The Power Station, "We Fight For Love" ;

Interesting factoid: When Robert Palmer left Duran Duran's Power Station Project, Michael Des Barres was chosen to replace him on lead vocals.

Michael Des Barres is also an actor best known as MacGyver's arch nemesis, Murdock, in that 7 season series and he hosts a very popular podcast called 'Little Steven's Underground Garage'.

American Bandstand 1987 interview with Michael Des Barres ;

Des Barres also founded the band, 'Checkered Past' in 1982. I believe he is in his 70s and still very active.

Sleepy LaBEEF (Thomas Paulsley LaBeff) Rockabilly guitarist and deep-voiced singer, probably the only rockabilly basso profundo. Family name originally LaBoeuf; he was the last of ten children in a farming family, got his nickname at school because of droopy eyelids. Sang in church, heard hillbilly music and R&B on the radio, traded a rifle for a guitar at 14.

Alan Jackson, successful neo-trad, country singer of the 90s, songwriter and guitarist. Down-to-earth-performer worked in various jobs (drove fork-lift at K-Mart, waited on tables), moved to Nashville in '85 and nearly starved working small clubs. Demo tape landed him first country act signing to Arista Nashville in '89; debut single 'Blue Blooded Woman' followed by chart-topping 'Here In The Real World' and a long run of hit albums and singles.

Van Heusen, Jimmy, songwriter, one of the most successful of all, and the only person, someone said, Frank Sinatra actually wanted to be. Son of a building contractor, he played cornet and/or announced on the radio as a student, chosing his stage name from a shirt advert (but Chester Babcock lived on as the Bob Hope character in the Hope/Crosby 'Road' movies, all but one of which had songs written by Van Heusen, and in the sly Sinatra aside, "This one's for Chester"). He played piano in a brothel, studied at Syracuse U. , first successful song was 'It's The Dreamer In Me'.

Playing Van Heusen's composition is Martha Tilton, "It's The Dreamer In Me" ;

Billie Holiday (Elinore Harris) jazz singer. She heard records by Bessie Smith as a child, then Louis Armstrong was her biggest influence, but she owed little to earlier artists: she was the first and is still regarded as the greatest of jazz singers, if the essence of jazz singing is to make the familiar sound fresh, and to make lyric come alive with personal meaning. Her father, Clarence Holiday, played banjo and guitar for Fletcher Henderson.

The speakeasies did not have sound systems; she sang the same song at each table, improvising each chorus; John Hammond heard her and produced her first records.

Todd Rundgren, Philadelphia PA singer, songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist. Inspired by the British Invasion and by earlier groups like The Ventures, he acquired a guitar and formed Woody's Truckstop; left within a year to display burgeoning talents in the Nazz, named from a Lord Buckley routine. He is one of USA pop's enigmatic all-rounders.

"There is a very small village in Wales in the Black Mountains near England called Hay-on-Wye. In the early 1960s a young man names Richard Booth opened a secondhand bookshop, eventually bought an old castle for the same purpose, and soon other entrepreneurs did the same. By 1988 the Annual Hay Festival began to showcase the wares of the town's booksellers, primarily antiquarian and used-book dealers. Today it is known worldwide as "The Town of Books," and it's no wonder: this little hamlet of 1,300 people currently boasts 39 bookshops."
