On the face of it, the NHS seems like a very attractive idea. It was supposed to provide a genuine service to people, so that nobody had to worry about meeting medical costs. It was never free. Everybody of age had to pay into it through the tax system. Unfortunately, it has grown into a monster, acting as a sponge for depressives and hypochondriacs who would otherwise have to 'pull themselves together' - harsh, I know, but at the same time, is it kinder to be a bit firmer and not molly-coddle people? Or is the answer better help that doesn't involve recourse to GPs and prescribed drugs? Its staff are one of the world's largest workforces and it has become a political force in its own right. Due to mass immigration, there are too many free riders. Is the NHS now sustainable? A question for another thread, I know, but Covid-19 has brought the chickens home to roost. Have NHS staff overreached themselves and jeopardised the future of the NHS with all this hysteria?
