Jim Jones: The JonesTown MASSACRE!…

I remember this happening. I moved to San Francisco not long after and the shock waves were still reverberating around the city. The Peoples' Temple was still standing then, though empty. Apparently, Jones fooled a lot of people in city government. He had pretty much open access to the Mayor's office and he was seen as a force for good. He fed a lot of hungry mouths and sheltered a lot of homeless people. He recruited lawyers to do pro bono work for the poor. Who knows what tipped him over the edge but things got very disturbing in Guyana even during the construction phase of Jonestown. The arrival of Leo Ryan was the catalyst, so they say, but ruling by fear only gets you so far and maybe he was afraid of an internal uprising. Either way, it cost a lot of innocent lives.
