Terry Gilliam's "Brazil" springs to mind:

 

When I first watched it a few years ago now, my first impression was that it was some sort of spoof or 'satire' of 1984, but I think there is much more to it now.

Which was interesting because when i was watching it i remember commenting to my girlfriend when they splash about in the water that the water looked really stagnant and that they were asking for trouble doing that

 

The river that ran through the site was heavily polluted due to industry nearby and its possible that several members of the cast and crew were affected by it as they all died young of health problems including tarkovsky who died aged only 54

 

The other possibility is that they were bumped off by the state

Even Eagle Eye showed the Network getting a mind of its own. It shows the Network, the Deep State [TDS], trying to get the Govt killed [see how they are trying to get a persona non grata, Biden onto centrestage as a stooge of TDS and decimate Donald Trump who strangely appears to be with the Conspiracy Theorists ?!?]

 

AI has not actually taken off, to the extent that they get robots to man everything. Rather, they probably intend to reduce the freedom of human beings like China does to its Uyghurs using FaceCam & SocialCredit and call it an AI victory.

don't know if this suffices as 'dystopian' but the film 'Melancholia' is an end-of-earth film.

There's nothing like a good depressing movie to help raise one's spirits.

 

Unsure if all these titles count but they'd be difficult to be classed as utopian.

 

In alphabetical order...

 

Bad Taste (1988): Alien invasion from outer space. Humans treated as pieces of meat. Early Peter Greenaway flick.

The Circle (2017): A naive young woman joins a cultish tech company only to discover they're totally against privacy. She ends up turning the tables on her employer by using the very same technology on them, thus managing to remain in the same perceptual box and never really escaping to freedom.

The Day After (1983): A post-apocalyptic future worse than any stink bomb.

Eyeborgs (2009): Surveillance cameras run amok -- literally. These mechanical creatures can run, skip, hop, walk and peek around corners and are shaped like giant golf balls. (Kind of goofy.)

The Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (1956): Who can you trust when the people in science, government, and law-enforcement turn out to be pod people?

The Island Of Dr. Moreau (1995): Is about what happens when scientists mess around with nature and genes (when they could be lying in a hammock on an island sipping a cocktail instead).

Killer Condom (1995): Toothy, homicidal prophylactics are on the loose and preying on manhood. A nightmarish scenario where the very practice of safe sex comes under attack.

Left Behind (2000): A movie about the end of days, the rapture, and a man working in mainstream media who converts to Christianity. (Who said this was a Fantasy?)

Miracle Mile (1989): Yet another movie in a long tiresome list about the world coming to an end. (Makes you wonder how many nihilists are in the filmmaking industry.)

The Rapture (1991): The lovely Mimi Rogers plays a woman who is called on by two door-to-door ministers who tell her that the end is nigh and that she must seek salvation. She escapes to the desert along with her daughter to await being caught up to heaven. Not as uplifting as it sounds. Contains a memorable ending.

The Road (2009): A man hits the open highway on foot in search of survivors.

Stephen King's The Stand (1994): Heavy on the eschatology; about a spiritual battle between the forces of good and evil, with humans caught in the middle, but of course.

There's a French animated noir dystopian film called Renaissance another brilliant and famous future dystopian movie is Blade Runner that to this day can boast some the best cinematography and special effects and still it was made in 1982.

 

Equilibrium is based on a future where we are vaccinated agsinst emotions and it stars Christian Bale. The Sin City movies have a gritty comic book style detective dark city vibe and of course A Scanner Darkly, Minority Report and last but not least Dark City where a man discovers a group of aliens called the Strangers are controlling the city, swapping memories and altering buildings as an experiment on the captive humans.

 

The 2011 Priest has an assassin Priest hunting Vampires following a war where they now live in colonies under an uneasy peace with mankind. For the most dystopian TV..... just watch the News.

 

Definitely watch eXistenZ and Idiocracy is indeed funny. Yet out of all of these movies and without a single doubt, Blade Runner is the very very best.... I love movies.

SPOILER ALERT!! But for those who've seen Blade Runner, enjoy this classic and beautiful ending, 'Tears in the Rain'.

Two that are virtually very true to life

 

Harrison Bergeron (1995)

Control Factor (2003)

 

Both are virtually documentaries, made as fiction by hollywood, and both tell of the world at end of cold war, and why the cold war ended, and what technology was in place by end of cold war.

 

Both movies show the world that existed in 1990's, but shown as fiction. Both handle what was going on in slightly different ways, but both are virtually documentaries, but told as fiction, ie films. Both are b type movies, that most will never see.

 

Both films could be seen as depicting nato countries at end of cold war, and into the 1990's.

 

Both are much more realistic than anything like matrix, or the island you speak off op.
