Grumpy Owl
In between working outside in my garden today, I was also doing a bit of work from home, which required me to stop my computer going to 'sleep' so that certain tasks could be completed. On going into the system Power settings, I saw this which to be honest I had never seen or noticed before: And once again, my first thought was "oh fuck off!" Now as it happened, I bought this PC a couple of years ago to replace my ageing mini-tower unit, and it was one of these compact little ASRock 4X4 boxes: As well as the smallest PC I have ever owned, it is probably the most energy-efficient too, which I was quite pleased about - for most day-to-day tasks it consumes very little power, but when pushed it can handle the kind of stuff I do for work. I don't appreciate being lectured about 'carbon footprints' thank you. Where does this end though? It's another 'behavioural change' exercise, where people are 'nudged' into following 'recommendations' in order to save the planet by reducing your carbon footprint. If I need my PC to stay on, then tough shit, that's my decision. Edited May 27 by Grumpy Owl
Anti Facts Sir
Cheeky beggars. I didn't even know there was a Windows 11, which shows you how up to date I am with this crap. I'm noticing it with electronic equipment, things seem to try and go into standby mode every 5 minutes or decide to switch themselves off because "no activity has been detected for X amount of time". Which can be a right pain in the arse if it's the HD recorded connected to the telly.

I always use the control panel version of things - not the new settings - when at all possible. Mine are all set to stay on all the time - I am quite capable of pressing the off button for the screen if I need to. But if the disk or CPU power down, it's not going to run an unattended backup is it - or update its AV, etc?

But my hubby use comp for gaming and it burns pounds like an oven... WHat I can say about Windows? Well... My next laptop will be with Linux... I don't use it for gaming, don't need fancy software and don't want to be scared of cyber attacks...
SimonTV
That is shocking. I think Windows 10 will be my last Windows OS. I recently upgraded my mobile and it has Android 13 and it is awful, makes me want to send the phone back. I see this trend now, the mobile and desktop operating systems will just get more and more woke and controlled and restricted as time goes on. An example of this is that now if you want to join a dating site you have to verify you age with google and to do that you have to give them your bank details or passport, linking your google account to your real ID. This is a back door way to force digital ID. Sure it was sold with good intentions of preventing under 18s from joining dating sites. I didn't even think that was a major problem, mean while tiktok is still unrestricted though. Not that I use tik tok or dating apps.

It is only shocking because people fall for this bullshit. Your PC does not physically 'emit carbon', that is materially wrong. (Where are the fact checkers when you need them? ) Also I'm constantly being reminded by my electricity supplier (EDF) that all their electricity is "100% renewable", so what's the big (green) deal? If you can legally get married at 16, why do you need to be 18 to date? Sadly, I need Windows for work but it has got steadily worse over the years, now 2000 with the USB support of XP would be great. I have an Android 4 phone - luckily it doesn't do anything clever like read QR codes - now who the F*k would follow a link to something that they could see the destination of? QR codes are just such a dangerous idea. All you have to do it change a few pixels...

Yea the dating age restriction makes little sense, if you get your parents to add their bank card in then google verify your account age. Once verified you can create a fake profile on a dating site and nothing stopping that. So realy doesn't stop fake profile or underage joining dating sites. The dating sites also police the profiles and if they saw underage they would delete it. Personally I think it has nothing to do with protecting children from dating sites, and everything to do with making sure google accounts are linked to real people with a digital ID.
