strange unexplained stuff that has happened to you? please share

Reading the posts seems a lot of you have experienced sleep paralysis. I had that happen to me a lot when I was younger. Sometimes I'd go to bed and just know I was gonna have one.

The NHS says of it:

Sleep paralysis is when you cannot move or speak as you are waking up or falling asleep. It can be scary but it's harmless and most people will only get it once or twice in their life.

Yeah right. In my experience and from reading what other people who have had it say. If you have it, you don't just get it once, it happens a lot. Some people seem to have a propensity for it.

I've had some that were that scary that when I woke up my heart was beating like the clappers.

I sympathise with anyone who has it. It's horrid. Unfortunately there is no cure for it.

Just for a bit of fun & interest, a list of stuff that's happened to you that you just can't explain?  (or can?) Add your own, small things, big things,  here’s mine as an example: Extremely ev

It was the long hot summer of 1976 and it was here that I had my first weird experience with the paranormal. I was 16 years old at the time and working on the Isle of Arran in a hotel for the summer

I'm not done with my own weird shit yet, but seeing as you asked.... My mate was off on a night out with his mate and had called to his house. His mate was just about to go in the shower and told

is it sleep paralysis, when you think you're laying down to sleep, closing your eyes for the night, then about 10 seconds later, hear a loud thumping down the hallway, have something burst into your room, try to scream but can't, the thing stabs you in the chest. Then you wake up. Obviously very startled.

Certainly could be, inability to scream and move is part and parcel of the experience, and the malevolent entity is also quite common. I've been grabbed by the ankle and had some unseen force attempt to drag me from my bed before I came round to being actually awake.

A very weird and unexplained thing that happened when I was about 10 years old in the 1970s.

Before I go into it I'd like to give my view/stance on "supernatural/paranormal/unexplained" phenomena and occurrences. I'm an atheist and always look for the scientific explanation to anything like this. It is well known that the human brain is imaginative and  lends itself to hallucinating ( caused by various things ) so a lot of hauntings and odd experiences can be explained by such things, such as magnetic fields and damp in old buildings causing hallucinations.

I'm fascinated by these experiences and occurrences and take the approach of  finding the cause. I'd like to study parapsychology. I'd like to know the cause/truth of such things ( and I don't think it's just one cause either). I think science will be able to answer most if not all of it one day, but it certainly answers some of it already.

That doesn't negate the imagination or meaning in the experience either; for if someone has a positive experience ( even if it is not real in the physical sense) one can still get something from it.

In some haunted locations, researchers have measured magnetic fields that are stronger than normal or which exhibit unusual fluctuations. These may be localized phenomena that stem from electronic equipment or geological formations, or they may be part of the Earth's magnetic field.
Some paranormal investigators think of this as proof of a supernatural presence -- the ghosts create the field. Others suggest that these fields can interact with the human brain, causing hallucinations, dizziness or other neurological symptoms. Some researchers have theorized that this is one of the reasons people report more ghostly activity at night. Because of the way the solar wind interacts with the Earth's magnetosphere, the planet's magnetic field stretches out on the side that's in darkness. Some researchers hypothesize that this expanded field interacts more strongly with people's brains.

How stuff works site- would not let me post link, got that banned thing yet again.

I've had some experiences that could have some scientific explanation over the years but this one, I can't explain it. So, here goes:

I was asleep in bed in my small box room bedroom in the 1950s built council house I grew up. I was awoken by my bedroom door being jiggled. My bed was placed against the wall ( that was between my room and that of my brothers' ) and the bedroom door was along the end of the wall to my left, and very near the bed, so I could see the door being jiggled.

This was a ball bearing hinged door and VERY noisy. If you pulled it open via the door handle it would make a very loud bang ( see photo below of a ball bearing hinge). My Dad showed me how to slowly jiggle it open quietly if I needed to get up in the night to use the toilet. It was a small house and my mother would wake up so easily.

The door was being slowly jiggled open. It finally sprang open and the door swung open, and sharply stopped before it hit the built in box ( my room was half over the stairs) to its left ( see photo attached for an example of what this looked similar to). The speed at which the door sprung open, it would have hit the slab box thing but it did not. It sharply stopped.

I must add that this door was fairly heavy and my window was shut, so there's no way it could have been blown open by the wind. These doors when they were shut needed someone to pull them open.

I looked at the open doorway from my bed, expecting to see my mother standing there. I presumed that she had opened my door as maybe one of my brothers was ill and she wanted me to do something for her ( maybe go to the kitchen and get medicine) as I was the oldest.

But NOBODY was there! I'd sensed someone behind the door. Seen it being jiggled slowly, so as not to make too much noise.

