Email is different and the current thinking is the message must get through which means that it could go through a server that does not honour the TLS request and can forward the message in plain text where it can be read by man in the middle attacks if not the server it goes through, but if you encrypt the message itself then you are as protected as you can be.

Tor, but it depends who controls the nodes. The Onion network is basically a collection of drug dealers, peados, and FBI honey holes. It makes you glow like the Sun. A VPN is okay, but will only do so much, and greatest ally has their fingers in a lot of them. You have to know that you can trust the VPN provider with your data too. Running things in a virtual machine can help a bit. There are other decentralized services where people hang out, but they're probably pretty dead, and they probably also make you glow because of the criminality that they attract. Open source operating systems make sense too. Nothing is perfect, but as long as you're not inciting violence, and you're using unregistered burner SIMs, and don't use any real details online, then you're probably too much hassle for the average federal agent. If they want you, they will find you, but you can probably buy yourself time by taking basic measures.

Is a virtual machine like a copy of a computer that hides your real OS? I literally don’t have a clue, it’s all hackable on my opinion

Wireless is easy to intercept, cables not so much, they’d have to physically jack in. The old internet was cables and as you said- modems with that now nostalgic sweet sound. Take a look at mesh networking, as an example, self configures and easy to maintain obviously the cost of running it is down to where the nodes are plugged into i.e you, but then that cost is also shared with all the other nodes where they are plugged into. Now i am not suggesting that this will replace the current net as it stands, but it is sufficient for general communications in your locality with like minded people who wish to stay informed, Edited February 3 by sock muppet forgot link

I would assume that you would have to jailbreak and root the phone. You're probably still better off with IoS than Android though. Yeah, it uses emulation to run a separate computing environment. How separate is debatable though, especially with backdoors at hardware level. 7 minutes ago, LastOneLeftInTheCounty said: I literally don’t have a clue, it’s all hackable on my opinion Yeah, agreed.
