Let's take a big, long moment to think about this.  The media should be holding the government to account for these stats, and not endlessly churning out graphs.

Covid pandemic drives 163% rise in restaurant job losses in UK in 2020

Data also reveals that branch closures by hospitality firms increased by more than 75%

UK restaurants and casual dining firms recorded almost 30,000 job losses in 2020 as the Covid-19 pandemic drove a 163% jump in redundancies.

As a result of the tier adjustments that came into effect in England on New Year’s Eve, 22,082 restaurants are in tier 4 and are all closed except for takeaway, and 4,946 are in tier 3. Only five restaurants in the Isles of Scilly remain open for diners, according to the real estate adviser Altus Group.

Yep and then you have all the suppliers , drinks wholesalers etc. Redundancy back in September and the vast amount of my experience and contacts involves trade sales to the U.K. On-trade (pubs, restaurants etc) . Personally , I have very little chance of getting back into this industry for the foreseeable. Indeed , there is currently no industry of note.

Happy (sic) New Year everyone...

Had Christmas "off" so just returning to the forum and apologies if someone has already posted this...

See the link below... of Course, with Mr Gates involved, you'd expect nothing less -it involves an operating system and licenses that he can sell over and over.... something he's got quite good at over the years...

We have already had curfews for pubs and restaurants. What's next a proper police state curfew thrown into the mix with people fleeing home before 10pm, like in parts of Europe?  From The Daily BS Express -

Boris Johnson considers national curfew as 'no question' tougher measures coming

DOWNING STREET has refused to rule out introducing a nation-wide curfew in a desperate bid to curb rising coronavirus infections.

PUBLISHED: 12:52, Mon, Jan 4, 2021 | UPDATED: 13:31, Mon, Jan 4, 2021

This morning the Prime Minister said there was "no question" stricter rules will be introduced "in due course" to help suppress new cases of the virus. Boris Johnson held a meeting of his "Covid-O" committee this morning to look at the latest data and consider what steps are needed to cut infections.

TYRINGHAM, Mass. (AP) — British diplomat Brian Urquhart, an early leader of the United Nations who played a central role in developing the U.N. practice of peacekeeping, has died, according to his family. He was 101.

Urquhart’s son, Thomas, confirmed he died at his home in Tyringham, Massachusetts, on Saturday but didn’t provide a specific cause, the New York Times reported.

Urquhart, born in Bridport, England in 1919, served in British military and intelligence during World War II before becoming the second official hired by the U.N. after its formation in 1945. He went on to be a principal adviser to the first five U.N. secretary-generals.

I seem to remember a physics teacher telling me very early on at school that percentages above 100 are mathematically nonsensical.  He wasn't quite strictly right about that - you can use percentages above 100, but I understand what he was getting at.  It's apt to mislead and can be innumerate and is often used for the purpose of misrepresenting something.

I have heard the Scots are careful with money, but not with time.  😆   10 hours notice for a national lockdown is taking the slash with the people of Scotland on top of the lockdown itself.  England will not be far behind Scotland, Boris is just waiting for his instructions to be faxed through.

Regarding the article above, it says 163% jump in redundancies.  I understand why it's expressed in this way, but to me this encourages innumeracy - especially when, as here, it's expressed confusingly in the article as both an increase on the n figure and also an increase of the n figure.  I think they mean the latter, so that the number of redundancies in 2020 is 163% of the 2019 total (i.e. a decimal factor of 1.63 of the total in 2019), but somebody could equally read it as a 163% increase on 2019, which is completely different.

For me, it would be mathematically clearer if it was expressed as a percentage increase with raw figures included, so that you could work it out for yourself to verify it.

For instance, if redundancies in Year 1 were 100,000 and in Year 2 were 150,000, this journalist would say that Year 2 has had a 150% rise/increase in redundancies, whereas I would say that is a 50% increase (i.e. 50,000/100,000x100).

Part of the problem for the Scots is that they never had a true devolution of power.  Labour just re-created the Westminster system in Edinburgh.

Schools will also remain closed to most pupils until the start of February at the earliest.

So, that means, schools won't be going back in February, unless everyone is vaccinated.

  • Stay at home and only leave for an essential purpose, ie for caring responsibilities or essential shopping
  • Work from home unless it really is not possible
  • Businesses must look at moving as much as possible to being done from home
  • If you are shielding and you cannot work from home, it is advised that you do not work at all
  • Frequency of outdoor exercise is not being limited
  • However, the rule on outdoor gatherings changes from six people to a maximum of two people from two households. Children under 11 do not count
  • If you live in a Level 4 area you cannot leave home unless it is essential. No one is allowed to travel into or out of Scotland unless it is for an essential purpose
  • Communal worship cannot take place but 20 people can attend a funeral and five can attend a wedding

What's the thoughts on hand sanitizer.

My kids are being made to slap it on every time they go in and out of the classroom. I can't stand the stuff.

I am sure I read somewhere that it causes infertility, cancer and other nasties. I am not sure it will wash if I say to school I don't want my kids using it.

A glance online tells me around 500k people die in the UK each year.

Forgive the rounded figures & quick man maths, but if the population's around 70m & life expectancy is 70-odd, this figure doesn't seem quite right.

Am I missing something?