I got up out of bed, very puzzled and crept outside my brothers' bedroom and put my ear to the door to see if one of them was awake and had done it for a prank.Silence. All asleep. Same with my parents' room. I looked in the toilet, then the bathroom ( they were seperate rooms). Nothing. I crept downstairs and looked in the front sitting room, then the back sitting room, then the kitchen. Nothing. I then  went back upstairs to my box bedroom, quietly shut the door and got into bed, very puzzled, but went back to sleep.

I was about 10 years old.  SOMETHING opened that door on purpose. Yet I got up to investigate. I was not afraid.

I look back on that and think WTF! I'm now 52 and the memory of it spooks me. I'd be very freaked out if that happened now. I didn't dream it. I saw it, I heard it, I got up out of bed to investigate it.

I told my Mum and one of my brothers about it at breakfast the next morning. Mum didn't know what to think. My brother immediately said it was him sleep walking. I replied to him that it wasn't because I saw the door swing open and nobody was standing there and I got up and his bedroom was silent with the door shut, and there wasn't enough tine for him to have got back to his room and shut his door without me seeing him. I was clever enough at that age to have it all worked out. He was about 8 at the time and he just kept saying it was him.

Years later as a an adult he admitted to me he lied because he thought it must've been something supernatural and he didn't want me to feel scared.

I'm still looking for an explanation for a natural  cause for a heavy ball bearing hinged door to be jiggled open by itself.  I'm not convinced on the existence of "spirits" and the Hadron Collider has evidence that they cannot exist. All very odd.

Yes, it is. It's terrifying and seems real but it isn't. I feel sorry for you. I know how scary it is.

The shills don't even bother turning up for my botty spanking sessions any more. Then again, now that I think about it for a brief moment, is it really so very strange and unexplained? I am actually surprised that these gluttons for punishment didn't quit years ago. Sigh. :classic_cool:

happened so fast though, never had time to consider moving and couldn't scream initially because was so scared and then once up in bed tried to scream and couldn't. actually at the time was feeling very relaxed about things in general so was a weird counter position. Was definitely some malevolent entity no doubt. Had no idea about any of that stuff at the time. Was into taking xtc though and smoking MJ

I'll try and document some of my experiences here as and when I have the time.

When I was a kid, my mate lived next door but one in a house that someone had committed suicide by gassing themselves years before. Apart from a few minor things, taps coming on by themselves ect, I don't remember the family talking about the house being truly haunted. One afternoon, my mate and I came back from the shops after doing the shopping for his mum. There was no one else in the house except us. We set the shopping down on the kitchen table, in them days they didn't have a fridge so most things were just plonked on the table. They had an Alsatian dog that had it's bed in the kitchen so we took care to make sure anything the dog might make a mess with was place in the middle of the table where she couldn't get at it. We placed all the tinned stuff round the edge and stuff like potatoes, sugar ect were placed in the middle. We pushed everything towards the middle leaving a gap of about 8 inches around the edge so all the shopping was tightly shoved together in the middle. We made a cuppa and went and sat in the living room...A few minutes later, we heard a dull but loud thud come from the kitchen. Thinking it was dog had got at something, we jumped up straightaway and ran into the kitchen expecting to see the dog with something off the table..We got in the kitchen to see a bag of sugar splattered all over the floor and the dog was just lay in it's bed looking as bemused as us. On further inspection, we noticed there was a gap in the shopping where the sugar had been right in the middle of the table, no way could his dog have got to it without pulling everything else off that was in the way, furthermore, the sugar had landed a good three to four feet away from the table and looked more like it had been thrown to the floor with force judging by the spread of the sugar on the floor, after a couple of seconds as we surveyed the scene, we heard really loud footsteps stomping around in the bedroom above...We cacked it and ran to the front door. As we opened the door a milkman was walking up the path to collect his money. He could see we were freaked out and we asked him if he would go upstairs and check for us as we had explained we were the only ones in the house, baring in mind we were about ten at the time, the big soft twat wouldn't do it but offered to stand at the door to stop anyone running out, so me and my mate armed ourselves with a few things and went up stairs...Checked every room...Nothing.

In the same house a few months later, me and my mate were once again the only ones there which was quite a rarity as there was twelve people in his family. We sat watching telly on his couch, me at one end, him at the other with a gap between us. The telly was on top of a high cupboard and the telly itself was only about 18 inches from the ceiling. On top of the telly, and no where near the edge of it, was a small brass ornament...All of a sudden, the ornament flew off the top of the telly with some force and landed between us on the couch which was a good seven feet away...We both looked at each other and ran outside and waited for someone from his family to come home...

