The Time Travel Thread

I thought I'd start a time travel thread, as I'm fascinated by the subject and wish I was a Time Traveller. To be able to go back in time to see how it was in different centuries and eras, like a tourist! But come back to my every day life, not to live in another time, you know like Gary Sparrow in Goodnight Sweetheart.

 

I'm often really longing to time travel. I've been like this ever since I can remember, as I'm a history nerd. 

 

To risk being seen as nuts, (but hey this is the DI forum, so if I can't discuss it here , where else could I?)  I did go back in time once to the 1840s for a few minutes.

 

If anyone wants to know about it,  I'll relate the experience. I think it was the Moqui Marble I was holding that sent me there. It was a really great experience! 

 

This thread is for a discussion on your thoughts on Time Travel. If you could go back in time, where would you go and why? 

 

Of course if you are a Star Trek fan ( as I am) time travel features a lot in it. Not just the first series with Captain Kirk, but TNG and DS9.

Assuming I would be going back in time just for curiosity and not to try and alter things, then probably to the height of the renaissance as a student to observe some of the great creations and the techniques of the creators.

 

I would love to see ancient civilizations at their peaks too, but it would be hard to pick one.

Yes, altering things does have a lot of ethical considerations! It'd be interesting to see the great artists at work.

 

Also, imagine seeing Stone Henge being built!

I would love to have lived my late teens / 20s and 30s through the 1980s / 1990s. Where ‘modern’ technology was to hand. But the scales were not tipped to the point they are now, where 99% of people are hooked to a mobile phone like crack. 
 

The trance and techno scene particularly interest me. I’d have loved to have been a fly on the wall during those years in Ibiza and seen tiesto etc live without a thousand people holding phone cameras above their heads like zombies. 
 

Yes, it’s a slightly hedonistic world I want to go to. But hey ho... that’s what this thread is for.

Thanks for starting this thread, pal. Time travel is something I have always been interested in as well. I too have often thought about what it would be like to travel to another time period (mainly the past). "Goodnight Sweetheart" is the series with Nicholas Lyndhurst, isn't it? I've seen some of that and know of it, but I've never actually watched the series.

 

I'd be very interested to hear about your experience. I am going to bed soon, but will definitely check back tomorrow... Before I shove off, though, I'll interject my own little time travel story. Now, I've been thinking about my experience a lot lately (perhaps because I wish to escape this current reality more now than I ever did before). Even before my spiritual and mental awakening, I always believed in my heart that what happened to me really did happen... Anyway, I don't want to keep anyone in suspense. Here goes.

 

A few years ago now, I went to bed one night...and time travelled. Well, I say time travelled, but I don't think that's what really happened... I think I crossed dimensions.

 

Now, I am reluctant to tell the tale in truth because it probably doesn’t live up to the brief description. In truth, what happened could very easily be seen as a dream. In fact, the moment I tell you this happened when I was asleep is probably enough for you all to start doubting already. But nevertheless, here goes...

 

Three years ago, on a seemingly normal night, I went to bed and fell asleep rather quickly. This in itself is unusual for me as I’m a bit of an insomniac. But moving on... I awoke feeling very refreshed and went to check my phone to observe the time, but it wasn’t there. In fact, I quickly noticed I wasn’t in my room at all. I was in someone else’s room.

 

Now, this is the bit that’s hard to convince you on...but at the time, this didn’t feel like a dream. I am no stranger to lucid dreaming and sleep paralysis, etc, but this was nothing like that. This felt 100% real. I remember feeling very afraid and quickly assumed I must have sleepwalked, but then realised that was practically impossible so started to think I’d been abducted for some insane reason.

 

But then...I heard the sound of this woman's voice and the sound of a door slamming. I couldn’t make out what it was, but it seemed as though she was saying hello to a pet in the other room. And I know this part might seem soppy, but I felt instantly calmed on hearing her voice. In like a trance, I slowly sat up and then I noticed a mirror right next to the bed to my left. I looked into the mirror and saw someone who didn’t look like me. I don’t know if you’ve ever heard of the 90’s show “Quantum Leap”, but I honestly thought I’d leaped into another man’s body like Sam Beckett did in the show.

 

But then when I looked closer, I realised it actually was me. I looked slightly older, my hair was darker and I had facial stubble, but it was still me. I could tell because of my eyes mostly. What I heard next confirmed it, because the woman then called my name and told me she was back from wherever it was she’d gone to.

I looked towards the door, and suddenly got the feeling that something was wrong regarding my time zone. It felt as though I was in the future. There were lights around the door, and the cupboard opened itself automatically when I took a step towards it. And then the door opened by itself...and there she stood.

