In December 2015, OpenAI was founded by Sam Altman, Elon Musk, Ilya Sutskever, Greg Brockman, Trevor Blackwell, with Sam Altman and Elon Musk as the co-chairs. $1 billion in total was pledged by Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, Elon Musk, Reid Hoffman, Jessica Livingston, Peter Thiel, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Infosys, and YC Research.^[14][15] The actual collected total amount of contributions was only $130 million until 2019.^[10]

The podcast was hosted enthusiastically by Lex Fridman who rose to prominence in 2019 after Elon Musk praised his study which concluded that drivers remained focused while using Tesla's semi-autonomous driving system. Following his Tesla Autopilot study, Fridman was flown to Tesla offices for an interview with Elon Musk.

In 2014, Fridman was hired by Google to continue his dissertation work on the use of AI for identity authentication, but left the company after only six months stating that he prefers the "chaos of research and the academic environment".^[9] In 2015, he moved to MIT's AgeLab to work on "psychology and big-data analytics to understand driver behavior."^[3]

 

As of 2023, he is a research scientist at the MIT Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems (LIDS).

 

Fridman was born in the Soviet Union and grew up in Moscow. He is Jewish. His father, Alexander Fridman, is a plasma physicist and professor at Drexel University.

 

His PhD dissertation, Learning of Identity from Behavioral Biometrics for Active Authentication, was completed under the advisement of engineering educators Moshe Kam and Steven Weber and sought to "investigate the problem of active authentication on desktop computers and mobile devices".^[10]

 

Moshe Kam is an Israeli-American electrical engineer.  In 2011, he served concurrently as the 49th president and CEO of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers). Kam grew up in Tel Aviv, Israel. Between 1976 and 1983 he served in the IDF (Israel Defense Forces).

Funder Jeff Dean

 

Since 2018, he has been the lead of Google AI. He was appointed Alphabet's chief scientist in 2023 after a reorganization of Alphabet's AI focused groups.

 

He worked at the WHO's Global Programme on AIDS, developing software for statistical modeling and forecasting of the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
