About 4 days ago - I was up late as usual, stood on doorstep smoking, looked up and observed a contrail being laid in the moonlight, About 1.5 hour later went out again and observed it had spread widely. Went out again an hour later for some firewood and it started rapidly and heavily hailing. Prior to that the sky had been relatively clear.
