My entire view of media changed back in 2002 when I stumbled upon a website about how simple psychological cues can be and are used to make people see things that are not real and to not see thing that are right in front of their eyes. You can probably find this site or similar by searching for 'psychology' + count basketball Spoiler alert: if you read below this, you won't be able to take the test because my description will ruin your pre-given cues as to what you are supposed to see and so the test will not work. You are shown a video of a circle of basketball players, some in white shirts, some in black shirts. You are told they are going to pass the ball around and you are told to count the number of times a person wearing a black shirt catches the ball. The players start passing the ball around and you start counting. I believe the count gets to around 20 when the video ends. Then you are asked "Did you see the gorilla?" You say to yourself, "No, there was no gorilla." It then tells you to watch the video again, and "This time note the appearance of a gorilla." You scroll up, watch the exact same video again, this time watching for a gorilla. About 10 seconds into the video, a person dressed in a large, hairy gorilla suit walks across the court, breaks into the circle of players for a few seconds, then walks off the court in the other direction. Why did you not see the gorilla the first time you watched the video? What happened was, you just got mind-controlled into not seeing things that are clearly happening right in front of your eyes, and it all happens after a few simple instructions where the describer is telling you what to see. By focusing on what you are told you are going to see, your brain filters out other things going on as if they were invisible. This changed my life forever, because I now know that all different kinds of media, using very simple cues and instructions, makes people see and believe things that are purely fictitious. It's not just media, it's politicians and anyone of authority who is giving you instructions. Even if they're not doing it on purpose, just by telling you what you are going to see, your mind puts up filters that alter your reality. The same thing has been done is experiments where witnesses are told to count the number of green shirts in a group of people wearing red shirts and green shirts. When you watch the video you see people wearing red shirts and green shirts and you count. Then they tell you to watch the video again, but count the number of blue shirts. When you watch the video again you actually see that no one was wearing green shirts.
