Don't you think that's more of a societal problem? A pub in a rough urban environment is bound to have more rascals than a family friendly pub in a rural area or the suburbs for example, surely? It probably depends on the day too. Friday and Saturdays are surely more rowdy than other days.

Don't use them myself, never have (which may surprise people), but I appreciate their place in society and can see what is trying to be done.

The Star in Belgravia. A nice mews pub selling Fullers ales. The Great Train Robbers met upstairs. When I moved down to London in the 70s, it was a nice out-of-the way local.

 

 

The Ennismore Arms in South Kensington. Now gone. If you wanted to see the odd film star, it was a good pub to visit. Charles Gray of James Bond fame, often used to hold court in the small bar.

 

 

The Ten Bells in Whitechapel. Two of Jack the Ripper's victims were last seen in here before meeting their grisly deaths. Now a tourist attraction but in the 70s, a place of curiosity and a cheap pint.

Living in Australia these days I don't go to the pub that often. But when I am back in the UK I take advantage simply because there are so many great pubs still around with some cracking real ales. Now I admit a lot are in non-City areas so maybe that is why I love them when I am back in the UK. They certainly have their place.

 

And on the Wetherspoons thing mentioned earlier; I know they are not everyone's cup of tea, but they are very welcoming environments where you can drink a coffee, get a cheap meal, use your computer and not even have a beer. So as much as I also hate large chains, they have a great place for oldies to go and socialise, they don't pressure you to drink alcohol, and if nothing else, they are preserving some of these pubs by taking them over so they don't get turned in to apartments or a restaurant.

A lot of retailers were struggling with business rates before the lockdown. In Preston & Chorley there were plenty of empty premesis and more barbers & charity shops than anything else. The events of the last couple of years were the last straw.

The 'decline of the high street' has been going on for years. I lived in Acocks Green in Birmingham for eight years from 2008, when I first moved there, there was a great selection of local shops, but as time went by, as shops closed down, they seemed to be replaced by charity shops or takeaways.

 

The 'rise of the barbershop' phenomenon is fairly recent, certainly in the last few years, and it is noticable just how many Turkish barbers there are now on high streets everywhere up and down the country. And people are starting to notice and question this.

I lived in Acocks green in 2003/05 it was a nice place, I shared a house with some irish guys who made made me feel welcome,once i explained i was a celt. They took me to a large irish pub down the warrick road,I think.

You wouldn't recognise the place now. The only Irish pub I knew about there was Casey Joes, that was the other end of Warwick Road going into Olton, but I don't think that opened until 2009/2010. Pubs-wise, the only one left in the main 'village' area is the Spread Eagle (Wetherspoons). The Red Lion got knocked down when Morrisons took over the Sainsburys store and wanted to extend the car park. And the famous Inn On The Green closed its doors for good last year.
