My rules of thumb have always been, 'contradiction is the hallmark of a hoax' and 'beware of illusions'. After a long enough period of time worshipping these doctrines you develop instincts that light up like fireworks when big deals like covid that thrust the worlds treasury vault doors wide open for ransacking suddenly and always so conveniently arise.
