How to get the most out of this forum - Help & FAQs

Recommended Posts

Welcome! New members are usually very keen to jump straight in and get involved, so I thought I'd put up a handy guide for beginners, which also may be of benefit to established members also.

Categories, topics, posts and replies

The forum has been structured into sections and categories. Before starting a new topic, please look for the most appropriate category to start in.

Use the search or have a browse first. A topic may already exist, in which case simply reply to that topic to add your own thoughts. Discussions just get 'diluted' if there are multiple threads covering the same topic.

If you want to reply to a specific post in a topic, click the Quote link at the bottom of that post, and that post will be 'quoted' in your reply.

If you only want to quote part of a post, just click and select the text, once it is highlighted, a box appears showing 'Quote Selection'

You can also use the 'multi-quote' feature by clicking the [+] button next to the Quote link, select multiple posts to add to 'multi-quote', then click on the "Quote X posts" button that appears at the bottom-right to insert those quotes into your reply.

Image and video embedding

The forum software automatically 'embeds' suitable image and video URLs into your post, all you have to do is copy and paste the link/URL into your post. For images on other webpages, just right-click and select 'Copy image location' to get the URL of that image.

eg:

https://davidicke.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/DAVID-LONDON-9IMAGE.jpg

will automatically appear as:

DAVID-LONDON-9IMAGE.jpg

This also works for videos hosted at YouTube, Vimeo, TikTok and Daily Motion. (For videos, please be sure to paste the 'full' URL to the video, not any 'shortened' links, and paste the link as 'plain text')

eg, paste the URL:

https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x62saw2

Tweets from Twitter and posts from Facebook* can also be embedded in the same way.

eg, paste the URL:

https://twitter.com/garethicke/status/1383161810191269888

* Since Facebook made changes to their API, Facebook posts no longer embed here.

Unfortunately auto-embedding does not yet work for videos hosted on BitChute, although they do support the oEmbed standards required for this to work here.

Videos hosted at Rumble, BrandNewTube, Odysee, Banned.video and Brighteon will not embed here either, as those sites do not support oEmbed standards.

Any URL's that cannot be 'embedded' will just be displayed as clickable links.

If you have an image stored locally on your own computer, in order for it to be displayed in your post, you will need to upload it as an 'attachment'.

Starting a new topic

Try and make your topic title clear and understandable as to what you are posting about. There's no need to post ALL IN CAPITALS, and try and avoid 'click-bait' type titles including phrases such as "MUST SEE!" and "watch before its deleted!" etc

Make sure you start your topic in the most appropriate area of the forum. If you think you've made a mistake and posted in the wrong area, use the Report Post function to alert a moderator, and your topic can be moved to a more appropriate category. Don't just post the same thing again elsewhere.

Try and post your own original content. If you're sharing a YouTube video, please also include your own thoughts and perhaps an explanation of what the video shows. If you're copying and pasting material from elsewhere, make sure to include a link to the original source. Avoid copying and pasting full length articles; perhaps offer a few introductory paragraphs, interested readers can always click through to the full article to read more.

Try to proof-read your post before clicking the 'Submit reply' or 'Submit topic' button. Posts can be edited for up to one hour, this is intended for correcting any 'typos' or spelling/grammar errors that you may spot. It is NOT for drastically changing the content of your post, especially if others have since replied.

Editing Posts

If anyone is wondering where the 'Edit' option has gone, this is now found in the 'More options' menu that appears when you click/tap on the 'three dots' icon at the top-right of your post:

image.png.5607e3575376e356d6104f77d6d129c8.png

Members have a 'grace period' of up to 1 hour to make any edits to their post - this is intended for making any corrections to spelling and/or grammar, not for making wholesale changes, especially if other people have already replied and/or quoted the post.

Topic titles

Reiterating what has been stated previously:

Quote

Try and make your topic title clear and understandable as to what you are posting about. There's no need to post ALL IN CAPITALS, and try and avoid 'click-bait' type titles including phrases such as "MUST SEE!" and "watch before its deleted!" etc

Please enter a topic 'subject' that is clear and relevant to what you are presenting. Titles all IN CAPITALS look like you are 'shouting' and from my own experience can also be perceived as 'attention-seeking'. Same goes for using phrases such as

URGENT!

BOMBSHELL...

MUST SEE!

These kinds of 'clickbaity' titles work well on mainstream news websites and other sites desperate for clicks to gain ad revenue, but this is a serious discussion board, not MSN 😉

(On a side note it is interesting how many videos titled "watch before its deleted" never actually get deleted!)

