Sir Salman Rushdie: Satanic Verses author stabbed in the neck at event in New York

The Indian-born British author, 75, has been taken to hospital by helicopter but his condition is not yet known.

Author Sir Salman Rushdie, who has faced death threats for his novel The Satanic Verses, has been stabbed in the neck while on stage at an event in New York state.

The Indian-born British author has been taken to hospital by helicopter but his condition is not yet known. His agent said he is undergoing surgery.

The 75-year-old was about to give a lecture when a man stormed the stage at the Chautauqua Institution and began attacking Sir Salman as he was being introduced, according to witnesses.

The novelist, who became an American citizen in 2016, fell to the floor when the suspect attacked him. He was restrained and is now in custody.

"It was very quick... we thought he was fixing his microphone and then we saw the knife. He starting stabbing him in the neck first… and Mr Rushdie got up and started running. After that, people in the audience got up on stage and pinned the attacker down. It's hard to believe. We're still in shock."

New York governor Kathy Hochul said a state police officer saved the author's life and that of the moderator, who she said was also hurt.

Ms Hochul added: "He is alive, he has been airlifted to safety. But here is an individual who has spent decades speaking truth to power, someone who's been out there unafraid, despite the threats that have followed him his entire adult life."

I told him that evening about my only personal experience of anti-Semitism. One summer when I was young, before I had published anything, and when I was not even slightly fashionable, I was somehow invited to a fashionable rooftop party in London, at which I was introduced to a designer of extremely fashionable hats named Tom Gilbey, whose work, I was told, was often featured in Vogue. He was quite uninterested in meeting me, was curt to the point of discourtesy, and quickly went off in search of more fashionable party guests. A few minutes later, however, he came back towards me at some speed, his whole body contorted into a shape designed to convey embarrassment and regret, and offered the following apology. “I’m so sorry,” he said, “you probably thought I was very rude to you just now, and actually, I probably was very rude, but you see, it’s because they told me you were Jewish.” The explanation was offered in tones which suggested that I would immediately understand and forgive. I have never wanted so much to be able to say that I was in fact Jewish. https://forward.com/culture/411296/salman-rushdie-how-philip-roth-became-a-political-prophet/

Just one question. If he is "Indian-born" , how does that make him a "British author" ?

If the fatwa was 33 yrs ago, he would have been 42 at the time.

Oh these numbers.....

Christ's age when he was crucified.

These dumbasses think that when they kill with the 33, Christ gets crucified all over again, and it rains in Heaven.

That's about as logical as making your kitchen toaster face North in the belief that bread will toast better that way.

But that is what the Freemasons believe.

It must be terrible to have an IQ lower than your food blender.

Wanna know why Masonic lodges have checkerboard floors?

It helps these dimwits cross to the other side of the room without accidentally walking in the wrong direction. 🤣🤣🤣

That was a long time coming. Has anyone on here ever read The Satanic Verses?

When I think back, there was something so iffy that I bought the book out of curiosity, but never read it. Typical. It was huge news at the time wasn't it.

Today I thought oh no, someone's off furlough.

And that there will be so many parts to the coming wars. If one doesn't work ....

He was not of Indian identity but immigrant of European. But he's stated that he's jewish.

That’s it, exactly.” So for that moment we were just a couple of Jews having dinner together in London. It’s a proud memory.]

Weird, always assumed he was muslim. His Wikipedia says his family was Kashmiri muslims, maybe he converted or something.

To me ... this was a part of turning people against each other, and of the ... if you speak someone might kill you... era. I'm quite amazed to realise it was the 80's. Feels later. He was put under police protection back then, and it threw up a massive debate. I'm sorry to hear what's happened to him, and this must be part of a much bigger picture, and could be used for any agenda now.

He was about to give a lecture and now he cannot speak.

If you write an inflammatory book about a religion, ethnicity, culture or group of people you have to realise you are making yourself a target, especially when you can't take criticism of your own religion, ethnicity, culture or group of people. It's pretty simple to understand that there are always fanatics amongst the offended.

If they are telling us the truth that is.
