Personality

I wish to explore the topic of personality.

The etymology of the word persona comes from the Latin, to mask.

Mask what? Anyone on the spiritual circuit will tell you, what you really are is God/consciousness whatever word suits.

How does this relate to ego?

Ego etymology is "I" that is the false I. And many people will refer to the ego as the "negative" aspect of the personality. The part that limits you etc.

My experience, is that ego and personality are actually the same. Personality is the mask of the true I, giving impression to the world of this false I, being the true, I.

This is quite difficult to digest because we have been brought up to think that personality is I. With all the likes, dislikes, judgements etc. But the whole personality mask can be traced back to your response to the world, peers, trauma etc normally at a young age.

If we talk about transcending ego, we must also talk about living without personality, or at least the programmed, response one.

I ponder what life looks like for the one who has fully undressed? Do you consciously create a personality? Or we become more like neutral functions of the one?

Yeah

and there is the possibility of the brain filtering out reality to give us a more functional version of reality .

So does personality  interact /reflect this more  limited view of reality or do we harbour a deeper personality somewhere else ?

I think Aldous Huxley( despite his other notoriety)in "doors of perception" called it "mind at large" or he referred to water and ice

But is this personality too or a reflection of itself ?

Perhaps personality is transferable to other lifetimes as was often believed .

Good question.

In my experience, personality largely formed in the formative years up to 9 years old or so. Usually as a response to the environment.

This starts from the beginning when a new born baby knows no other. It is the mother and society that gives it a sense of self and with it the sense of separation is born. Then things are copied from peers and responses to trauma etc.

These then produce activities, thoughts and feelings which we identify as self, or our personality.

There are theories that some kind of soul may harbor some sort of personality or flavour. And it may be true. But I haven't found any evidence to prove this type of theory
