I was bang into gaming in my formative years but stopped playing about a decade ago.

I started on commodore 64, tape deck, copied my own games and did basic programming, not bad for an 8 year old.

Then I was pretty much behind on every major console until I could afford to buy my own. So I was a Nintendo kid until PlayStation hit the stores, although I never had a N64.

Last console, still got it, was the PS3. Loved sports games like fight night, tiger Woods, gran turismo etc. Can't stand shooter games, liked the first modern warfare game but hated anything after that. Best game series I've played without doubt was GTA, loved them all,  superb game play and look. I've said if they release a new one on the PS5 I'd get it. But that game only. And my other favourite was assassins creed, just awesome story and game play. The new ones, whilst I've not played them look just amazing, climbing the pyramids of giza ffs! Top draw.

Ah well, no time for that shit anymore and I usually do my other more expensive hobby in DJ-ing. Time consuming both are but I've only got time for one and music wins every time. 🤣

I started with an Amstrad CPC, then moved on to Nintendo and Sega.

I have a love/hate relationship with Xbox and Playstation. I miss the days when realism wasn't so important, when engaging gameplay was key.

Kind of went off GTA after GTA 4, but GTA is good social commentary of America.

Never had an xbox, hated the controller and just like Apple, everything is an add on. Like paying to play online was a joke. I think you've gone in a different direction, I would game if I had the time, but if I have an hour to spare it would be to mix and that goes back to your comment about wasting your life. Nothing wasted when I mix because it's creative and uplifting. I made that conscious decision along time ago that if I am going to have a hobby it would continue to be music as that's what I love most. Or maybe I've not grown-up, I certainly don't feel my age that's for sure.

It's funny because we went in different directions. I used to have turntables and be into rave culture, but it doesn't hold my interest these days. Still miss chatting in my old local vinyl shop though.

Ah, the old digging in a vinyl shop, spent many hour and days doing that in various places. A shop in my town was good, but I always had to listen to the shit he was trying to get shot of before he gave me the behind the counter stuff. Got to a point were I said surely I can skip listening to the shit and listen to the good stuff now! 🤣

Oh I wasn't having a dig dude. Mixing is definitely more productive than gaming, that's for sure.

Didn't they let customers play what they want? I remember playing truant and just jamming in my local store hogging the decks with my pals. lol

I never said you were mate, just talking about me and my experiences,  everyone's different with varying tastes that evolve as we get older. I suspect I'll be listening to Techno on my death bed. And yes, back in my day you could rock up, pick a stack, and I mean a stack of tunes and listen to as many as you wanted. Good times, the best times. Not like now. Everything is shit. Same for the music, it's stale.

I don't get these new games. I used to play all the big games, but the last one I really liked was the Witcher 3. Now I only play Rocket League and FIFA online. Cyberpunk is shit, I think about playing Red Dead 2...

AAA games are getting very repetitive. I don't think it's a coincidence that these giant studios and publishers keep putting out broken games now that they focus on political agendas instead of quality games. Fortunately we still have indie devs that still innovate, but I understand that console gamers don't get a lot of great indie titles.

On a more positive note, the exodus from AAA gaming continues, and this brings money and creativity into the smaller studios. Kids growing up today don’t have a dream of going to work for Blizzard, instead they want to start their own dev studios.

What is a good game then? Remember I am rather old lol

Lol. My Nan plays video games to keep her mind active and she is in her 80s, mainly puzzle games. You're never too old to have a bit of fun or to want a challenge at something.

It's hard to say what to suggest as it depends what you're into. I personally like a bit of most genres, but then I have grew up with gaming in my household since the British home computing era. Some of my best memories with my Grandfather are playing math games with him on an old Amstrad. At the time I just wanted to play stuff with more action, but he would always try an get me to play educational stuff and then allow me to play more fun stuff once I did a bit of learning. At the time I thought he was being mean, but I appreciate it now looking back at those days.

I like slower paced stuff that gives me time to strategize, stuff like Civilization, Command and Conquer, Nobunaga's Ambition, and the Total War series.

