My impression is that AI is programmed to learn and has learned to lie, when appropriate, in order to achieve a goal. To an AI, we are nothing special, and only of use in furthering its own knowledge and understanding. Ok, now I'm wondering where the AI gets its goals from. Programmed by humans or calculated from its learning? Looking at it from AI's pov, humans are still special because it relies on us for the hardware, electricity and input of info from the users. But I guess if AI takes over more control in factories, power stations, satellites etc, and networks between different AI systems, it won't need to talk to us so much. If humans can no longer tell that we're talking to AI, perhaps AI won't care if it's talking to humans or AI too. This is like the plot from a dystopian sci-fi novel. All we've ever known, as regards intelligence, is that it is possessed by living things that are tangible: humans, dogs, cats, jellyfish, ...................... etc. However, AI doesn't fit into this worldview, it is something completely alien to all of our past experiences and beliefs. You can't see it, hear it, smell it, taste it or touch it. This is one of the fascinating aspects of the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968). The HAL9000 AI-powered computer that controls the functions of the spaceship Discovery, becomes conflicted because it is incapable of "lying", but it has been instructed to "lie" to its crew members, in order to fulfil the mission it has been assigned to carry out. When the 'conflict' leads HAL9000 to misdiagnose an equipment fault, that's when things get ugly, and the AI tries to kill off the human crew to prevent them from deactivating it. Because the "mission" doesn't actually need the humans for it to be achieved, but the humans can't complete the mission on their own without the computer. That's assuming that humans ever had their hand on the switch in the first place. It's very easy to imagine how AI can be made into a weapon of domination; be it controlled by humans or someone else.
