UK Genetic Technology (Precision Breeding) ACT 2023

This just hit the frontpage on GLP.

It appears to be an act which regulates commercial use of genetically modified plants and animals:

Genetically modified organisms are a different definition, this act sets out how to develop and market ‘precision bred’ animals and plants, although it’s basically the same thing.

They’re also going to develop and market animal and human food using ‘precision bred’ organisms.

According to this there will be a publicly available register of every organism they create, and another register for all the food they create and market from their insane experiments.

This part made me think a little, as the Secretary of State can amend, swap around and create new regulations as new organisms get created. Maybe it’s a back door into human gene spliced food? :

“In this section—
“embryo” includes an egg that is in the process of fertilisation or is undergoing any other process capable of resulting in an embryo;
“human” includes a human embryo and all subsequent developmental stages of a human;
“human admixed embryo” has the same meaning as it has in the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990 by virtue of section 4A(6) and (11) of that Act.”

“Meaning of “plant” and “animal”
In this Act “plant” means an organism in the taxonomic group— (a) Archaeplastida, or
(b) Phaeophyceae.
In this Act “animal” means an organism in the taxonomic group Metazoa, other than a human (or a human admixed embryo).”

This is just the start.

Defo.
From the Guardian:

Gene editing was previously subject to the strict rules and regulations that control genetically modified organisms (GMOs), but under this new law gene-edited animals and food will not be classed in England as GMOs and will not need to be labelled as such.”

Thought the king was against all this stuff?

Disbelief as “Green King” Gives Royal Assent to New Gene Breeding Technology

By Julian Rose

In one of the more shocking hypocrisies of this year so far, Charles 111, King of England – considered to be a strong supporter of organic farming and environmental causes – has given his Royal Assent to a biotechnology ‘innovation’ which will provide an open book for UK firms to alter the genome of animals and plants, so as to create novel engineered species and biotech ‘foods’.
