A full "narco-state", eh? Kind of like Mexico then, which no one seems to care about. The term "narco-state" is a Western PTB term, which is reserved for nations that have broken free of their puppet governments. Like with Fidel Castro in Cuba. Not that I am suggesting the proverbial 'good guys' would be running Ecuador, if the current government was overthrown, and all would be rosy. The people probably would end up better off though.

'Ecuador city tries to return to normal after gang horror.'

'As the days pass from the most terrifying experience in its modern history, it is beginning to look like Ecuador is returning to normality. The risk is that it is actually hurtling towards an entrenched armed conflict, and moving ever closer to becoming a full "narco-state".'

It is not a narco state at all...lol spent quite a bit of time there recently...

They don't grow or consume cocaine...

What happened was the last president was weak, potentially bribed who knows. But didn't take law and order seriously. Typically Ecuador is the safest country in south America.....the people are peaceful and respectful...

The mexican and Colombian cartel saw the weakness and decided to use a couple of the port cities as a trade route for cocaine.

The people were disgusted and ousted the president and voted in one who was willing to kick out the foreign cartels...

So they declared war. As a backlash some of the gangs have retaliated in a handful of the major cities and the army are trying to kick em out....

Hardly narco or wild west state like people believe..

I was there recently just before this debacle and it was far safer than UK. And once this battle is over wil likely be like that again..

Most of Ecuador currently are not experiencing problems....

no one grows cocaine, they grow coca and some coca is grown in ecuador and peru and places outside columbia but it may then be processed into cocaine elsewhere

i was in ecuador in the 90's and quito had a bit of a rep as being potentially risky. I didn't have any problems there but i did get bodily frisked flying out of it

Ecuador's Homicide Rate Is Skyrocketing

Monday, Jan 15, 2024 - 10:45 AM

Homicide rates are skyrocketing in Ecuador with official figures recording a death count of 4,800 in 2022.

This is according to data from the Ecuadorian Ministry of Interior, published by the Rio de Janeiro based think tank, the Igarapé Institute.

Additionally, as Statista's Anna Fleck notes, according to the Ecuadorian government’s latest estimates though, violent deaths are reported to have soared to 8,008 in 2023, indicating that the situation is by now significantly worse than the figures currently displayed by the institute.
