favorite classic football players (retired)

This is a list of my favorite classic footie players who are currently retired from the game...

(Please note this is a list of my personal favorites, and is not meant to be an objective ranking)

1. George Best

Just because he didn't play for long, doesn't mean he wasn't the best when he was playing, which he was,

2. Johan Cruyff

A truly magical player, would've been my favorite if Best never lived,

3. Eric Cantona

Cantona's heading accuracy: 100%,

4. Edson Arantes do Nascimento (Pele)

Magnificent player, just over-hyped and he sold-out quite heavily,

5. Zinedine Zidane

I know he headbutted another player but he's still the greatest attacking-midfielder of all time,

6. Franz Beckenbauer

Best defensive-mid ever,

One of the most consistent footie players to ever live,

Who is your favorite classic football player?

cosmicpurpose1.618 05-09-2017 05:29 AM

I love old-school football.

Everything about it was better.

A goalkeeper's job is getting more and more difficult with the invention of soccer balls that fly faster and harder, much more easily than the leather ball back in the day.

The only thing is that the general level of fitness is probably a lot higher now than back then.

Chain smokers could be pro-footballers back then because you didn't have to run as much as the players do now.

Other than that, the game seemed to have more of a flow, and the players had more finesse, not to mention respect for each other.

rosomak 05-09-2017 07:32 AM

Henrik Larsson.
Jimmy Johnstone.
Lubo Moravcik.
Kenny Dalglish
Paul McStay.
John Robertson.
Aye and what's with the boots? The fellas look like they're away to play my little pony or something, nae a serious game o' fitba.
The over tattooing needs addressing too.
We need to bring back the early "reducer" too.

No Maradona in your top 10 cosmic p ?
Whats he done to piss you off :D

Cant fault your top 10 though all quality players
As well as Maradona, Gazza and georghe Hagi would have to be in that list somewhere as well maybe not in the top 10 though :)

Can't argue with any of those mentioned so far. In more recent years I'd have to say Mark Hughes. You always felt he was going to do something special when he was playing.

Oh I forgot about Hagi, he was amazing!

Too bad the current Romanian team aren't exactly carrying on his legacy of great football

There is no honesty in competitive sport.

The uk, and usa are the biggest cheats, but they do it in a more advanced way. Most sports want to keep it quiet how they cheat, so countries like usa, whom probably are the biggest cheats, will never get touched.

Sports are very competitive and there is no honesty in sports. There may be respect, but no honesty.

Maradona is the best captain a team could have, probably ever. He lifted everyone of his teams to new levels.

Only modern player near maradona, was zidane.

The reason why cantona, never did anything other then for manu, was manu was cheating with weapons. If someone else used weapons on him, he was useless. Thats why in europe he was always rubbish, for manu. Manu under fergie, was just using weapons, thats why they won games 7,8,9-0, in premier league. When cantona played against a team also using weapons, like in champions league, he was useless.

Thats why cantona, is not all that great. A bit like beckham. Only does it, when teh team he was playing for was cheating with weapons, but when the weapons were used on him, he was useless.

On maradona, he was probably the most cheated against player in football history. Go and watch the tackles, they would use on him, and tell me, if someone like ronaldo today, could of taken, all that abuse.

Great players do it no matter what. Thats why zidane, is the modern day equivalent, of maradona. He did it when it mattered, and he would of been targeted enough with weapons, for his clubs, and for france.

Great players perform, no matter what. Over rated players, only do it, playing for the biggest teams, and cannot do anything playing for average teams, when they have no real protections. Ronaldo is such a player. Portugal won the european championships without him in effect, he did nout the whole tournament, and did not play most of the final last year. Ronaldo is such an overated player, whom plays for biggest club sides, whom use all the weapons available, to cheat. He does not have to do anything.

Lol, I don't know about them cheating, but the men's USA team don't win football tournaments, they're rubbish. The women's USA team however, are fantastic right now, currently no.1 in the world, while the male team are only no.26.

Same with the English national team in fact, the female team are currently no.3 in the world while the male team are only no.13.

In both these countries the women footballers are rising above the men when it comes to international competition.

Maradona has cheated more than any other player I know of, he scored an illegal goal in a world cup final, pretty much the most dishonorable thing a soccer player can do.
He was also expelled from a world cup for using illegal steroids, so whatever punishment he took, he cancelled out by not being an honorable player.

I haven't heard of Ronaldo using weapons in matches, what weapons do you mean exactly?
Do you mean when they call his long shots 'bullets'?
That's just a figure of speech man, they're not really bullets.

Oh please, Cantona was a fantastically talented player, he could score goals in a number of different ways, headers, solo goals, long shots, chips over the 'keeper. And he was also an excellent crosser of the ball, not to mention a machine who could last the entire 90 minutes.

As for Beckham, he was a fucking one-man-army when it came to football, he could win matches by himself in his prime. He was an inspiration for his national team whenever he played, and when everyone else gave up hope in an England match, you could always count on David to continue fighting in earnest...and probably save the game too!

Zidane was awesome, I watched a lot of italian football when he was playing for Juventus. Easily the best midfielder in the world in his time there.

Weapons will only get you so far.

If americas best athletes became football players, with there weapons, and drug cheating, they would probably easily win.

But seeing as america is the size of europe, you could say, if all countries in eu had one team, that would also be quite a team, of sports people.

Cheating can only get you so far, you need talent, and ability also.

But with america, there best athletes goto other sports. America gets pretty far, with very ordinary players in world cups. In 2002, probably the worst world cup in terms of quality, they made it to semis, with very ordinary players.

The american team in football always play well above themselves in world cups. But you still have to have ability to beat teams, its why america has only ever got to a semi, but that was in the worst quality world cup in our lifes, in 2002. The worst quality german team(in our lifes) just barely beat them in that semi.

For people that do not know non lethel weapons, can generate all sorts of effects, from negative, like headaches, or lack of energy, to positive, like being hyped up, like on drugs.

Football today is riddled with weapons use. Back when alex fergie was manager of manu, he had a free time in english football, until this truth came out, and now everyone is doing this.

*facepalm*

If they were truly using targeted electromagnetic weapons on their opponents to win games, then surely they would have never lost a game?

Its not like man-united were unbeatable! They were only humans, just very talented humans.

Yes very true.

Most of their best athletes either do an olympic sport, or american football, or baseball.

Hardly ever will star athletes play soccer in america because it is sort of frowned upon.

Its seen as a 'gay' sport over there, I think the general american view is that 'it's for English pansies and girls!'.

They only think that because if you compare it to american football, soccer is quite a soft sport.
But then again no one should play American football its a ridiculous sport

well at least the american girls don't mind taking the burden of the soccer talent over there, they are killing it right now.

Lol. They should try Rugby League. No pansy padding and helmets there.

P.S. Johan Cryuff.

Tony Adams , not exactly a ballerina on the ball but held a line and made the game hard to play for the opposing team - one of the best England defenders IMO

Gary Lineker was a hero of mine during childhood until I had the misfortune of spotting him in a pub on holiday and after summing up the courage to go and say hello he told me to fuck off.

I was just a child Gary !!!!!!!!!

I was only ever interested in international games so I don't have any animosity toward people based on club teams :p
