Grumpy Owl
While taking a little break at work today, my mind started pondering on things, and for some reason, I started thinking about the word 'smart'. This was triggered because I'd just pulled my 'smart' phone out of my pocket to check my emails (I don't do this on a regular basis, I was expecting one from somewhere). Smart phone, smart TV, smart car, smart meters, smart cities, smart lamps, all sorts of 'smart' tech. But its not just 'marketing jargon' is it? What I started thinking about was, what if 'smart' was actually an acronym? Within a few seconds, it came into my head: "Subject Monitoring And Remote Tracking" Ooh, it gave me a little chill that did! I had to finish my smoke and get back in the office. I really don't know where it came from, but when I think about what our 'smart phones' are capable of, as well as things like smart TVs, smart meters, smart cars etc, it sort of made sense. The biggest irony was later this afternoon, when I got a call from my new energy provider (I recently switched from nPower to Green Energy Network), and a nice lady started asking me if I'd be interested in having a smart meter installed... metak88
That one is used to indicate a failing hard drive, but it can also be applied to all these smart devices because that's what they do. They self-monitor, monitor you in many ways, they send/analyze/report all this data to third-parties.
EnigmaticWorld
Smart devices, but dumb people. The machines now know more about most people than their loved ones do. The machines know our political/religious views, shopping habits, love interests etc. They're not even content with just knowing about us as they also want know what surrounds us by using object recognition. The IoT bloody sucks big time and it's just the beginning.
