‘Act of aggression’: Bolivia to file UN complaint over airspace blockade

Spain has authorized Bolivia’s presidential jet to pass through its airspace and continue its journey to Bolivia, the Austrian President has said. The plane was grounded in Austria Wednesday morning over suspicions that Edward Snowden was on board.
The Bolivian presidential jet has left Vienna and is on its way to La Paz, AFP reports.

Morales' jet was forced into landing in Vienna on Wednesday after several EU countries barred the plane from entering their airspace over suspicions that whistleblower Edward Snowden was potentially aboard.
Austrian authorities searched Morales’ plane for Edward Snowden, but found no stowaways on board, Austria’s deputy chancellor has said. The plane will now carry on its journey to the Canary Islands where it will refuel before flying to La Paz.
Snowden had requested asylum from Bolivia, which has yet to answer his request. The fugitive whistleblower has also petitioned Austria but was rejected. Reports indicated the plane was hindered in navigating Western Europe as France and Portugal would not allow the La Paz-bound plane to enter their airspace.
David Choquehuanca, the Bolivian Foreign Minister, refuted the idea Snowden was on the plane, saying“we don’t know who invented this lie, but we want to denounce to the international community this injustice with the plane of President Evo Morales.”

'Kidnapped by imperialism'
The grounding of Morales’ plane triggered a torrent of enraged rhetoric from Latin American leaders amid accusations the craft had been “kidnapped by imperialism.”
Morales told press at the airport that he was not a “criminal” and reminded EU countries that “we are no longer in the colonial period.” Moreover, he called on the countries that had closed their airspace to him to account for themselves.
“The governments of France, Spain and Portugal must explain to the world the reasons behind this delay,”said Morales, adding that these actions were indicative of the “repressive policies” of some EU countries. Morales mocked the fact some governments believed Snowden could be on board, saying“this young man isn’t a suitcase that I can take with me to Bolivia.”
Several Latin American leaders rallied behind Bolivia denouncing the detention of Morales’ plane. President of Argentina, Cristina Kirchner, decried the situation as “madness” on her Twitter account“The head of state and his plane have total immunity. This level of impunity is unprecedented,” tweeted Kirchner.
Cuba also condemned Morales’ detention as an “unacceptable and unjustifiable act that offends Latin America and the Caribbean.”

'Act of Aggression': Bolivian pres grounded amid Europe's Snowden lockdown

The move to detain the presidential plane triggered a wave of furious rhetoric from Latin American leaders who alleged it had been “kidnapped by imperialism.”
Morales called on the countries who had cancelled air permits for the presidential flight to explain their decision.
“The governments of France, Spain and Portugal must explain to the world the reasons behind this delay,”said Morales, adding that these actions were indicative of the “repressive policies” of some EU countries.
“This is an excuse to try and frighten, intimidate and punish me. An excuse to try and gag us in the fight against the dominant economic powers,” said Morales.
France released a statement following the diplomatic scandal, saying that permission was granted to enter French airspace as soon as the authorities were aware “the aircraft in question was that of President Morales.”
“Of course, never been any intention of refusing President Morales’s plane access to our airspace; President Morales is always welcome in our country,” read the statement released by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
There was backlash in Bolivia where protesters burnt a French flag in front of France's embassy in La Paz.