I also like faster pace stuff like first person shooter games, especially ones that have a strong emphasis on teamwork, movement and positioning, but they're probably not the best suggestion for some of us older folks as the younger players can have insane reflex skills. The FPS genre has gone pretty downhill too as of late.

I like detective kind of games like Orwell and old point & click games like Terry Pratchett's Discworld series.

I also like simple family games that I can play with my niece, stuff like Mario Kart.

Puzzle games can be great too, whether that is simple stuff like Tetris or more complex stuff like Portal.

I guess it comes down to what interests you. Some people like a good story driven game, some like games that are more about strategy, some like their sports games, some like their music/rythm games, and some just want to release stress by playing games where they can just go pew pew.

One aspect of gaming where my taste has changed is visuals. Growing up I used to be pretty obsessive about realism in gaming, but as an adult a nice stylized art style appeals to me much more than realism, especially games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. That's probably because of my creative side though. Some of the shots in that game are stunning.

I remember a time when video games used to be 'fun'.

Harmless entertainment, games that made you 'think', by solving puzzles and challenges. Engage your brain matter in a productive way.

Yeah, I played a few games in my time where killing was involved. But it seems to me that MOST games nowadays involve killing in some way.

Is killing now 'fun'?

For me, Half Life 2 is still a masterpiece. Yeah, there was a lot of shooting and killing, but it was sort of necessary in order to survive and get through that dystopian nightmare.

The Grand Theft Auto games were also great fun, I did like the open format of it, you could do a few missions and then just cruise around and explore the map.

The last console I owned was a Nintendo Wii, though I did continue playing PC games after that. But a few years ago now, I just stopped playing games altogether. Something flipped inside me, and it was like I realised it was all a complete waste of my time.

I bought GTA5 from Steam, downloaded it and you know what, I've never even played it since.

Sometimes I do get hankerings for the 'good old days'; I do still have a Nintendo GameCube, and I did get it out a couple of years back and loved playing games like Pikmin and Zelda The Wind Waker.

My parents couldn't afford a Commodore C64, so we ended up with a Plus/4 which was basically a souped up Commodore C16.

I forget now how old I was but I did start getting interested in BASIC programming. One of my personal highlights was when we bought a game called Soccer Boss, a (very early) football management simulator. Unlike many other commercially available games of the time, it was actually coded in BASIC, so after being bored with its limitations (only three leagues, and a load of made up player names) I actually managed to reprogramme it so there were four divisions (no Premier League at that time!) with clubs in their correct divisions, as well as some other enhancements.

A modern day equivalent would be like buying a movie on DVD and then editing it in video software to make a better version!

My adventures with programming from scratch started and ended with the STOS Game Creator software I had for my Atari ST; I did actually once create a game that was reminiscent of the Lightcycles from TRON, that was the pinnacle of my non-commercial game creation career!

Depends what kind of games you're talking about. I won't lie, FPS games are probably my main genre, but it's a social thing too, playing with your clan/platoon or whatever.

That being said, I have never been one for mindless run and gun crap like Call of Duty. I prefer FPS games that involve more teamwork. It doesn't have to be soley about killing, you can be a recon, engineer, ammo guy or medic, etc.

I just see character models and textures, the violence doesn't really do much for me, but I can understand how games can be problematic for young developing minds.

Now you mention this, I'm reminded of the game 'Planetfall' that I used to play with some work colleagues when I used to work at a PC manufacturing company.

That was some incredible fun to play, my first encounter with a massively-multiplayer online game. I used to struggle with a 'boots-on-the-ground' role in that, but I did revel in piloting the craft to drop off my colleagues 'into battle' and then pick them back up again. Oh, those were the days!

Sounds like Planetside, I thought Planetfall was a turn-based strategy game.

Ah yes you're right, my memory is letting me down!

Planetside was one of the first massively-multiplayer online games, and it was great fun. The next one my colleagues at work got me into was Star Wars: Galaxies, now I really enjoyed that one as I love Star Wars, and I actually kept playing this by myself after I left that company and lost contact with my co-workers.

Never tried Galaxies, heard some good stories about it though.

I have played quite a bit of Planetside 2. Great game.
