(Unless they weren't born yet of course!) I was working in a car spares and accessories shop in Great Bridge near Tipton at the time. It was just a normal day, about 1pm we had 'Mark And Lard' on Radio 1 playing through the car stereo display we had in the store. One of the gaffers phoned our shop, urging us to switch to Radio 4. The news was just breaking, and we all stood in shock as we listened to what was being reported. A plane had hit the World Trade Center in New York. The reports continued, and then came the 'breaking news' that a second plane had hit the other tower. It was almost unbeliveable to listen to. After listening a little while longer, we switched back to Radio 1 (as you do), when there was the regular news bulletin on the half hour. After that, Mark (Ratcliffe) and Lard (Marc Riley), announced they would be dispensing with their usual jokes and satirical humour, and would just play out the rest of their show with the music on their playlist. It wasn't until we finished work after 5pm, and I headed home, stopping off at my local pub on the way, when I first saw the recorded TV footage on the news. After a couple of pints, I then went home to have something to eat and get changed, then it was back to the pub on the evening with my friends. The footage on the news shown on the TV in the bar lounge was by then on a repeat loop. It's funny how I can't recall what I was doing on a specific date last week, let alone a specific date 19 years ago now. Posted September 11, 2020 Share Posted September 11, 2020 September the 11th - 2001. l walked into the reception on the 21st floor of 1 Canada Square in Canary Wharf....the tallest building in the UK at the time. l was confronted by large multiple screens showing the impact footage. l thought it was film / movie footage until the receptionist explained. l realised l was in the tallest building in the UK, made my excuses and left. l then went on to the next part of my day......at the Natwest Tower. Realising that l was then in the second tallest building in the UK, l called my boss with bullshit reasons and went home. lt took me at least a year to start looking into 911 properly. Although what I was seeing on the TV in the pub was really quite astonishing, I was prepared to believe what I was seeing and hearing. I guess in hindsight, that night in the pub - and the next few after that - was the 'start' of my 'awakening'. Me and some similar aged friends would sit and talk with some older fellas, and even at that time, some questions were being asked about what had happened and what the 'implications' would be in the future. This would become all that was talked about for the next few days at work too. There was 'fear', fear that a war was forthcoming, and that I was at an age where I might be 'called' up. Of course, the same 'fear' was brought up when I was in school, at the onset of the 1991 Gulf War. Fear is a very powerful emotion, I realise this now. Then them both wheeling in the big old tv with the news on infront of my class so we could all watch while we made our pineapple upside down cakes.
