I'm not getting into semantics. I'm aware that I am not just my body, and that my soul will be long gone when I am dead, HOWEVER, I still think burying and cremation are scary and make my skin crawl and obviously I will need to choose an option whilst I am still alive in this body.

I've just been reading about this and I'm so shocked- I had absolutely no clue about it- so thought I'd share the info on here.

It's literally like something out of a horror sci-fi movie.

I just presumed, as you do, that if you'd agreed to be a donor (or your family agree on your behalf), then after you'd died they would remove the organs, pack them with ice or whatever and that's how it went.

Well, no!!

They have to keep you alive in order to remove the organs- but because you've been pronounced medically dead (brain stem dead) they don't have to use any anaesthesia- they just inject a muscle relaxant to ensure you don't move!! Once the heart has been removed then you're obviously dead, but it needs to keep beating up to the point of removal.

So what are you giving up when you agree to organ donation (or don't specifically elect to 'opt out' as in Wales)? Your organs, of course—but also much more. You’re also giving up your right to informed consent. Doctors don’t have to tell you or your relatives what they will do to your body during an organ harvest operation because you’ll be dead, with no legal rights.

Bloody hell...I am currently on the NHS website frantically trying to opt out. No way am I taking the chance i'd be able to 'feel' anything without anesthesia before I pop off.

Oh come on kitkat, give us yer spleen, you dont need that. This would be a rib tickler if it wasnt so horrific. I opted out in july before it came into "force". The idea theres people in power who have assumed a right over my body parts that I have to tell them no to is a dark dark cloud. The only silver lining I see is the complete upside downess of what they are calling law. Incorporeal rights like my privacy swiped by the L.C.B. and you could say, well the powers that be must be idiots who cant protect us if they cant see the theft of incorporeal rights. If I was to claim a pre-existing right to their jaguars, they would recognise their own corporeal rights in a second but what about my toys? They make the law, the law allows the LCB to steal our stuff anytime they please. Our organs? No ones that stupid.

 

Well done for opting out. If you need help getting rid of their tracking software on an android message me. You think straight!

What site? Theres an nhs site with a vested interest in making life difficult keeping your organs and a gov.uk site trying to cover its arse by allowing opt outs from the legislation itself.

Is the NHS selling organs removed in hospitals to private patients and the amounts? The information above about keeping people alive to remove organs sounds horrific. I had an old relative that planned to donate his body to medical science (as he had specialist heart operations) until told from a doctor friend what is often done with medical students training so declined.

I am bumping this thread in light of the video below which has been posted on the DI headline page today.

 

Neonatologist, Dr Paul A. Byrne, speaks about how brain death is a lie and how, during organ harvesting, patients are still alive. He says that unconsciousness does not mean a lack of consciousness, just that we do not observe consciousness. Whether a person shows consciousness or not does not indicate whether they are alive or dead. And, even where a patient cannot demonstrate pain, it doesn't mean they cannot feel pain.

 

Brain death was introduced, he says, as a way to get organs as they have to come from a person who is alive. Organs begin to die within minutes of true death - the cessation of circulation and respiration - and the heart is always removed last. Prime donors are aged 16 to 30 and he claims the medical profession will do everything they can to get their organs.

 

Recovery after being declared brain dead is also possible.

There are methods like sky burial too. In sky burial bodies are cut up and the flesh fed to vultures. Sometimes the bones are used for crafting items as the physical remains are regarded as useless to the spirit.
