It really does change the dynamic. When you call them 'officer' , 'sir' or 'xyz' you formalise an ego role play. Try it... It makes you feel more chilled and doesn't play into their game of 'us' and 'them'. After all we are all brothers and sisters in one big family. The system tries to make us forget that . If you ever get a visit from them..refer to them as that (Bros and sisters) .and do things like offer them a cup of tea and some bikkies.
