Children were forced up chimneys in the 19th century and often died cleaning those chimneys. Most workers lived in filthy slums and were in very poor health. I've read Jack London's book about the people he met and he described how unhealthy they were and the despair and the humiliations of the workhouse. A man could do back breaking work for 20 years and when he became too ill to work anymore from overwork and ill health as a result of all those years was dumped in a workhouse to die.
