King Charles III Coins Revealed Today...

So, the first King Charles III coins were revealed today, and from what I can see from a brief scan of the news at lunchtime is that it’s business as usual, another monarch, another coin, ready to start being minted imminently, ready for circulation in the next few months.

No-one, absolutely no one, seems to have connected the fact that the presentation of these coins has occurred less than 2 weeks after Queen Elizabeth’s funeral. This is significant in that for these coins to be revealed now, an assessment of the actual process to get to this stage suggests it isn't possible in such a short timeframe...

Portraits to be taken, profiles to be agreed on, sample profiles produced, final profiles to be agreed, metal stamps to be made, test pressings to be reviewed etc, etc Final images to be agreed and press releases prepared... All in 9 days?

What I’m getting at is this... for these coins to have been produced for now the process would need to have been started months ago... therefore this has to be more evidence that the Queen has been dead for some time and didn’t die on 8th September as we were told....

I like your thinking, but they've probably had the designs planned and waiting in the wings for long enough. They do this in the media. The newspapers already have an archive of people's obituaries - before they die. There's a name for it, but I can't remember what it is...

I would imagine that the royal mint have probably had a prototype coin waiting in the wings since the Queen's health troubles, in recent years.

Either way none of it will be around for long anyway if the PTB have fuck all to do with it.

BTW, all this Rex for the King and Regina for a Queen Latin nonsense is going to cause a spate of vandalism sometime in the future.

By the time we get to Queen Elizabeth VI or Queen Victoria VI, people will start scrubbing out the e in Regina, and insert an 's after their name.

We'll be confront in perhaps 500 years time with post boxes saying:

Queen Elizabeth's VI Regina

I think a word for it might be Ineptness. They employ journalists who will work round the clock for a big scoop. Clearly though, they need this advance, ghoulish preparation because none of them can be trusted to sit down on the spur of the moment  & produce an appropriate piece of writing off the cuff.

The head on the coin is 3D sculpted, either by hand using sculpting software, or from a 3D scan of the real head.

Even a seasoned artist will take about 4 weeks to produce a sculpt of this high quality, with perfect proportions on everything.

This includes the 3D sculpt being reviewed, 3D printed and 3D rendered, revised, 3D printed again, reviewed again, revised one more time and so on.

There will be a lot of back and forth about how the nose looks, whether the ear is shaped right, how the hair should be sculpted and so on.

They would have used a 3D printer capable of printing using metal to see how the coin looks, and likely printed the review samples much larger than the final coin. Maybe about the size of a dinner plate.

You are right - this process would take weeks, unless you want a crappy looking portrait.
