Nuckles
I absolutely hate it and have done ever since I can remember. People spending money they don't have on buying sh*t they don't need, bowing to the commercialisation pushed by the media; kids getting spoiled and not valuing what they have; people stressing over cooking what is simply a glorified roast dinner; crap music on the radio. Pees me off every year and I cant wait until the crap is over! 5
EnigmaticWorld
Not a big fan of Christmas, but I don't hate it either. People are more anti-social these days, and Christmas and the Yule period is a tradition that gets them out at least. I understand that not all family gatherings are pleasant for people though. What you're describing is not really true Christmas either, it sounds like what you hate is more about the commercial aspect of the Christmas that we have today. How would you feel about Christmas if it was just about folk and tradition, instead of just spending money and getting stressed? It often depends what peoples political views are too, more on the right seem to appreciate the holiday season. Many on the Left don't like Christmas though, which is fine, but cringe if they have been programmed to only hate Christmas like a radical progressive. Stuart dorrans
I love Christmas day but I can get really depressed the few weeks before it. I think it's been drummed into us from a young age that this is supposed to be the happiest time of year, but half of the world is really starving and living in poverty. I can't celebrate that. I've kept the TV off this month because I can't stand all the social engineering that we are supposed to be sitting round a big table with our multicultural families

Im not a Christian so why would I celebrate Christmas? So many who 'celebrate' Christmas aren't even Christian either! Christians just stole the whole thing from older religions anyway; its not even authentically theirs! Like all religion, just another sop for the sheep. As for tradition, most of what is considered traditional only dates back to Victorian times and the practices of rich Victorians at that. The whole thing is a complete farce. I watch very little TV, haven't bothered much with it for years now as there is very little on worth watching. Creativity and originality seem to be things of the past and all they seem to be able to do is rehash the old stuff (much like the way the music industry has gone) and ruin it in the process. We only have one in the house as my husband watches some things. I would happily throw the TV out and wouldnt miss it at all.

LastOneLeftInTheCounty
Yeah, I’ve been progressively trained to fear Christmas over the years. Just do what I’m doing this year and pretend to be ill so I won’t have to put up with any bullshit. Im longing for a return of the ancient Nordic tradition of consuming fly agaric magic mushrooms on Christmas Day. It’s fun for the whole family. After hanging the mushrooms to dry on the Christmas tree (the origin of baubles) the entire family would chow down and trip out. If you were a bad child that year you were given a piece of coal and excluded from the ritual as you’d bring everyone down and cause bad trips. Might make some family Christmases actually bearable if it returned to Northern European culture 1

Campion
Midwinter festivals and feasting goes back to the stone age. There's archaeological evidence of this at Stonehenge, where the winter solstice was as important as the summer. This midwinter festival may have changes names and put back a few days with Christianity - the rebirth of the sun/son becoming apparent a short time after the lowest point (ritual death). And we appreciate lights and decorations at the darkest and bleakest time of year. Especially with family and friends around too. So yes I do like Christmas, and I'm not a Christian (apart from some cultural Christian traits). But if Christmas isn't for you, would you replace it with some other festivities to mark the turning points of the year, or be some kind of minimalist puritan who has none at all?
Mr H
I think some of the commercialism in the west is a bit overdone. But I think it's nice to have some days in the year where family and friends get together and the rat race temporarily ends. Or if you're a Christian then it has more meaning. I don't really have much family anymore, and sometimes I reflect on their deaths at this time, but generally I quite enjoy it. Macnamara
The rampant consumerism is pretty distastful but there's still lots about this time of year that i like. Some of it is to do with christmas and some isn't One way to take a break from christmas is to simply not spend a single penny on christmas and instead book a cheap flight somewhere else and have a holiday instead. Most places won't be particularly sunny but prices can be lower and crowds smaller at that time of year.
zArk
Love Christmas i disagree with christmas stuff appearing before December (trying to water down another tradition) i even enjoy dissecting Christmas, the ritual, looking at it from all angles and still i come back thinking what a fantastic tradition that has evolved over many many years. from looking at the christos the story of the 3 kings Saint Nicholaus and presents scrooge story and the debt cancellation myth the tree, holly ivy the feasting the family the lights at the solstice Twelvetide all of these can be researched to discover interesting histories but in my opinion all rooted within human development, spiritual guidance and a knowledge of the Stars So, i love it and encourage my children to look at certain age-suitable things i.e commercialism of christmas or the lights and the solstice Edited December 26, 2022 by zArk
zArk
and the songs..... Better cinematography Imo.