 

On seeing her I felt this sudden pull. This need for her. It was an alien feeling to me. I’d never felt so drawn to a woman in all my life. She wasn’t really stunning looking, but she was very pretty and the way she looked at me (with slight bemusement mixed with tenderness) made me melt.

Suddenly, everything made sense to me on some kind of strange, inner level. It was as though the other version of myself that I’d “leaped” into half came back, because I suddenly felt like I knew her.

 

She continued to look puzzled, but I didn’t say anything. I just walked towards her and kissed her and she started to laugh. I began to trace my fingers up her back and she said “you know what that does to me” and giggled and then...well, skipping the gratuitous parts, we made love. And it just felt so real. So, so real. I know I’ve used the word before but it’s true. It was real.

 

When the lovemaking ceased, I got up and just looked at myself in the mirror and she just laid on her back asking what had suddenly got into me. I remember asking her the time, not really knowing what to say to her without freaking her out. She said it was six thirty. I rested my head against the wall and closed my eyes...and then suddenly I felt this jolt. I opened my eyes and I was back in my own hallway, my head resting against the wall at the top of the staircase.

 

For a while I did go through a period of denial about it, but now, with my whole world being turned upside down in the last few months... I now believe in my heart that it was real. And logic would have a hard time trying to explain otherwise to me when I really allow myself to think about it. Because trust me, I’m a master of sleep and know a lot about it, and such lucid dreams like that can only really happen in the REM stage of sleep, which is where the body is paralysed (and that’s how sleep paralysis happens), yet I had supposedly being sleepwalking. The two don’t add up.

 

I’ve never really been a romantic. I have been in love and I do date people (I'm seeing a woman at the moment), but deep down I’m a loner who enjoys casual relationships... But the way I felt that day, and a few days that followed was like I was heartbroken. I think that's why the denial kicked in, because it was a way of dealing with the pain of knowing I’d never see her again. Right now, in this moment...I honestly do believe I crossed over to another dimension.

 

And yes, on the bad days. On days like these, stressful times for everyone, I do find myself hoping when I close my eyes at night that I’ll wake up in her embrace. Who knows, maybe one day I will... Perchance to dream, eh?

My understanding of time travel can only happen in 2 places

If i could go back i'd do alot of things different and be there to witness certain events. Not going to go into much detail though

And I believe it has already been done. Have you delved into The Philadelphia Experiment? If not, check out Al Bielek on youtube, he was involved in it and also the Montauk Project.

 

Basically it was during WWII when the US and Germany were battling during a time when humanity were re-discovering technology that has been around for thousands of years that we were not aware of yet, and so the US government were trying to get ahead of Hitler and his U-boats and Enigma code machine which combined were allowing him to whoop the USA's arse.

 

The US government/MIC were trying to figure out how to cloak their battleships and were using the work of the late Nikola Tesla and also from Albert Einstein I think and a few other scientists, but long story short, the US Navy prepared a test ship, the USS Eldridge in the Philadelphia harbor, with a bunch of equipment and tested it to see if it would become invisible and in fact it did but it went a step further and actually traveled to the 80's. The US Navy/government inadvertently figured out how to time travel, but of course it was not without loss of life as when the ship reappeared in the harbor there are stories that Navy men were actually imbedded in the ship, the metal. Some lived but many died, and two men were actually caught in the 80's while the ship sat in a time loop.

 

The entire story is one of the major reasons why I believe Hollywood always exclude Nikola Tesla from movies and shows, because the man knew so much, he was so smart, that he literally could have allowed man to do anything they wanted without restriction, and of course that is a dangerous notion given man's lack of restraint in so many aspects.

 

I would love to go back in time, not so much I want to see the future since it's looking a little spooky at the moment haha, but I would certainly go back to the 80's, the 90's, the 60's, and even the 1600's and perhaps even further, and yes, I think a Delorean would be a sweet ride to do it in but not practical for bringing anything back since the Delorean lacks cargo space. lol

Have you ever listen to any of Art Bell's old broadcasts? He did many on time travel. Would even have a phone line open to only tine travelers, and randon nights.

If it were with the aid of a time machine, you could only go to anytime from the creation of the machine to the future.

 

So, once you made the machine, some future dude could step out. But, you and future dude could not go back in time to a point before the machine's creation.

 

Going backwards would alter time/events, no matter how careful you, Stewie and Brian are about things. Very terrible things could happen, like Dolly no longer having braces.

 

Going forward, like Fry, would not alter any time lines nor events anymore than anyone else in the future time, where you now work as a delivery boy.

 

I've been heading towards the future really slowly for quite a few years, myself. Figure I'd ease into it. So far, not liking it at all. Not at all like I was told it would be, back when I was a kid. No jet packs. Bad for the environment.