Please also don't use your username or real name as your topic title, or 'Mr', 'Dr', 'Ms' etc as I have seen numerous people doing.

Videos and other external links

If you have a video or a link to some other external website to share, please make sure to provide some context or a summary to give others an idea of what to expect.

Please also include the title of the video in your post - YouTube does have a nasty habit of removing 'controversial material' from its site, so in the event that an embedded video gets deleted from there, others can search for the title on other platforms.

Posts containing just links and no other content, especially if the links are 'shortened' URLs, may be perceived as being 'spam' and if so, will be removed.

Hi Grumpy Owl,

I have a stupid question 😅

I keep seing posts that say "out of likes".

So, how many likes do we have?

What happens when you have no more likes, how do you "recharge" them? 😅

Thanks brother.

The limit is fixed by the forum admins. The only sensible suggestion I can make for now is to stop handing out likes/reactions like confetti. 😉

Adding hyperlink to images

Suppose we have an image from a URL or as an Attachment, such as this ...

coronavirus_0.jpg

Clicking on this image will just show the image in a popup. [Try it]

What if we wanted to link the image to a URL such as Wikipedia, Google, or our own website when it was clicked?

Simply double-click the image in the post (while editing) and you will see a dialogue offering you various options, inluding adding a Link URL.

DIlink_img.png.6498fb172bca799005b6a0e480e8cb0c.png

Click the 'Update' button and submit your post when finished.

You should now find that clicking the posted image takes you to the link you entered, (in this case, to the UK Column website). [Try it]

coronavirus_0.jpg

Hope this helps. It's a useful feature and not always obvious to people not used to the forum.

To reiterate the above point, yes, it is great that this forum software automatically embeds pasted YouTube links, so you can watch them here.

But it is equally vital to also include the video title, and perhaps a brief summary of what the video presents or what its about.

Because if you don't, once Youtube 'deletes' that video, this is all that remains:

image.png.f6f7ef9db10077fd5c3bead107f17950.png

Not singling anyone out here, this is the first example I came across while looking back through an older topic here earlier. With no title or context, I have no idea what this video was, or what it was about. And neither would anyone else who was browsing through this topic.

Please don't just 'dump links', provide some additional information!

Seems to have fixed once reinstalling snip
EDIT: no it hasn't fixed - it's doing it again but only on the DI site?

Not sure what the issue is, but you could always try an image uploading site. That's what I do because I reached my file limit on this site ages ago.

ahh right?  Is that it then?  Is there a file limit on the forum so once reached you can't copy & paste anything over?
Ok will look into that then many thanks.

Lastly, when I go into 'my attachments' on my profiles thingy, I can see there is a message there saying I've used up 488.13mb out of 488.28mb.
So you were right enigmatic thanks again.
But - can anyone let me know how to delete all the shitty attachments (jpegs etc from ages ago) so I can have my allowance back?
I've tried this and that and nothing works. Boo-hoo.🙄
I am feeling very inadequate right now think I need to find some cosy slippers and a cup of horlicks...maybe a chocolate digestive or even a hobnob will do?

Any help/advice very much appreciated.

MOD NOTE: If members have no storage space left I can help. If you Flagg me your old posts that have pictures etc I can remove some. I don’t mean removing the whole post just less important pictures. I did a load a while ago for a member. It doesn’t take long

Hi @EnigmaticWorld and anyone else that may know what to do here.  I'm usually pretty okay but think I'm missing something out here with regards to embedding from a 3rd party site, such as:

https://imgbb.com/

So, when I go to that website (after saving a picture or whatever to the computer), I upload it and a kind of url image address appears that gives me the option to 'copy' which I do so.
Here:
image.png.de3a03db205447c457ec166300821dd7.png

Then - in the DI site, when I open a reply within the thread, I just right click and paste the url image thingy into the field and the image should appear - is that right?
The url image link (above) appears but no picture?  Nuffink?
At this point I have not 'made' the post, as the image 'should' appear after pasting over that url thingy - but, nothing?

Or- do I have to press the embed button?
I'm well pissed off at myself - any help advice appreciated cheers.?

Basically, you need the image link that ends with .jpg, .png, or whatever image file you're using. If you open the image in its own tab then you should be able to get it.

The other method is to right-click the image, and select "Copy image link" (wording may vary depending on browser, I use Firefox":

image.png.07f43b025aaf41aafd3eb35d1342b99c.png

Then just paste the link in a post here, and the forum should then embed that image.
