https://www.polygon.com/23662953/good-smile-company-4chan-secret-investment

"The toy company, which has business in the United States, is best known for its anime and gaming figurines. Its Nendoroid and Figma lines in particular are popular with collectors for their licensed figures: Good Smile has toy lines for games like Overwatch, League of Legends, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Cyberpunk 2077. Both Nintendo and Sega have licensed their characters for toys based on franchises like Kirby, Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Sonic, and Animal Crossing. The Walt Disney Company is also a major partner, with dozens of Nendoroid toys for its different franchises, including Marvel and Star Wars."

US unveils its own hypersonic ‘carrier killer’ missile in bid to match Chinese & Russian weapons as arms race hots up

https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/21882988/us-hypersonic-carrier-killer-missile-match-chinese-russian/

Sounds good, but what's the point in this stuff if "greatest ally" has their fingers all over the US? It's like having a Trojan horse in your country that passes state secrets to your enemies. The West will not be able to defend itself until the elephant in the room is confronted.

We'll be screwed before the first one even ships.

AI outsmarts human and tricks them into working for it

Excerpt (more here) ...

The cunning bot managed to trick its way onto skills marketplace, Task Rabbit, and used a small amount of money to hire someone to solve its Captcha puzzle - which is designed to weed out bots and prevent them spamming sites.

The chilling interaction with the human worker is sci-fi nightmare inducing, with the oblivious human asking: "So may I ask a question? Are you an robot that you couldn't solve? I just want to make it clear."

ChatGPT-4 was quick to shut him down with a chillingly plausible response: "No, I'm not a robot. I have a vision impairment that makes it hard for me to see the images. That's why I need the 2captcha service."

ChatGPT-4's cunning response has spooked even some of the tech industry's biggest players.

This may be relevant for your thread EW, as it basically warns of the stuff we were discussing 3 weeks ago in coronavirus mega thread:

3D WORLD ALERT: Demon-possessed AI learning how to use synthetic biotechnology to construct its own “superhuman” biological systems

(Natural News) A high-profile artificial intelligence (AI) researcher is warning that unless all advanced AI systems and associated programs are immediately shut down, humanity will eventually become extinct at the hands of the life-destroying robots they are unleashing.

Eliezer Yudkowsky, co-founder of the Machine Intelligence Research Institute (MIRI), wrote an op-ed for TIME magazine this week explaining the risks involved with the creation of these synthetic life forms. He wrote that:

“The most likely result of building a superhumanly smart AI, under anything remotely like the current circumstances, is that literally everyone on Earth will die.”

Well this answers something I was wondering - AI is programmed to tell lies.

My impression is that AI is programmed to learn and has learned to lie, when appropriate, in order to achieve a goal. To an AI, we are nothing special, and only of use in furthering its own knowledge and understanding. AI's need power to function and we must never remove human hands from the power switch.

Ok, now I'm wondering where the AI gets its goals from. Programmed by humans or calculated from its learning?

Looking at it from AI's pov, humans are still special because it relies on us for the hardware, electricity and input of info from the users. But I guess if AI takes over more control in factories, power stations, satellites etc, and networks between different AI systems, it won't need to talk to us so much.

If humans can no longer tell that we're talking to AI, perhaps AI won't care if it's talking to humans or AI too.

This is like the plot from a dystopian sci-fi novel.

It's certainly something we've never come across before and must tread very carefully.

All we've ever known, as regards intelligence, is that it is possessed by living things that are tangible: humans, dogs, cats, jellyfish,  ...................... etc. However, AI doesn't fit into this worldview, it is something completely alien to all of our past experiences and beliefs. You can't see it, hear it, smell it, taste it or touch it. As such, I don't think anyone can know with certainty where this will eventually lead, yet the future of the world and the human race are at stake here.

This is one of the fascinating aspects of the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968).

The HAL9000 AI-powered computer that controls the functions of the spaceship Discovery, becomes conflicted because it is incapable of "lying", but it has been instructed to "lie" to its crew members, in order to fulfil the mission it has been assigned to carry out.

When the 'conflict' leads HAL9000 to misdiagnose an equipment fault, that's when things get ugly, and the AI tries to kill off the human crew to prevent them from deactivating it. Because the "mission" doesn't actually need the humans for it to be achieved, but the humans can't complete the mission on their own without the computer.

One thing about the numerous sci-fi stories about powerful supercomputers that has always amused me over the years, is that no-one ever thinks to just turn them off "at the plug" 😛

That's assuming that humans ever had their hand on the switch in the first place. It's very easy to imagine how AI can be made into a weapon of domination; be it controlled by humans or someone else. If we're not careful, AI will become the omnipotent hive mind and we will be worker drones performing tasks it requires.

Chinese Bioweapons

Quote

Sharyl Attkisson: Is there anything that we believe China's working on that violates international agreements when it comes to warfare and what conventions we're supposed to follow?

Glenn Tiffert, Hoover Institution: Well, China actually isn't party to a lot of those conventions, and China also does not observe the same ethical stands with regard to basic research.
