Hindenburg - The Fiery Death Of The Airship And The Rise Of The Airliner

It occurred to me while watching this:

1.) How did the Hindenburg make it all the way across the Atlantic intact, then suddenly go up in flames while landing in New York?

2) Why, like Titanic, did it also croak en route to NEW YORK specifically?

3) Did someone POWERFUL feel threatened by the FUTURE POTENTIAL of airships to change the world or commerce, war or travel?

4) Could Hindenburg have been shot at from afar or sabotaged from within?

5) How did we get stuck with airliners for decades which cannot land safely without a long landing strip at all?

6) Why is there no long-distance choice other than jet airliners today? Like an airship with jet-engines?

7) Why did nobody develop a much safer - non-flamable - airship in the decades that followed?

8) Disasters were common then and Titanic didn't stop better ships from being created. How did Hindenburg END the airship?

Apparently the aviation industry put out for new designs, a designer came up with the idea of building a spaceframe inside the fuselage and bolting the seats directly to that - would have made the structure and seating much safer.

Well the story goes the winning designer went to meet the president - Nixon I think, and when he went in he quipped 'very nice to meet you but I voted for the other guy' Nixon took offence and after the meeting awarded the design to the Inferior one with seats only bolted to the floor that we have now.

Usual crap, corrupt decisions with little or no oversight.

I belleive it was sabotage.

Yeah, I'd like to see any leads for that.

It does seem like an accident but it killed Airship technology dead which is a huge loss imo.

If only they had used a safer gas, they would probably still be in our skies. But it seems our advancement is funnelled into accepted industries and other industries based on different technologies get sidelined and disappear.

Vegetable oil for diesel engines as they were originally invented to run on, wind turbines instead of wave or tidal generators. Hemp for clothes, paper and fuel. All died out with help of the ruling government of the time.

Strongly believe it was a Titanic type event, i.e. planned. Not a disaster or accident at all. Titanic was overt as to why it occurred, they opposed the Fed, Hindenburg not so clear. I guess look in to who died? Any one of significance?

Interesting questions.

It looks like there actually were allegations of sabotage.

In that Pathe footage, the airship's flying with Nazi insignia on the tail. Even in 1937, that would have made it a target. Did Hitler react at all to the disaster?

I believe he made no official statement whatsoever, it wasn't an accident outside of that, no idea.

Many years ago there was a documentary looking into what happened.

It went into the full details of exactly what materials were used used.

From memory: the dope used to seal the bags that held the hydrogen could build a really big static charge.

Somehow the static charge created a spark and poof! Up it goes!

Using hydrogen was asking for trouble.

The Zeppelin Museum at Friedrichshaven on Lake Constance is an excellent place to visit.

Zeppelins fly low so get affected by the weather.

They fly slow.

For luxury long distance air travel? Might work.

Cheap and fast? No...

I'm sure Elon could stick a Tesla to a Zeppelin and make it go real fast.

Then he would shoot it into space.

Then it would impact the moon and the moon would ring like a bell, just like back in the day.

🤣