Thank you for your reply! You must be very young talking about time travelling to the 1990s! I don't mean this as a disparagement of you by the way; you see I'm 52 , I was in my late 20s in the 1990s, and turned 30 in 1998,  and it's a funny feeling when I think of the 1990s, for a number of reasons. One is that although I'm 52 I look 30 in the face, and I don't physically feel my age. Only my silvery grey/white hair gives my true age away (physically that is, mentally I'm way ahead of how I was when I was younger) which I dye with henna.

 

So thinking back to those days is kinda weird because in one way it doesn't seem that long ago, but then when I think of 1990 being 30 years ago--woahhh. It's true that the older you get the faster time seems to go; all us middle aged, 50 somethings experience this feeling at times. I remember getting my first mobile phone- a green screen motorola in 1999 ( on the one to one network) and was one of the first in my friend of uni students to get one. One day I got a text message off my friend Joe and didn't even know what it was. It puzzled me. He mentioned to me a few days later that he'd sent me a text message and I hadn't replied, and I said I didn't know what that was lol.

 

In my opinion they should have stopped there with mobile phones- sending text messages and making a call was great. That's all you need with them. And the quality of the call was very good- hardly ever did they cut out the way they do now. I had another one when I was living in Greece in 2000 and I used to phone my mother on it, and it sounded so clear, like I was phoning her  a few streets away, and she was all that way in northern England and I was in Greece.

 

Now when I call my father on his mobile, a few miles away the bloomin thing is always breaking up.

 

I hardly use mobiles for calls these days, I use my 1967 rotary dial phone, which is clear as a bell!

 

I wasn't into the techno scene; as you might have seen from my other posts, I'm a vintage nerd and like dance band music of the 1930s and 1940s and would LOVE to go back to the 1930s and go to those dance halls/jazz clubs and see those bands play live with all those excellent singers.

 

But I did go to out to pubs, cafes and days out and it was indeed nice before everyone had these stupid smart phones in their hands. Those days you'd see people with actual cameras on days out taking photos.

That was a very interesting experience you related to me! I had a similar "dream" myself a few weeks ago. I dreamt I was in a very modern and sleek house with a patio into a garden. I was a woman in her 20s ( I'm 52) with a handsome professional man with a lot of money, and we hadn't been married that long. It was night and we were going to bed, but I felt thirsty so went down to the kitchen to get a glass of water and I started looking around and at this point I realised something didn't resonate, like I knew that this was not me, not my reality. 

 

I know Quantum Leap! I loved that series. This is how felt in the dream- that I'd leapt into someone else. This was a young woman all mooney over a handsome guy- not me at all! I'm a bit of a loner too and not interested in men that way. I'm a confirmed singleton.

 

The fact you woke up out of bed on your feet does suggest to me that you had some kind of leap, or an astral travel. I think an astral travel is a good fit for your experience. In fact astral travel might be one way of time travel.

You are right - it was indeed very funny, but also very cleverly made. They got the contrasts between the 1940s and 1990s so spot on. It was a unique series.

I have heard of this indeed. I'll have to read more into it. Yeahhh-- part of me wants to see what it'd be like in 100 years, but it's a bit scary. I was only saying to my Mum on the phone a couple of days ago that I think 100 years on the tech would have moved on so far that we would feel more at home in the 1920s than we would in 2220. That it'd be so alien to our every day life that we'd fit better in the 1920s. I know I probably would.

 

I mean, I know how to use a dial phone, a wind up gramophone,  radios are there, there are buses and trams, electricity, newspapers for your news, even electric cookers for some folks. I know how to build a coal fire and so on.

 

But 2220- I can see it being some VR world. You'd go into your home with a chip in your finger, all laptops are obsolete and you swipe empty space for VR screens to access the internet. 

 

Everyone is walking round swiping and waving into thin air for their VR screens. A bit like those Black Mirror episodes.

 

I'd be lost in a world like that and not relate to it at all.

 

But Star Trek TNG- Yes I could cope with that. The holodeck would be awesome. And they don't have smart phones there, so no smart phone addiction. They still have social lives!

IMV it maybe possible to "see" the past but not travel back and be part of the past .

When we see the sun or the moon or stars we are looking at the past .

If we could travel to one of these stars and had a powerful enough telescope

then we could see the Earth as it was many many years ago . In theory !.

Just think of the stress and anxiety a majority of people are feeling as the "New Normal" is being impressed upon us.

 

Even a jump of a few years could be very jarring. Imagine if you had travel just three years ago to today's world. Tell me you wouldn't want to go back to before you came. I believe another ten years from now will be a very strange landscape.
