I am not sure where the CIA world fact book got its information. Could just be estimates based on types of data that they have available related to consumption or something like that. I also have doubted these numbers myself as it would fit in to their agenda to over estimate the amount in the population over time. Looking at the the immigration figures and birth certificates, it does seem a bit high to say 70 million in the UK. Also you could use mobile phone registration data but that would include duplicates and other noise and also not include children or people who don't own a phone. I think they probably have done census is most countries, i know they do one in SA but in developing countries that is even more difficult because many people in informal settlements don't have a registered address.
