I can't be arsed to start posting regularly again if it looks like it can all disappear forever in the blink of an eye. Hopefully the new fangled forum will address these issues, however my optimism has waned in recent weeks and there hasn't been much information as to what's going on. Agreed ..thats why I'm dicking about posting minor stuff but am not doing any thing meaningful until i know a) its a safe solid base and b) it's being actually regurlarily backed up. I do know that many now have some kind of 'migration' facility, especially the commercial 'paid-for' ones, as they would like webmasters to move from 'free' platforms to paid-for software more easily Fundamentally, the forum 'front-end' sits on top of a database, and most forum softwares will have their databases structured in a similar fashion, so with the right tools and expertise, it should be possible to export one database, make any needed adjustments, and then import it into a new forum's database. What may not be possible to transfer over are things like account passwords, which would be encoded. So while it would be possible to also migrate user accounts, in order to access the new migrated forum, members would have to go through the 'lost password' process to reactivate their account. And yes, things would get tricky if current members had different or multiple accounts, as posts would be linked to that user's database ID. Most webmasters would just normally migrate one forum to another platform. Indeed, assuming that the "third' isn't vBulletin or IPB, we would then have the current "temporary" forum, the previous IPB forum and ye olde Vbulletin forum being Incorporated into new fangled forum. Being the selfish git that I am and not knowing that much about the vBulletin one it would probably be best to have that as a read only archive which would have made the migration a little bit easier. At this particular time, it’s a good place to come to while the (mostly) rest of the world is going bonkers. The camaraderie, the moral support, the advice, the occasional good natured piss taking helps a lot of people get by; to catch their breath before venturing back out to the asylum. Im no intellectual giant; just someone who’s interested in what’s really going on as opposed to what we are led to believe; trying to discern what’s what (though imho, the ‘truth’ is impossible to know); trying to make a difference to myself and in a small way, maybe this poor old world.
