In the latest build 20.04 LTS, nvidia has been great and I have not had any updates do anything hanky. I haven't installed any games yet, but the game related nvidia posts on the pop os reddit group have been very positive. I wish I had switched to Linux much sooner. Don't do gaming as it wastes my time so basically run of the mill office tasks, browsing.....that's about it. I do think that quiet fan is a necessity though. serpentine Posted June 27, 2020 Share Posted June 27, 2020 Eschewing the expensive hobby of bleeding edge 3d gaming and going for quiet low power internet the 5 inch external usb fan blowing air across the desk here is the only noise with a silent GF 1030 graphics card and a dc socket on the itx m/b allowing the thing to run off a laptop psu. Truthspoon Posted June 27, 2020 Share Posted June 27, 2020 (edited) My issue is I don't want to buy a desktop computer because I like to travel light. So while I've got a laptop with a decent real quad core I5 my graphics card is a 4gb Nvidia 1050. I know it's a hardly enough but finding a laptop with a decent graphics card without getting your pants pulled down and bent over for the price of it is near impossible... I've got the Lenovo Legion 520. I got it in a sale and paid about half the usual retail price. But the build quality leaves a lot to be desired and as with most Legions of the range, the hard drive is useless and slow hence my replacing it with the excellent Samsung 970 plus. I got lucky for a while, as I got involved with the old MSI forum (when it was a user-to-user community which MSI stayed 'hands-off' from) and ended up a mod, then an admin. As we were 'volunteers' and didn't get any financial reward from MSI, they used to allow us to have 'free stuff' once a quarter, so I had a constant supply of motherboards, graphics cards and the like. About 10 years ago, I sort of lost interest in the whole scene, after MSI took the forum away from us and set up their own one instead. I also ran into financial difficulties, so I lost the ability to be able to constantly upgrade my PC with decent kit. I found myself losing interest in videogames, so I started dabbling with Linux, as games were the main reason I had Windows on my PC. I only went back to using Windows again a few years ago when I started my current job. We use some software at work which only runs on Windows, plus I needed to use Microsoft Office, as LibreOffice didn't have the same capabilities as MS Excel does. So my current PC is an 'off-the-shelf' ASUS PC, which I picked up from PC World one Sunday morning, it was decent spec at a reasonable price, in fact it worked out cheaper than building one myself, and I could use it straightaway. I think all I did with it was replace the PSU with the Corsair one out my 'old' PC, and added in some extra memory. Then later on replaced the HDD with an SSD. It has served me well the last four or five years, and I have absolutely no need to replace it all. I do also have an ASUS laptop, which while I don't use very often, does come in handy when I'm sitting out in the garden, and it has travelled with me on holiday on several occasions. With the exception of gaming PCs, it does seem to me that traditional desktop PCs have reached the end of a line, with very few innovations now. A basic low-end budget PC from Currys or Argos will handle most tasks for simple home users. And yes, unless you have some specialist applications that only run on Windows, Linux is a great 'free' alternative operating system. The VPN the company uses only works on Windoze so that is running on VirtualBox. Everything works, it just makes things harder than it needs to be. Back in the day, I do recall that there were some laptops available, where it was possible to replace the graphics card, but these were mainly gaming laptops. EnigmaticWorld Posted June 27, 2020 Share Posted June 27, 2020 The rig I have has an AMD FX-6350, a GTX 960 3gb and 16gb RAM. Definitely shows it's age though. Once I have finished my current project in Unity I will probably get one of the new Ryzen chips, not sure what GPU to get yet though as I haven't followed build guides or benchmarks for a while. She had retired and didn't need anything fancy now (she used to use AutoCAD software for her work) so I advised her to just get some cheap basic PC from PC World, she ended up paying about £300 for some Lenovo SFF PC. I warned her though not to listen to anything that the salespeople told her, otherwise she'd end up paying about £800 for something far more advanced than she needed. When I left college, I worked for about a year at an independent PC components wholesaler, and learned about building and configuring PCs. I lost my job when the business closed down, and tried to apply for a job at PC World. So I have often wondered how many people wander into PC World just looking for a simple PC to read emails and browse the internet, and end up walking away with something that could power an ecommerce website or bitcoin mining operation. I play the Switch quite a bit, but that's just so I can sit back with it while I'm watching youtube or bitchute. It's basically at the point where I can't concentrate on games unless I have something else on another screen. I have a pet peeve that I challenge myself to achieve, which makes a new build for me like a long term research project to see how much power, at the least amount of noise, and the most efficient cooling I can get at the best price. I guess it's the Engineer in me. I spent a LOT of time picking out each component under the stipulation that I might want to play a few decent games (haven't been a gamer since I last played halo 1 on my old xbox), but I don't have the need to be able to play every new AAA game, so 1080p is good enough to me. I knew I wanted a "mesh" case, so that meant I had to spend about $75 extra for the fans, an extra $30 for the Gaming X card, which is totally silent unless maxing it out, and $70 for the cpu cooler. Even under a decent load the entire machine is so quiet it sounds like a single fan. It's barely a whisper, even though it's right next to my head. I guess I messed up by getting it all right, because now I really have nothing to upgrade and nothing else to research or components to track down. So, I decided to build another desktop for my wife around a Sapphire rx-580 Nitro+ graphic card. I'm going to get her the same case I have because I really like it. And I already have an MSI b450m Tomahawk Max motherboard. Some of you guys above have some really nice components. I learned to build PC's while doing an internship during college as an IT help desk tech. at a defence contractor. They were just transitioning over from paper to computers and most people there did not have a computer. We built all of our PC's in-house and that was one of my jobs, building each PC to the employees needs and then installing and setting them up. I find building a PC a cathartic experience. It's like a stress relief, and it's so awesome when you get one built and it successfully boots up the first time. I think putting all the components are the easiest part....it's choosing which is time consuming... Where do you buy your components in the UK guys?
