Demure Debbie Posted June 8, 2021 Share Posted June 8, 2021 (edited) The problem with most protest songs is that they are often corny, cheesy often with excruciating, sanctimonious lyrics that make you want to draw your fingernails down an old fashioned blackboard. Then of course there's the nauseating computer graphic video. Some, like many here are comedic but they never last. Written and penned in less than 60 minutes, normally to recognizable 3 or 4 chord tunes that were hits from the past, they are just as instantly forgettable. The good lasting protest songs were done by the likes of Woodie Guthrie, Bob Dylan, John Lee Hooker, Howlin' Wolf, Elmore James etc. - powerful as fuck but probably lost on most people nowadays. I doubt most people here would know what I was talking about. My dad taught me a lot about music. My fave ever protest song for explosive lyrics, atmosphere, originality was by a guy called Country Joe singing The Vietnam Song, sung in front of thousands of people. I realize people my age don't listen to lyrics much but if anyone can point me in the direction of a better protest song than this, please do so. Nothing I've seen on this thread comes close. Give me an 'F', give me a 'U' give me a 'C' , give me a 'K' ...what's that spell. Just brilliant.
