If I sign an informed consent form prior to undergoing a procedure and some doctor decides it's a great opportunity to inject me with an experimental drug, assuming I survived, I'd bankrupt the doctor and the hospital. He'd be begging for pennies at the side of the road for the rest of his life.

 

Imagine going in for a minor operation to remove, say, a bone spur from your ankle. You sign the consent form and they put you under. The surgeon comes along, takes away the bone spur but, at the same time, he decides to remove a couple of moles from your cheek because he thinks they look unsightly. That surgeon and his employers would be on the hook for a lot of money. There's no immunity for a doctor who unilaterally decides to inject a comatose patient with poison.
