Gas, leccy or water? I had a water meter fitted but didn't actually have a say because it was at the foot of my drive which is off the property. Always ignored gas and electricity although they always left it to me to arrange an appointment so I never bothered

webtrekker
Yeah, I've had that text too and had never arranged a bloody appointment. I contacted them and gave them a piece of my mind. Tell them you want your prepayment meter fixed and NOT replaced with a 'smart' meter. 1

I've heard of scams where people use a ruse to get a quick look inside your home to see if there's anything worth pinching, your level of security etc, ready for burglaring at a later time. I'm also wondering if there's a way to deactivate the smartness of a smart meter if you can't help having one . An off switch, changing your wifi password etc? Or if all else fails, wrapping it in tinfoil lol! I don't have one, some years ago they were bugging me like crazy because there were govt targets but they have given up with all the phone call etc. I don't think my conventional excuse for not having one still holds water, because at one time they were installing outdated smart meters which stopped working when you switched suppliers.

Contact British Gas and tell them you did not consent and you want the appointment cancelled, and tell them that if an engineer does turn up then they will be turned away. The router remains the property of your broadband provider and so they can ask for it back if you end your contract with them. Depends on your provider really, I know that Virgin Media like to have their equipment back, however I still have my PlusNet Hub router from my old property, they never asked for it to be returned. Smart meters don't connect to the internet through your wi-fi, they use 4G/5G mobile network.

Campion
I've started getting emails from my supplier saying the electric meter needs to be changed to a smart meter because it's come to the end of its "certification period" and passes the buck to OFGEM and the Electricity Act 1989 for why it needs replacing. I've just ignored it so far and perhaps they'll get bored with me, otherwise I'll ask them for a new non-smart meter and see where that leads. To be fair my meter is pretty old, it has wheels going opposite directions and I suspect that "certification periods" didn't exist when it was made. Perhaps they've just been made up to twist our arms to getting smart meters. Anyway they've been accepting my own readings for years without a visit from the meterman like we used to get in the olden days, so they can't be that worried about it going inaccurate with age. Occulus5
Off topic slightly but staying with energy, but has anyone here done what Richard D Hall has done to his home by cutting off from his utlilty company (ie gas and electric) and making his house "off grid" where has modified his home and collects rain water and filters it for his home?. It's amazing what he has done but he clearly has the skills and know how (and probably help from other people). For some people, including myself, they don't have those skils. I would love to make my home like his but sadly I don't have the know how, plus nonone I know would ever want to help me with such a project, they would think I'm mad; I could just see their reaction "Hey mate, I have to pay for gas and electricity so why don't you you tight arse?" lol. Richard hasn't done this for fun he's doing it for a reason.
Tommy Inch
I have a prepayment meter and the cards do not work. An engineer keeps adding emergency credit but now stating its “because i have refused a smart meter”. I have requested that a credit meter be installed and willing to pay but am told to repeatedly visit shops who already state they dont keep british gas cards and when provided they are “invalid”. I have a child with a disability and damp. I have a chest infection now and people are telling me i am selfish and cant win. What can i do? NeoScota
Gunna chime in here because I just got an email from my supplier. Seems they are trotting out porky pies to customers in order to get these fucking things into peoples houses. The guff they said to me was that the radio signal that operates the off peak times will but shut off by next June so they will have to replace the meter with a smart one. Aren't I just so lucky? I said I didn't want one due to research proving these things are bad for health, and I mentioned how old bag, sorry lady next door tried to have one fitted but for whatever reason it couldn't be installed. So hoping that will be the case with mine, but this is probably related to that "Switch" they will flick to make us all go like the movie Cell. But if it does go in, then theres this orgonite guy who's gear is really good. I used to make the stiff but he is reasonably priced for what ue packs into them. I have lots of his pieces on a house grid kit and two big "take no shit" pyramids and a good few tensor rings. He also does kits for smart meters. I might see what he has now. https://www.photonorgone.co.uk/

You want a Toroidal Transformer, connect it across the incoming lines and the Eddy currents it generates will rotate your meter wheel in opposite direction - your meter will turn backwards. That's how they used to do it. Either that or put a highly inductive load into your house - that messes with those old meters in your favour. Campion
Thanks Pi, but I'm not looking for anything like that to fiddle it. I just don't want smart devices in my home or trust them to be in our interest. They sent 3 of these semi-threatening emails quoting the law and I haven't heard from them since. If I do end up having to get one I'll be looking to turn it onto dumb mode if that's possible.

I kept deleting their{ EDF } emails every time without replying to their invitations to arrange a time for my 'new meters' to be installed now they have me reading my own meters every two or three weeks and sending the readings to them, probably in an effort to piss me off and get me to have a new meter! They don't know me that well, obviously, I know I'll have to have new ones forced upon us eventually, but, I'll keep up my rearguard action for as long as I can! Opening my front door and reading the two meters next to it is no biggy, so, it could be a while before they win, because I'm a really stubborn old goat who'll take it right to the wire! If anything were to happen to me first, my wife would cave in right away because she doesn't like to 'upset people' and she can't see the problem I have with it!? 'Defiance, not compliance' all the way for me, I've always been that way inclined and I'm not going to change anytime soon!