On the subject of things moving by themselves...My mate was looking after his sisters flat in Sherringham, Norfolk. Me and my nephew went down to see him and stay at the flat for a coupe of days. The night we got there, we had a drink and a smoke but ran out of skins after a few hours, so my mate looked for some in a draw on a wall unit that had a large ornamental brandy balloon (you know the sort, they sometimes have a small porcelain kitten perched on the edge. About a foot high altogether) When all of a sudden, the ornament slowly but steadily slid about four feet along the unit. Me and my nephew could see my mate never went near it or did anything to cause it to move even though he was stood no more than a foot away with both hands in the drawer...I had to sleep in that room that night...Fucking worst nights sleep ever...couldn't wait for the dawn...

...Fast forward to the 1980's. Me and another friend were walking home from his sisters after a late one. As we walked down this road, my mate started flapping about something in white that was moving behind this bush we were walking towards. Unsure whether we were about to get jumped, we slowly carried on walking towards where he'd seen the movement. We came to the entrance to a school with the caretakers house and garden at the side of it..That's when my mate blurted out.."There it is there" and pointed in the caretakers garden where there was a little girl aged about 8, wearing what looked like a white Victorian petty coat, with long blond hair and she was skipping round a rose bush. There was a full moon and she glowed white in the moonlight...She noticed us and ran round the back of the house and reappeared peeping at us from the corner of the house. At the time, we just thought it was a little girl who'd snook out of the house, we even reported it to a copper we bumped into on the way home. Like I say, at this point no inkling she was anything other than a little girl. About ten years later, another friend had just moved into a pub and was telling me about the spooky stuff going on there when another of my friends excitedly interrupted him to tell us about a couple of guys he knew who had recently had an experience and had lost the plot because they had seen a little girl skipping round some roses in a school caretakers garden...I stopped him and asked where it was...Turns out it was the same place only this time she faded and disappeared right in front of them....The feeling that washed over me was like nothing I'd felt before..I realised that all those years before, we had witnessed a ghost. Since then I have spoken to a lot of people who live by the school and according to them it's well known among locals it was haunted by the ghost of a little girl in Victorian clothes. The two guys who witnessed her disappear- One locked himself in his bedroom and wouldn't talk about it, and the other had turned into a nervous wreck, they were both fucked in the head for a good while after.

Scientific explanation for ghost phenomena ( things moving, footsteps, eerie noises etc).

I attended a fascinating event a few years ago which was on the subject of ghosts and the causes of why we experience this phenomenon. I found the following on the blog COMSOL ( the annoying block feature stopped me adding the link yet again). I find it reassuring that these phenomena can be explained by science, because it removes fear if you know what's happening.

The below also explains why dogs will suddenly growl at thin air and act strange because they can hear and feel these acoustic vibrations ( and often more so than humans can). That's why dogs refuse to go to certain rooms in a house or freak out on the stairs! It's not because they've seen a ghost.

Quote

In the article “Things that Go Bump in the Night: The Physics of ‘False Poltergeists'” from a past issue of Sound & Vibration magazine, Roman Vinokur discusses common vibroacoustic phenomena that are mistaken for ghosts and supernatural entities.

If you ever wake in the middle of the night to a rumbling or groaning sound, think about Helmholtz resonance before burning sage or calling a medium. The most basic example of a Helmholtz resonator is a glass bottle with a narrow opening. When you hold the bottle up to your lips and blow perpendicular to its opening, it makes a humming sound.

A room with an open window or door can also act as a Helmholtz resonator. When turbulent airflow passes through an opening in the room, it excites Helmholtz resonance. The natural frequency of Helmholtz resonance depends on the room’s volume, thickness of the walls, and area of the opening. If this value falls within the range of infrasound (below 20 Hz), it can cause creepy sounds in the audible range — perhaps leading to a suspected poltergeist.

Infrasound can even vibrate our internal organs. This explains why people who recount paranormal experiences often describe feelings of nausea; anxiety; and most commonly, coldness.

Helmholtz resonance can be excited by sound waves propagating from an internal or external noise source. For example, thunder can reverberate in small rooms, which can be perceived as something more malicious than weather. The Sound & Vibrations article mentions a building that was rumored to be haunted. In actuality, the only thing haunting the building was revenge. The workers who built the apartment were scammed by the owner who hired them. To get revenge, the workers embedded empty glass bottles in the building’s roof. The bottles acted as Helmholtz resonators and wind passing through their openings at night caused tenants to hear roaring sounds at a frequency of 100 Hz.

Besides causing scary sounds, Helmholtz resonators also reduce noise in a wide range of applications. For instance, resonators are used in car exhaust systems because they can attenuate a specific and narrow frequency band. When a mean flow enters a typical exhaust system, a Helmholtz resonator attenuates the sound that is generated.

