HAARPING_On
The pub closures following the 2008 crash will be nothing compared to what's coming this winter... it's going to be absolute carnage. This will also extend to other small retail businesses too, the local butcher here has already started shutting on Monday as he doesn't generate enough business to open.
Mikhail Liebestein
Yes, local prices are a shocker for food and drink. A lot is to do with the footfall in combination with power prices hike, a local pub might have survived on some local and some passing trade. Whereas venues in city centres might get more customer overwhich they can spread the overheads/fixed costs. To set the tone, 2 recent business lunches, one for 3 people total £107 for fish+chips a beer and small dessert at a local pub. The other was in London, for £7 people with mains drinks and desserts £120. Locals are being killed!! I haven't been to the flicks in 20 yrs or so, but one of those big out of town ones I pass by seems to still be quite busy. Unless they're all there for the Costa. No doubt it'll close as well, since this isn't about anything else than destroying society and changing people's habits so they stay indoors. I read a couple of local news stories recently, about some independent fish-and-chip shops being forced to go out of business due to "rising energy costs". I do notice that this all doesn't seem to be affecting many of these 'cheaper' independent chicken takeaways and kebab shops you see everywhere (and still more opening up). Also of interest is that this doesn't seem to be affecting the likes of McDonalds, Burger King, KFC, Subway, Costa, Greggs, Starbucks et al. 3 hours ago, Anti Facts Sir said: I haven't been to the flicks in 20 yrs or so, but one of those big out of town ones I pass by seems to still be quite busy. Amazing isn't it how all that will be left standing are the 'big corporate' brands, and that is the ultimate intention. Of course, when it comes to pubs, how are Wetherspoons doing? No doubt theirs will be the only pubs left as well. 5

If you don't use it, you'll lose it as the expression goes, but I know their main concerns are energy prices. "British beer is over-taxed. We pay some of the highest rates of duty on beer in Europe – second only to Finland. Lower tax on beer will help keep a trip to the pub an affordable pleasure" https://beerandpub.com/campaigns/beer-duty/ Some villages only have a shop and a pub, which is the heart of the community. 3
Golden Retriever
Ireland suffered severe Covid restrictions. This pub wake was unimaginable for most of 2020-2022. Some people are still literally traumatised from the fear mongering and I doubt if this scene is common now. Enjoy! Along with the aspect where landlords and staff will face major difficulties financially, and many may become homeless, there is the psychological effect on customers who (some) rely on their local as a source of social contact and friendship. Utterly disgraceful..but not surprising.
Fluke
Been happening for a long time but I don't think the pub is going anywhere to be honest. The landlords don't always help themselves and the brewery's make it difficult for the landlords. Where I live years ago there would have been pubs in back roads, a of them now are houses. So it's been happening for a long time and of course things of changed. Change which is largely planned imho. Edit Anyone remember the death of the pub thread on the original forum around 2009/10/11ish? Edited September 1, 2022 by Fluke
Nemuri Kyoshiro
They hate pubs. People gather there and exchange ideas. People in pubs can't be controlled and their speech curtailed. Hence the £14 pint. Soon they will be a footnote in history and maybe they'll show one in the British Museum to remind people of what used to be the social hub of communities around Britain. Being an expat, the pub is one of the things I miss most.

Sir Alan Sugar turned Ye Old Kings Head Pub in Chigwell into an expensive Turkish Restaurant unaffordable to most locals, where all the fake, suntanned reality TV celebs hang out. YUK "Ye Olde Kings Head in Chigwell High Road, which claims to have served beer to Charles Dickens, highwayman Dick Turpin and Winston Churchill, was bought by entrepreneur Alan Sugar in April and will be leased to the owners of the Turkish restaurant Sheesh in Buckhurst Hill once it has been refurbished" 2

Golden Retriever
How many pubs have been lost in YOUR area? Ethel
You must be psychic, I was thinking about this just today. It says a lot about humanity at this point in time that people would grieve the loss of places where people pay money to drink poison. Also, I find it genuinely traumatic to be around drunk people nowadays. There seems to be a trait in many drinkers that they wish to drag everyone else down to their level, or else insult and shout at those of us who wish to remain tee-total. Yeah, what a miserable stick in the mud!

Yeah, what a miserable stick in the mud! I come from a Christian family. I never grew up around drink, but I still like some pub environments. Who says you have to drink alcohol at a pub though? I do these days, but I'm not one to get bladdered. I find people that get bladdered a bit obnoxious anyway. They lose their self-awareness and don't understand how annoying they are to people that aren't drunk. 2
