Grumpy Owl
It does have its uses, following on from what I posted in the 'New Tech Thread': I'm fairly 'tech-savvy' but I can't code for shit, not anymore like I used to, back in the days of using BASIC on my Commodore Plus/4 as a child, or using STOS The Game Creator on my Atari ST as a teenager! This ChatGPT does have its limitations, it wouldn't code an entire PHP script to create a full ecommerce website from scratch for example, but I like how it is able to come up with code to perform certain tasks and routines. It did provide me with a PHP script for updating stock from a CSV file running on our webserver, which was great and did work, but was limited by our VPS itself. I then asked it for an equivalent Visual Basic (VB) script, that I could run on our own local server - a nifty little Windows PC we have at work - and it duly came up with a VB version. I could maybe have achieved this myself with a lot of Googling and 'trial-and-error', but I couldn't have coded anything like this myself. Is it cheating? Maybe yes. Has it saved us money instead of hiring freelancers to do the coding/scripting for us? Of course it has.

Following on from this i feel compelled to issue a warning, from what i wrote above, and not everything i pick up on comes to me clearly and in a definable manner, i now feel i have recognised it's true purpose and that is to wipe the net of nonsense clean of all data (cyber polygon event) currently stored on the servers that make up the current net, to make way for 'Starlink', so if you have data that is currently in the net so to speak, get yourself a couple of big spinny disks and make a back up of it offline and in your own hands, then make another backup of that backup and have it in a different location but still in your possession, how you go about defining possession is up to you, but you get the picture, If it don't happen then no worries, but if it does and there is a lot of hard production work that you have put into it, even if just accounting stuff, music, art...etc you may well be left feeling a bit suicidal, i know what it feels like to lose a fuckton of info and it's not nice,

Luckily, since I am not a coder, all I ever have to these days is write VBA for Word and Excel (and occasionally Access). If you can't at least read it yourself how would you know if a chat AI had given you something useful or malicious?

Yes but what i liked about it was that the "essay" was pretty close to the thoughts I had when thinking how to solve the problem. We were taught to write in pseudocode first, before putting into COBOL (or PASCAL or whatever, that was another one) so the code was more readable. Another thing I learned was JSP, Jackson Structured Programming to impose a regular structure on the algorithm before we started coding, like a more structured form of flowchart, which again made it easier for someone else to see what we're doing. 49 minutes ago, k_j_evans said: If you can't at least read it yourself how would you know if a chat AI had given you something useful or malicious? Good point. What also worries me is how do I write something that's safe from hackers hijacking it to get into my system? True I suppose. I may not be able to write code like this myself, but I can at least read through what it has written and I understand what it is doing. I meant the b* divisions. I still use JSP (more or less) - good old stars, crows feet and toasting forks - for writing VBA.