Watch any film about a haunted house  and there is a scene with creaking floorboards, rattling windows, doors that open and shut on their own, or some combination of phenomena. In the movies, a ghost is to blame, but the actual cause of such movement and noise isn’t as insidious, but instead due to mechanical resonance.

When the frequency spectrum of the source of a vibration lies in the infrasound range, it is inaudible (or barely audible) to the human ear. However, the movement caused by the vibration source is easy to hear. Basically, you can sometimes hear the effect of a vibration, but not the cause. This discrepancy is where ghost stories are born.

Going back to the example of a multistory building, rooms often contain equipment that moves or vibrates. Objects ranging in size from vacuum cleaners to air conditioning units to treadmills can cause noise on another level of a building. If a person hears the noise produced by vibrations but is too far away to hear the cause, they could suspect that a paranormal entity is afoot.

The way skyscrapers are arranged in cities can sometimes form street canyons, also called urban canyons, which manipulate sound propagation. The canyon effect neglects sound absorption in air and solid surfaces. When propagating in a canyon, a sound wave’s energy does not follow the usual distance law valid for open spaces (6 dB attenuation for each doubling of the distance, a spherical wavefront). In a canyon, the pressure amplitude decreases inversely to the square root of the distance from the noise source. So instead, for every doubling of the distance traveled, the energy is attenuated by only 3 dB (a cylindrical wavefront). Thus, sound can propagate over longer distances in canyons with less attenuation than in open environments.

Let’s say our multistory building has a wall canyon. (You can picture a wall canyon as the cutout center of a U-shaped building, sometimes called a courtyard building.) If a conversation is happening on a lower level of the building — in front of open windows, of course — the canyon effect causes the sound to propagate to a higher floor. The person on the upper level hears the conversation as if it is happening close to them, but don’t see anyone talking. Therefore, the wall canyon causes the perceived effect of the hushed whispers of a ghost.

Interestingly, negative temperature inversion can also produce something similar to the canyon effect. For instance, at night, the temperature of the ground cools faster than the air above. This causes sound to propagate for longer distances because of multiple reflections from the ground. What could possibly be scary about this effect, you ask? Perhaps hearing an owl hoot when there are no owls or trees around for miles…

Interesting! I wonder if this area had a lot of electromagnetic fields- this can cause people to see ghosts. I'd love a parapsychology group to do a study of ghost hot spots in the UK and see which show up with these fields. Some places have been studied and do have these fields which are known to cause haunting experiences in people.

To further add to this thread. I am totally fascinated by hauntings, strange occurrences and so on. I look for the scientific explanation always first. If science could prove spirits of the dead exist that would very cool!

So far the Hadron Collider says otherwise.

But there's that very odd experience Telly Savalas had years ago, where he met a man who'd been dead for a while!

If you want to google earth it, it was the caretakers garden on Stoneacre rd Woodhouse Park Wythenshawe. The school is The Willows primary school. If you do, where it says Stoneacre rd, we saw her in the garden to the right of the r and d. The Sherringham place I have no idea of the address, but my other experiences were at 113 Benchill rd Wythenshawe. I've since heard some very spooky shit about the house four doors to the right....When I lived down there I hated walking past that house and always walked on the opposite side of the road, just never liked the vibe of it. Didn't hear about the spooky stuff till years later.

If you mean the school, the only thing I remember hearing was off a guy who lived on Tayfield rd. He said that staff wont go to certain areas of the school alone. I think he said things get thrown or something. I also once worked with a girl who liived opposite the caretakers house and she told me some stuff she had heard too, but I can't remember the details..I know one of the local paranormal groups and have  given them a few leads, I'm pretty sure this was one of them. Not sure if they followed it up though..

Actually, come to think of it Kj35...are you getting mixed up? Poundwick was a high school which was two schools, higher and lower..The lower school was off Portway facing the CA youthclub. It was knocked down years ago. It's a housing estate now, my cousin lives on there. The higher is still there although it has been revamped, that's on the corner of Greenwood rd and Simonsway. It's now called the Manchester Enterprise Academy. The willows was called St Peters or something not long back.

Does sound like it could be caused by the acoustic vibrations explained in the article I posted on page 2.  This is far more common than people realise.

Fuck knows mate. I can only go off what we saw. I left out one or two things like she never made a sound even though she was no more than about 8 feet from us and the hedges were at waist level in those days so we got a good look at her. There was deffo something strange about the way she looked, ie- she was almost translucent, but we got the impression she interacted with us because the way she looked at us and she seemed very aware of us, so although it was weird, we didn't for one minute think she was a ghost. Like I said, we bumped into a copper and told him to go and have a look. Those guys who saw her, saw her at least ten years after and described exactly the same thing in the same place, only difference being she faded right in front of them. I can still picture the scene as clear as a bell.
