indicating the power over life and death...
